At 10 PM and afterwards, if you're the last person with RFID access leaving the space, please follow these lock up procedures.

Lock Up Checklist
* Both latches (on the right side and bottom right corner) on the window leading to the fire escape are locked.
People
Please ask everyone to finish up hacking and leave the space with you. If someone doesn't want to leave, please inform them after 10 PM that non-24-hour users are not allowed to remain in the space after the last 24-hour access token holder leaves, and that they need to leave with you. If this is a problem for them and they don't want to leave, there is an emergency contact list on the top door so that we can raise an alarm and potentially get some more Members over to you to help close the space. Alternatively, call the local police. We've been operating this people-need-to-leave-after-10pm model since the September 2014 Noisebridge Reboot and this shouldn't be news to anyone at this point.
Why are we doing this?
There are many reasons:
* It's great for people who are interested in what's going on at Noisebridge -- no need to sit through long lectures.
* Some people are working on projects that are not ready for a full 30 minute or hour long talk, but they want to get their ideas out. Maybe they need help, maybe they want to propose an idea to the Noisebridge community.
* Some people are shy to public speaking and want to practice without giving an "official" conference talk, which can be daunting. This is a great way to try it out, in a community of peers.
* San Francisco is the mecca for startups. If you're trying to sell your idea to someone, you need to be able to explain it in five minutes or less.
Noisebridge Web of Trust
Some of us were thinking it would be useful to have an informal noisebridge web of trust.

Here's how the GPG web of trust works:

* You want to send a message to Alice.
* You download the alice@example.com keys from a public keyserver. This key may not belong to the real Alice!
* If three or more people you trust, either directly or transitively, have signed the alice@example.com key, your GPG client will tell you that.
* Finally, you can send an email to Alice, with some assurance that you have the right key.

Noisebridge can help the following ways:
* Finding Alice's email address, if you don't already have it.
* Providing a convenient venue for you to meet three or more people who may know people who know Alice.

For now, we'd like to get more people to sign each others' keys at Noisebridge. In the future, it may be useful to build tools to visualize islands and the noisebridge "strong set", the largest set of noisebridge people who mutually trust each other. Once that set of people is clear, you can join it by finding three or more people who belong to it who are willing to sign your key, and we can strategically bridge islands to join the largest group of people together.

Clear instructions
TODO

Caveats
* Don't trust signatures you find on the noisebridge wiki.
* Don't trust 32-bit or 64-bit short ids. They can be easily faked. See https://evil32.com/

chat log
so what's the action coming out, are we going to have an nb-wot?

was just about to say the same thing

yes

Does anyone know if there's any facilities in GPG for enabling this or should we just keep a public list?

the normal keyservers will do

i think x is taking charge on his idea of these classes to use and supplement the EFF docs he linked: https://ssd.eff.org/
ssd.eff.org
Surveillance Self-Defense
Tips, Tools and How-tos for Safer Online Communications

we just need a critical mass of people with 3 marginally-trusted signatures

The tricky thing is that we want to communicate other information once we've bootstrapped GPG-trust

if anyone's in the space right now, I'm sitting on the couch by the window. let's sign.

Like signal info, etc.

how long are you going to be there?

I'll be there in a few hours

a few hours probably

I mean, I might get off the couch

I don’t plan to get into PGP at the workshop. I’m going to share the Willie Brown catchphrase “the e- in e-mail stands for evidence” and encourage people basically not to write too much sensitive stuff in email, and if they do, to delete the email afterwards rather than storing it in an encrypted form.

I should get off my couch too

It would have been much better for the DNC to regularly delete all their emails rather than try to learn PGP.

I think tor, tails, etc can be useful without any special knowledge though

Deleting emails works! It’s a trusted strategy used by mayors and governors nationwide.

mayors and governors who are at no serious risk of being under wiretap

without a prior corruption investigation

Oh yeah: Tor, Signal, installing updates, 2FA, Tails in some cases, maybe Onionshare, that kind of stuff.

this is getting wiki sized
Error Messages We Have Seen
MNT TNK NOT INST - The maintenance tank had a bent pin when it arrived. I was able to gently unbend the pin. Let me know if this happens again, it requires a good amount of care and precision to fix.

