The first song played at 83c was by Welle:ErdBall from the album Die Wunderwelt der Technik and the song was "23... C=64.". The first song to play at 2169 was "Yippie" by Mouse on Mars.

Hardware
Horsy
Horsy is located on top of the library shelf, acting as our Media Center.

It's hooked up to a crazy amp and some crazy speakers sort of against the Mission Street wall near the columns. There's a "Line-In cable hooked up to horsy for mp3 players and what not.

Zebra
Zebra is located under one of the tall genius tables in front of the dark room.

We've got a nice stereo with 1/8" jack for audio devices, 5x RCA in, 1x SPDIF in, A/B speaker outs. Two Klipsch SB-5 speakers for now; a bit small for the space, but better than a PC laptop speaker.

We did a sound test and the amp can go to -11 (ha!) before you can even hear it outside when the windows are closed.

There is a sub. The sub will shut on/off automatically. To turn the sub up/down, on the receiver press the CH VOL button until SW is displayed on the screen, then press up/down to alter its state.

Jukebox
Summary
Pony holds all the music, Zebra and Horsy accesses the music and plays it on the speakers. The easiest way to control what music either machine plays is to connect to its web interface at http://pony.noise/juke.

Playing Music
Horsy has a mount to Pony's music directory (pony.noise:/d2/music). MPD scans this directory and builds up a library based off of its contents. Horsy can then play back anything form that library through the speakers. In order to tell MPD on Horsy what to play, you'll need to interface to it with a client, which is available for many operating systems. Luckily for you a web interface has already been setup on Pony, but if you want more control please look into the clients.

* Web: http://pony.noise/juke or http://172.30.0.30/juke
* MPD Client to Horsy: noisebridge-greet.noise or 172.30.0.44 port 6600
* MPD Client to Zebra: zebra.noise or 172.30.0.41 port 6600

For as yet unknown reasons certain machines get "permissions denied" when attempting to use the web interface. On my (steen) machine this happens, and I can still use the quite lovely commandline ncmpc client. with just "ncmpc --host horsy.local". In fact I'm doing it right now. You should be here. My music taste is impeccable.

The desktop web interface is relaXX and the mobile is NeoMPC.

If you'd like to play files directly from either machine, check the web interface page for shell access.

Getting Music into the Jukebox
Music content lives on Pony, not Horsy or Zebra. You'll need an account on Pony, using your favorite method of putting files on a different machine please place your music in pony.noise:/d2/music. Once there, refresh the MPD library through your favorite client or the web interface.

Streaming to MPD
Linux
Open source is pretty damned awesome because if aliens ever attack us we know from Independence day that they will be using OS9 mac servers and we will be safe from their superior OS 9 hacks.

Mac OSX
Check out an application called NiceCast. It's a very quick and simple way to stream the output of iTunes to a Shoutcast server. If you're wondering about the licensing, talk to Rubin110.

* Play something from iTunes and start NiceCast up, turn on the stream
* ssh into a machine that runs mpc (media player client)
* $ export MPD_HOST=noisebridge-greet.local
* $ mpc clear
* $ mpc add http://localipaddress:8000/listen
* $ mpc play

AirTunes
AirTunes is a way to stream audio over the network to speakers via an Apple Airport Express. Sadly the Airport Express hasn't been found since the move. Please read above on how to get MPD to stream a radio station from your local machine.

Using ESD
The easiest way to play music over the jukebox thing from a GNU system:

$ ESPEAKER=horsy.noise mplayer -ao esd $FILE
At acm.jhu.edu, the computer controlling the mag-stripe card reader that would unlock the door would also play a file in /home/username/.door on the speakers in the room. Ta-da - entrance music!
Places to look include craigslist and Bill pointed out starboardnet.com hcmcommercial.com, loopnet.com, and sfarmls.com. Also look in windows of buildings as you pass by and take down "for rent" numbers. When you see a place that looks interesting, add it to the list of "places to set up viewings" below. If you have a minute and can schedule some time out of your day, pick up a place from the list and call the landlord to set up a viewing.
Space Specs
Here's a list in no particular order of the things we are looking for from a space. This describes an ideal space, not every space will be like this.

* $2000-$5000/month
* 3000+ square feet
* 24-hour access (ideally our own secured entrance)
* No neighbor complaints for access, music work, or other noise
* Safe neighborhood (see murder map, for example)
* Shower/bathroom
* San Francisco
* Near public transportation
* reasonable power and ventilation

Rating Spaces
When writing up a report of a space you've viewed, please include a section with a quantification of the above desirable features, either as a "yes or no" or on a scale of 1 to 10, like so:

* Size: 8 (2000 square feet)
* Private Entance: No
* 24/7 Access: Yes
* Privacy / Sound Isolation: 6 (single neighboring space, used days, shares *thin* interior walls)
* Safety of Neighborhood: 8
* Shower: No
* Bathroom: Yes
* Kitchen: No
* In San Francisco: Yes
* Transit Availability: 6 (short bus ride from BART)
* Power: 10 (in a PG&E Substation!)
* Connectivity: 8
* Roof rights/line of sight to tall buildings: 7

We (Jake Appelbaum, Andy Isaacson, and David Molnar) went out to go look at
an office space advertised on craigslist on Thursday that might be available
for a permanent move-in soon. We actually ended up seeing two places. Here
are some notes on the places plus pictures. These give some idea of what
possible options are in addition to 40 Ringold. (Thanks again to Bill for
letting us use 40 Ringold for meetings, etc. during this time!)
"Owners were thinking $2/sf including build-out, don't know if they would be willing to go down to $1" but he didn't hang up on me. They'd like to rent whole floors but probably can subdivide.
Places to Set Up Viewings
This is a list of places where we may want to set up a viewing. Please add and update status as needed.
* Sutter St at near Union Sq.
Up to 10,000 RSF at extremely low price!
Asking $1.00 per foot per month
Two separate Full Floor suites of 5,000 RSF each
Sublease up to February 2015 (shorter term considered)
Stable Sublandlord
Mixture of private offices and open space
HVAC
USER:Eri sent an email to arrange a viewing time for next week. Will post viewing time for anyone to come along.

* 942 Mission - approx 40,000 sqft. Four levels, industrial elevator + standard elevator. Basement was a shop & well ventilated (or could be again if the air filters were removed), first floor dungeon/bar/party/etc area, second floor offices/desks/etc, roof access with hot tub & bar. Has cat6 prewired; fiber termination point from IPNetworks. Some gated parking spaces. A block from Powell Street BART. Former Kink.com HQ's known as the Porn Palace; where the first Arse Electronika was hosted. Has multiple bathrooms, shower, laundry hookups, kitchen, etc. etc. etc.; two private entries hooked into prox card system (security system still in place); plus gates & drop door fences if needed. Neighbourhood sketch, but being gentrified slowly it seems - blue bottle coffee moved in next store bringing quality caffeine supply and the yuppies who buy it. Across the street from the Mezzaine. Many parties events held here for years without noise complaints. Power was sufficient for hundreds of computers, film lighting rigs, professional audio, shop equipment, welders, etc. etc. etc. Amazing space - was sold to property company over a year and a half ago, no one is renting it even now - should find out property management company and inquire about rental prices. They're losing money on their investment as it stands.

* 1385 Mission 3,350 sqft of clean, very bright space on the corner of Mission and 10^th – one and a half blocks from BART. We are asking $12/sqft/year - $3,350/month Details:

* 10th and Harrison - http://www.foundersrealty.com/cgi-local/viewer.cgi?action=display_rentals_detail&id=565

* 174 Shotwell (at 16th). Asking $6500/mo for 4800sf, so a bit out of our price-range, but I suspect that's a starting point for negotiation.

* 3150 18th Street at Treat (Activspace) They seem to focus on smaller spaces, but will apparently knock down walls to make a larger space.

Getting Music into the Jukebox
Music content lives on Pony, not Zebra. You'll need an account on Pony, using your favorite method of putting files on a different machine please place your music in pony.noise:/d2/music. Once there, refresh the MPD library through your favorite client or the web interface.

AirTunes
AirTunes is a way to stream audio over the network to speakers. This is done with an Apple Airport Express. All internet routing/firewall functionality of the Airport Express have been turned off. The Airport is connected to the network via wifi to the noisebridge SSID.

The Airport is connected to the Jukebox machine via linein. There is no need to change inputs on the receiver/amp! Please keep in mind that audio from both the Jukebox and AirTunes can play at the same time.

To use AirTunes simply select "Nosebridge" from the speakers list at the bottom right of iTunes. If you use something other then iTunes, let's say WinAMP, there are a number of other applications out there to stream music to an AirTunes server. For Windows try JustePort and for Linux there's raop-play.

See from Linux if you want to see how to use I have set up AirTunes access from a Linux machine.
While the color and concept is nice, the circuit is kind of ungrammatical. The little bumps on the top and bottom are used to emphasize that two wires are crossing over one another and not connecting --- but there's no other wire there for them to pass over.

A simple way to fix this would be to add a vertical line through the middle of the logo all the way to the edge of the circle; that would render the circuit grammatically correct, although it still wouldn't be a circuit that did anything useful, except perhaps convert a little sound into heat.

A perhaps cleverer idea would be to incorporate a "bridge" circuit into the logo. A bridge is a square with a diagonal, with things connected to the corners of the square not on the diagonal, and it's the simplest circuit that can't be decomposed into series and parallel subcomponents. A bridge rectifier with a speaker on the diagonal would be both a nice illustration of the name, and also might have interesting nonlinear audio effects (as an output stage, not as a noise generator itself) if you actually built it.
A Few Ideas
Got to playing with InkScape a bit today, and made a few noisebridge-themed things to consider.

The circuit in the first is an audio signal going through a bridge rectifier to a speaker, which I haven't built (yet), but which would have the effect of kicking the fundamental frequency up an octave and distorting everything. The wheatstone circuit above would fit this layout too. This one had the interesting unintended side effect of being shaped like a cartoon rocket. The other two are just pseudo-oscilloscope buttons showing noise, keeping to the shape and color scheme of the current logo with a simpler theme. I uploaded these as pngs for easy web viewing, but if anyone wants the svgs to play around with let me know.
Fire safety
We currently have two smoke detectors (one upstairs and one downstairs). We have two fire extinguishers (downstairs rated 3-A:40-B:C, upstairs rated 10-B:C). It would be nice to have a kitchen-oriented extinguisher in the kitchen, and an extinguisher in any lab space that is appropriate to kinds of fires that might occur in that lab space and that won't damage the equipment kept in that lab. If we have any activity, materials, or apparatus in the space for which our fire extinguishers are not suitable, we should get new fire extinguishers that are compatible with them.

We have no sprinklers or other automated fire suppression (right?) and we have only one exit. We should consider whether to do anything to improve the marking of the exit and the fire extinguishers.

It would be helpful for safety to ensure that we always have at least one phone available that doesn't depend on power and Internet access to make calls (a land line or cell phone). Schoen 20:37, 1 October 2008 (PDT)

First aid
Safety for projects, materials, and equipment
* Training
* Rules or procedures
* Documentation (e.g. MSDS)
** Standard operating procedure at every lab I have ever worked at has been to have a binder containing MSDSs for all materials used in the lab. Some labs also had an electronic version in a CMS; we could add MSDSs to the wiki, as many MSDSs are available on the web. If someone wanted to spring for it, we could also get an account at http://www.msdsonline.com/ or someplace similar. Mlp 23:00, 1 October 2008 (PDT)
* Safety equipment or apparatus (e.g. protective clothing or eyewear, eyewash, ventilation, etc.)

Physical security
* A security grate is needed on the smaller window over the door.
* Bolts on the security grates over the larger windows look somewhat weak. Could use some assessment and possible repair.
* A stronger solid-core door / access control needed
** More discussion in AccessSystem

Safety in the chemistry lab
We're definitely going to need to build a fume hood. ANY reaction that evolves gas must be done with appropriate ventilation, even if it's a relatively harmless gas, and the vent over your average stove won't cut it. (I almost killed myself with carbon dioxide in my kitchen once, so I take this very seriously.) It would really be best if we built a fume hood with an air foil. I have a doc with instructions on how to build one, but it's scanned from a textbook so I really shouldn't upload it here. How much linear space is available near the existing exhaust vent? Mlp 23:02, 1 October 2008 (PDT)

I think it might be useful to set up a timeline for what sorts of experiments we want to be able to do, so that we can acquire lab equipment in sequence of importance, and that maximizes the usability of our equipment for multiple ongoing experiments. it might also be useful to institute some sort of logging application or notebook requirement, so that legal issues can be dealt with as well as allowing others to springboard off of any work that does wind up being done. (this last one is not safety specifically, i know) Rigel 01:38, 29 October 2008 (PDT)

Other things we will need:
* Fire extinguisher: ABC type for sure.
* Bucket of sand. Check it once a week to make sure that the sand hasn't accreted into a solid block.
* Nitrile gloves should always be in stock; they can be had cheap from American Science and Surplus.
* Keep baking soda around for neutralizing acid spills, vinegar for neutralizing base spills.
* Paper towels, loads of them.
* A couple of lab coats. (~$17 at AS&S I think)
* Safety goggles!!!!!
* Eyewash bottle (always keep full with clean distilled water)
* Decontamination shower (we might want to set this up outside in the alley, can make one from PVC)
* Sulfur powder if anyone is working with mercury

Learn about Locksport, where we learn about locks and how to open them! I'll be giving a quick overview including legality, different types of locks and how they work, and of course how to open them. The workshop/practice portion will focus on the standard Pin and Tumbler locks that are common on most doors.

Charlie will have approx. 8 sets of lockpick tools and around 4-6 practice locks

Add your name below if you're interested. Also, put down what time might be good, I'm thinking either Wed, Thurs night or Sat Afternoon/Evening.
Status
We began building Noisebridge in Feb 2007. Since December 2007 we've had regular Tuesday meetings, and as of October 1st 2008, we have a physical space. We are currently in the process of ironing out membership procedures and guidelines.
Mediapathichttps://www.noisebridge.net/index.php?title=Concepts&diff=2608Concepts2008-12-17T01:20:54Z
Mediapathic:

Please explore and add-to a list of project concepts.

When you add your concept give only a short description of your concept, then make another page to present further details, media, and discussion of the project. Make sure to sign your name or add contact info so interested parties can offer support!

Transit status information
I've written something that uses together with Festival to give announcements about BART trains approaching 16th Street. I intend on setting this up with a cron job to run around the time of the scheduled last trains every night (and maybe the first train in the morning if we think people may frequently stay until around 4:00 a.m.!), using the music server once it's stable. To avoid annoying people this should probably not be configured to make regular announcements at other times. Two extensions to make this more useful: (1) if we can get or make a USB-to-buttons/switches or parallel-port-to-buttons/switches adapter, we can have a big button somewhere that causes an announcement to occur (for use when people are thinking of catching BART and want to know when it's coming). (2) If we can get a big scrolling LED sign with computer control, we can have it constantly display train status -- as well as Muni bus announcements with data from NextBus, perhaps using a library to get it.
RepRap
RepRaps are a kind of homemade 3D printers capable of self-replicating, as well as being used for rapid prototyping and manufacturing. There is interest in constructing a RepRap at NoiseBridge. See RepRap.

Ambient Activity Mutating Space
Place properly signed microphones in part of the space. Pick up conversations, feed them to voice recognition software. Extract nouns and phrases from the results. Render the top results from searching these phrases on displays in the space, twitter them on the Noisebridge twitter stream, and do other fun things. Maybe also do gesture recognition, too. See Ambient Activity Mutating Space.
there's a saying to the effect that the first batch is always ruined. a similar saying says don't buy any software with a rev of 1.0. is there such a saying about wikis? should there be? what about refactoring this wiki so's to make it easier to navigate (e.g. don't have two separate "infrastructure" sections)? --Jstockford 16:38, 19 October 2008 (PDT)

This falls very much into the category of Just Do It. That said, it's a fairly big job that I personally have not found time to take on. If anyone wants to collaborate on wiki reorganization I'm up for that (I like Organized). Rachel 16:49, 19 October 2008 (PDT)
Hologlyphic Video Art Project
Basic project proposal:

Create an extension of existing True 3D video art performance system that would be much larger and in full color. In the existing monochromatic 6” to 19” sized system viewers see true 3D stereoscopic moving images without special glasses. A viewer can move left to right and see multiple perspectives of the same object, and multiple viewers can each see their own unique view, as in the real world. The technical process is not holography, but the visual result is the same as a white light hologram.

Collaboration proposal:

Several designs for a larger system have been worked out, after a few people see the 3D video art system, we can discuss the various methods, to asses which approach we may take.There will be two main phases to the project, the technical development and then creative content development stage, although there will be some overlap, in a good sense. See Hologlyphic Video Art.
seems likely that people working on electronic projects would find a variable power supply and a function generator handy along with some other basic test gear (e.g. pink noise generator, resistance bridge, LC measuring device...). many such things are available as kits. i've got one or two myself and would like to build them down there and leave them for people to use. what cautions wrt other peoples' careful use? signs or brief instruction sheets helpful? --Jstockford 16:38, 19 October 2008 (PDT)
Pimping up the lights
I want to pimp up Noisebridge's lights with a digital web-controlled interface. (Don't worry, there will still be switches that just-work.) See Lighting. Once I have enough work done, I'll bring it up at a meeting. If anyone wants to help with construction or software, let me know. I think I have the electronics under control. -- Dstaff
Wiki Watch
the wiki is getting wacky. over time it may get so crufty as to be unhelpful. this "concept" suggests some of us pay attention to our wiki to keep it useful, something like managing a garden:
* some items are old and no longer useful, like weeds, they should be removed. if an audit trail or history is needed, move old stuff to an antiquities section.
* there are redundancies which should be consolidated (move all the gardenias to the same bed).
* it might be nice to use the discussion (talk) pages more and the article pages less so the text on the article pages reflects concensus of the discussion (and reduces the amount of words the reader must slog through).
* wiki technologies offer some features that might be good to promote. an example is "categories": if you look at special pages, you'll see a categories page listed; click it and you'll see the categories, one of which is "projects". it might be nice that we're aware of the projects category and tag some articles as projects. the benefit is easier wiki navigation. the downside, of course, is that all humans, even enlightened intelligent and well-meaning humans, are at times douchebags and won't bother to read about how to do things in ways other than what the current feelings dictate.

if you have feelings about watching the wiki, add your voice, please. perhaps we can get up a wikiwatch group to encourage each other to manage the mess. --Jstockford 09:13, 14 November 2008 (PST)
Getting and Giving Stuff
if we get stuff, where to put it? there are the sharing and hacking shelves, probably incoming should go on one of those two sets.

it would be nice to have an outgoing shelf, a place to put stuff that we no longer want. maybe the very bottom shelf in the hacking set? other?

how about trips to take stuff to ACCRC? a trip to ACCRC could be just to take stuff, just to see the place, just to spend time working as volunteers, or some combo. --Jstockford 10:35, 17 November 2008 (PST)
Mediapathichttps://www.noisebridge.net/index.php?title=Payphone&diff=2601Payphone2008-12-12T12:43:28Z
Mediapathic: /* The Phone */

Project Payphone
The Idea
There has been much talk of hooking up a payphone to a cheap VoIP account and allowing free use of it as a Noisebridge public service. A popular idea is to put said payphone outside of 83C for public use. Some of us have expressed grave concerns that this will be too much of a liability and quickly result in us no longer having said payphone. Expect bickering over the issue.

The Phone
An awesome old red payphone was serendipitously discovered abandoned on Grand Avenue in Oakland. Our local hero picked it up and brought it to the space.

We got it open to discover the following:

*The date of manufacture seems to be a very scribbly Aug. 1988.

*It is completely missing the coin counting and collecting mechanism.

*The keypad and hang-up switch look intact. The metal buttons on the outside actually just press against a standard little plastic keypad on the inside.

*The headset is not connected to anything, but terminates in four red, black, green and yellow wires that can be hooked up to a standard RJ11 (normal phone jack) connector.

*Out of the keypad/hang-up switch part there is a DB15 connector, equally hooked up to nothing. The assumption is that both this and the headset were connected to the coin counting mechanism which was the brains of the operation.

*We'll likely need to gut another phone for some missing parts, but how much surgery is needed will depend on what that DB15 connector can do for us. For that, we need someone to find a schematic for the pins, or someone who is a master reverse-engineer. If that's you, get to work!

Well, Seth is a master reverse-engineer, and Steen is an old school phreaker, so one long night spent on this later:

*We decoded the standard schema for DTMF that seems to apply at least to both the gutted landline phone and the payphone internals, and determined the pinouts for both the relevant bits. It turns out, a button on the keypad doesn't simply close a circuit to make a pin hot, it activates two pins, which then correspond to inputs on the DTMF encoder chip. In other words, Dual-Tone doesn't just mean the tones that are output, it also applies to the signals inside the phone circutry. Neat! So now we can connect the output pins from the payphone keypad to the DTMF inputs on the landline guts. Seth is (I think) planning on bringing in a db15 breakout box in order to manifest this. Please no one break it further before we get a chance to do so.

*We figured out the order of wires for the headset to operate, corresponding to the (somewhat arbitrary) aligator clip => rj11 cable we made for the purpose. We got this to connect to the guts of a functioning landline phone, and got a dialtone from the VoIP box, as well as a functioning mic. This mapping is complicated to format on the wiki, it's written on the inside of the old headset in sharpie. That counts as documentation.

Photos
I actually took more pictures but I strangely had a "Memory Card Error" (GRR!) and these were the two I recovered.

Post more if you got 'em.
It's impolite to store logs of this channel. Please disable logging before joining #noisebridge.

For those who are not familiar with getting on IRC, here's what Mitch did:

* For Windows: Download and install Pidgin (free IM chat software for Windows -- there's plenty of other free software to choose from for Windows and other OSs).
* For Macs - a reasonable client is Snak, http://www.snak.com/. It's $29 shareware with a 30 day free evaluation. A better IRC client for Mac OS X (that also supports SILC) and is Free Software is Colloquy.
* For those who run Ubuntu and are not familiar with IRC (unlikely?): $ sudo aptitude install xchat

Then (using Pidgin on Windows):

# create an IRC account on Pidgin (good documentation at http://adammonsen.com/post/329):
## Go to Accounts (I got to Accounts by right-clicking on the icon in the system tray)

## Click the Add button

## For the Protocal, choose: IRC

## For the Server: irc.freenode.net
## If you have a Screen name (a “nick”), type it in as your Username (If you don’t own one yet, make one up)

## Click on the Advanced tab, and fill in the Real name field

## Check the Use SSL box, if you like

## Click the Save button

# join channel: #noisebridge:
##In the "freenode-connect" tab that appeared in Pidgin, type: '/j #noisebridge' (without the quotes)

# So that no one else can use your nick, you can register your nickname at freenode.net

Halloween is coming up, and with a suitably placed Soldering Workshop, what better way to prepare for the gourd-filled festivities than by soldering your own pumpkin hack?

With the bits we carve out of the pumpkins, we might even be ambitious enough to start cooking meals for the crowd - pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie: the possibilities are endless!

Project ideas
Some things one could make with a pumpkin and some electronics:
* Arduino-controlled multimedia pumpkin - probably on the more advanced side
* See no evil (darkness-activated glow), Hear no evil (theremin-pumpkin), Speak no evil (Sound-to-light-pumpkin)

Cost (and logistics)
We need to buy the pumpkins and to get enough components for the stuff people want to do. Mikael'll dig out a few cool projects from Make:blog and other sources, and post expected costs for the resulting kits and for pumpkins.
Hauling the pumpkins though is going to need a bit of coordination - not possible to lug on buses from Palo Alto :-) - we need to get someone to help out driving it all to the space.

In the end, you'll be paying for your pumpkin, and a few $ worth of electronics to put in it.

Possibilities
(Copied and formatted from a mail from David Molnar --steen)

Here's what I see needs to be done right now:

1) Identify choices for the overall system architecture
Each choice should tell us at a minimum
*what kind of key cards do we need?
*what kind of physical lock do we need?
*what back end hardware do we need to issue new cards, revoke old ones, and do logging?

The choices so far:
*A) das Labor's AnonAccess system
http://events.ccc.de/congress/2007/Fahrplan/attachments/989_anonaccess.pdf

*B) Something that uses DESFire cards from NXP (formerly Philips)
*C) Something that uses IBM's Caernarvon system, as mentioned for example here:
http://cups.cs.cmu.edu/soups/2006/proceedings/p114_karger.pdf

2) Find suppliers, prices for each choice
* For example, the code for the AnonAccess backend is in a public SVN repository, can be browsed here:
https://roulette.das-labor.org/trac/browser/microcontroller-2/AnonAccess?rev=2278

* This is a site that sells several types of smart cards, including the DESFire cards:
http://www.smartcardworld.com/mifaredesfire.htm

The key point of uncertainty for me is the actual door lock assembly. What exactly do we need here, and how do we install it into the actual door? What does the lock cost?

For example, this data sheet specifically mentions DESFire compatibility, but it does not state a price. We need someone to call these people up and find out the price, figure out if it can fit on our current door, etc.
http://www.saltosystems.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=45&Itemid=44

What you can do:

*Contact the das Labor people and ask them who their suppliers are. We would probably be happy just copying their setup outright. Also ask about their door lock setup.
*Contact the people with the data sheet above and find out if that lock will work with our door and how much it costs. If it doesn't work, find out if they have a lock that works.
*Find out what back end software we need or special equipment we need if we go the DESFire route.
*I have contacted Paul Karger at IBM to ask about Caernarvon. If you happen to find a supplier that can work with us on that option, that'd be cool too.
Mediapathichttps://www.noisebridge.net/index.php?title=Talk:83C&diff=1148Talk:83C2008-10-01T12:04:22Z
Mediapathic: New page: I'm not 100% that the link to the Access System goes here.
Fill out insurance app

See Below.

David took notes, which are far more comprehensive than what I wrote above. I (steen), paste them here, with an attempt at formatting. Any transcription errors are probably mine.

1) Buildout Team

* Andy is leading a team of people to build out the space. Please contact him / update the wiki / just show up to join the team!
Everybody welcome!

* The team will procure furniture, make shelves, lay out stuff, etc.
* Work will start in the afternoons, continue into evenings, so even if you have a job there will be opportunities to help.
* More cleaning to come as well, including power washer for street
* There is a wiki page with a list of stuff we want for the space. Edit!
* Bill Pollock has contact at Bear Stearns liquidators. Andy will contact Bill with list of stuff taken from wiki tomorrow (Wednesday 1 October) morning. Please add stuff to the wiki before then!

2) Keys, Doors, and Locks.

* Currently each board member has a key to the space
* For now, everyone gets keys who wants 'em. Stop by the space during buildout and have a current key holder help you duplicate the key.
* Asheesh will donate a prepaid TMobile phone to the space to act as office phone -- call ahead to see if people in the space!
** Number goes on Wiki
** Eventually also have web cam? Metasense?
* Add calendar to MediaWiki to schedule key holder presence
* Everyone leaves when last key holder leaves - impossible to turn deadbolt without key.
* Neighborhood has drug issues, be careful with valuables, parking car outside, etc. Always make sure the space is locked+closed if last one leaving!

* Jake and David M. are leading the Lock Team to replace keys with some kind of keycard system, most likely das labor's AnonAccess system.
Please e-mail David M. if you are up for this, even if you have already told him about it or raised your hand at the meeting. (Notes say Asheesh, Audrey, Jake, Steen, David M., sure I missed someone.)

* We need to look at adding grates to the front window above the door.
* We also need a stronger door.

3) Donations and Loans

* Lots of discussion about how to handle donations to the space
* Rough consensus: Donations to Noisebridge --> no strings attached
** No "loan it to the space for now, take it back later"
** Have right to throw stuff away if needed
** Want to avoid people feeling upset when "their" communal thing breaks, when can't re-take control of item, when item not used
** Strings not worth it; someone else will donate unencumbered
* Does _not_ apply to personal projects!
** Will work out labeling system for your own stuff
** Everyone needs to be responsible about project stuff
** "Be responsible to those who are responsible"
* Does not apply to things loaned for a specific project and then returned, e.g. tarps and brushes for painting.
* Noisebridge will make good faith effort to do the right thing with donated stuff, not break it, take it to good home when no longer useful, contact original donor if asked, etc.
** Put a contact on it if you want, but best effort only
* Once we are a 501c3, things donated for tax deduction can not be given away to individuals or for-profit entities
** We will work out a way to keep track of this status
* Recognize that stuff breaks
* Recognize that space will be robbed
* Members are all reasonable people, deal with this more when concrete
* For items with consumables, may work out special deals
** Example: NYC Resistor lazzzzzzer committee, $0.50 vs $1/hr

* We need to be sensitive to gray areas, too
* Members can make individual agreements to loan stuff to each other

4) Concessions

* Beverages will be in the space, possibly food
** Sol Mate, Club Mate, etc.
** Concession implementation team TBD later
* No vending machine
* Honor system, both for pay and for fridge
* Some discussion that honor system does or does not work
** Did not work in Greg's experience
** Does work for CBase (1000s of euro/month!)
* We will try for 3 months, see what happens

5) Official Communications

* Not everyone reads IRC, it's not logged by us
* We need a way to announce things to members
** Legal requirement, also good idea
* Adding two new mailing lists
** noisebridge-members - all members must be subbed, closed
** noisebridge-board - board members, publically archived
** both follow up to noisebridge-discuss
* If you hate mailing lists, we can work something out
** RSS/atom feed?
** Better client?

6) Soldering Workshop

* Mitch is holding a soldering workshop, time TBD
* We need chairs + benches, we have soldering irons

7) T-shirts

* Mitch gave away hackerspace t-shirts. Much rejoicing.

8) Treasurer's Report

* Mitch reported on finances
* Cash inflow of $11.8K pledges + checks + cash to date
* Currently about $3861 left after expenses
* $400 donated tonight

9) Membership Fees

* Start thinking about what you can afford
* Currently looks like $60/person for 50 people
** This is flexible for starving artists, rich tech people
* Will discuss at future meeting

10) Art Sale

* Proposal for an art gallery and art sale
* See mailing list for further discussion

11) Keep The Bathroom Clean

* Cleaning up after other people in the bathroom is terrible
* Please be considerate of your fellow members

12) Maid Service

* Andy suggested obtaining maid service for bathroom + kitchen
* Mitch knows person who does green cleaning for $80/month

13) Interpretive Arson/Art Heavy Industries (IA/AHI)

* The Dance Dance Immolation and 2\piR people
* Recently suffered setback due to fire at previous space, NIMBY
* Several IA/AHI members interested in doing work related to IA/AHI at the Noisebridge space
* Several current Noisebridge people involved with IA/AHI
* General agreement that a formal partnership does not make sense
* General agreement that we are really happy to have people from IA/AHI join as plain old Noisebridge members and work on IA/AHI projects.
* No need for every project to be branded as Noisebridge!

14) Space Modifications

* We can paint the interior walls
* We can not modify windows, load bearing walls w/o landlord OK
* Permanent changes to outside, like mural or stainless steel welded-to-the-side-of-the-building logo, also require landlord OK
* We have the most chill landlord ever, however, so OK likely.

15) Neighbors

* On one side, experimental noise performer (who speaks German).
** "Will it bother you if I make music at night"? NO, NO IT WON'T
* Never met upstairs neighors
** Windows tightly closed
* Across the street people complained once a while back, no problem
Steen adds: When we were standing around outside at about 11:30 talking loudly, the neighbor across the street yelled out the window at us. I propose that we can minimize this by we smokers walking down to the end of the block when it's late so no one congregates out front. Filthy smokers need the exercise anyway.

16) Tomorrow's Buildout

* Andy will be around from roughly 2pm-6pm
* Come by and help build Noisebridge!
Mediapathichttps://www.noisebridge.net/index.php?title=Meeting_Notes_2008_09_30&diff=1141Meeting Notes 2008 09 302008-10-01T08:11:26Z
Mediapathic: /* Agenda */

Did we get to this? I don't think we did.

We also had a lot of discussion as to what happens to stuff that gets brought/donated to the space, and public versus private property. The general consensus policy seems to be: "If you donate stuff to the space, it must be no strings attached, and you must assume that it will be broken / hacked / set on fire / not be returned to you, although we are generally reasonable people."