MNT TK NEAR FULL - The maintenance tank is reusable. Gently pop the plastic grating off using a tiny flathead screwdriver in one of the six tiny holes on the side. Replace the paper towels inside. This needs to be done semi regularly so it does not overfill.

MNT TNK FULL - CHIP RESET - if the maintenance tank fills up, it is actually just an electronic chip claiming it is full. This chip needs reset using a "chip resetter", trent has one. The maintenance tank paper towels need replaced occasionally.

Nozzle Cleaning
The nozzles need cleaned manually as the auto clean doesn't work and uses tons of ink.

An excellent youtube video guide exists.

It is necessary to press the allen screw in this video, allowing the print head to slide along its axis. Then use a blue shop towel with windex original to release any dried ink from the nozzle. The windex cannot be the foaming type.

Hacking the Chip
People hacked the chip and there was a lot to it. You can learn more here.

It may be possible to read any brand new chip that has never touched a machine and write it to the old one, but there's some weird stuff in eddiem's chip hacking article.
Cowlickshttps://www.noisebridge.net/index.php?title=User:Cowlicks&diff=54076User:Cowlicks2016-09-18T01:42:51Z
Cowlicks: /* SSH Pub Key */

::This will be the 5th Noisebridge Hacker Trip To China.

::In previous years' Hacker Trip To China, we've visited cities that currently have a hackerspace, and visited my manufacturer, Seeed Studio, and other manufacturers. We also visited Tsinghua University, considered the most prestigious university in China, and other schools -- all of which are now starting hackerspaces. We also went to the International Exhibition of Inventions Kunshan (IEIK 2014), near Shanghai. And everywhere we went, we were shown around by local geeks, to see what they thought was interesting where they live. Also, wherever we went, those of us interested gave talks, presentations, workshops, and demos.

This year's Hacker Trip To China
When: 2-October-2015 (Hong Kong) through 21-October-2015 (Shanghai).

Flight, transportation, and hotel Info: We were each be on our own to book our own air fare to meet in Hong Kong on 2-October, and fly home from Shanghai on 21-October (or from wherever you decided to fly home from).

I'll organized the itinerary and the hotels and other transport. I'll pay in advance for all of this, and you can pay me back.

Where: In each of the cities we will go to, we'll visit their local hackerspace(s), and will be shown around by local geeks to see what interested them where they live. We'll also have plenty of time to do "normal" (and spectacular) tourist things too!

Here's some possible places we might visit:

* We'll start our trip by meeting in Hong Kong on 2-October-2015. We will visit Dim Sum Labs hackerspace. We'll also see lots of other cool stuff in Hong Kong.

* We'll next go over the border into Mainland China to Shenzhen / Guangzhou for a few days to visit Chaihuo Makerspace and SZDIY hackerspaces, visit Seeed Studio - the open source hardware company - to meet the cool folks there and to see their manufacturing facilities, and to visit with Dangerous Prototypes - another open source hardware company. We'll also visit some other manufacturers, to see where all the things we use in our daily lives come from. Of course, we'll also visit the famous (and totally awesome!) Huaqiangbei electronics market in Shenzhen.

* From there we'll go to Shanghai where we'll visit my manufacturer (Etonnet) that I have used for TV-B-Gone remote controls and NeuroDreamer sleep masks, where will all, hopefully, get to see how products are made, from start to finish, learning how manufacturing works. We will also visit XinCheJian hackerspace in Shanghai. We can also visit the Shanghai electronics mall.

* We'll also go to Beijing. We'll visit the Beijing Makerspace hackerspace. We'll also visit Tsinghua University, where they'll just be finishing construction of the world's largest hackerspace.

* We'll make our way back to Shanghai, where, for most of us, our trip will end.
Many people on our trip will fly home from Shanghai on 21-October-2015.

I will be staying in China until 2-November-2015, when I fly home from Shanghai. Before then I will be traveling around China. Everyone is welcome to join me for any or all of these further adventures. (And, of course, are free to leave whenever you like.)

Cost: For the third Noisebridge China trip, I paid about $2k total, including air fare from SF and food and everything -- including all the electronics stuff that I bought.

Part of this year's trip may be paid for by Tsinghua University.
You will Need a Chinese Visa!!
To go to China, you needed to get a visa!

* And to get a visa, you need to have a passport that is valid at least 12 months after you planned to fly away from China (so, e.g., if you are leaving China on 21-October-2015, then your passport needs to be valid through 20-October-2016). Your passport must also have at least one entirely blank page.

* You also need:
** a printout of a filled-out Visa Application Form V. 2013 of the People's Republic of China (after we have everything we need I'll email you my filled out form as an example to follow).
** a copy of the information pages of your passport.
** a copy of your most Chinese visa (if you have been to China before).
** one 2"x2" recent color photo (not a printout).
** a screenshot or printout of hotel reservation confirmation (I'll email this to you when I have this).
** a printout of your invite letter (I'll email this to you when I have them for us).
** a copy of your airline tickets (both to and from China).

* For US citizens, the visa cost $140 (much cheaper for other nationalities). Starting this year, you can get a multiple-entry, good for 10 years. We should all apply for a Tourist L visa.

You can pay the fee by Visa, MasterCard, Money Order, Cashier's Check or Company Check. Cash or Personal checks are not acceptable.

To get a visa, you can go to your local Chinese consulate. No appointment is required. You go in one day, and it will be ready for pick up 4 business days later. My experience is that it takes about an hour the first day, and takes only a few minutes to pick up the visa a few days later. (2 to 3 business-day and 1 business day/same-day express service is available for $20 or $30.)

NOTE: The Chinese consulates are all closed for holidays on: 1-May, 25-May, 3-July, 31-July, 7-September, 1-October, 2-October, and other dates:

2015 Chinese Consulate Holiday Schedule

(Citizens of US and Europe do not need a separate visa for Hong Kong.)

Here is the application form for the China Tourist L Visa (same as the link given above):

http://www.china-embassy.org/eng/visas/fd/W020130830801798289342.pdf

I'll email you my filled out form as an example to follow -- but here is the basic idea (from my 2014 visa form):

On this form, most of the fields are obvious.
* For section 2.1, check "Tourism".
* The date of first entry in section 2.4 is the date we enter China, which is 2015-10-06.
* Longest intended stay -- section 2.5: 30 days.
* Itinerary in China -- section 2.6:
** Date: 2015-10-14
** Address:
*** Sitting on the City Walls Courtyard House
*** 57 Nianzi Hutong, Dongcheng, Beijing, China, 100009
* Who will pay -- section 2.7: myself
* Information of inviter in China -- section 2.8:

          Name: Jianzhong Cha

Address: School of Mechanical, Electronic and Control Engineering
Beijing Jiao Tong University, Beijing 100044

          Phone number: +86 137-0105-6989

          Relationship with applicant: host

* For sections 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5: check the "No" box for all these
* For sections 3.6, 3.7, 3.8: leave all these blank

Doing it Wrong: Getting a VISA as a UK Citizen in HongKong
* If the worst happens and you find the departure date is upon you and you still have no VISA, despair not: cash is king in China. For the princely sum of 2050 HKD (Hong Kong Dollars), you can buy an express double entry visa from the China Travel Services company inside Hong Kong airport. They have the same documentation requirements as the normal VISA office so bring your paperwork with you.

* You also need:

* Longest intended stay -- section 2.5: 30 days.
* Itinerary in China -- section 2.6:
