Official, Semi-Official, one-off and other events at the Noisebridge space.

Event Calendar
Not all events make it onto this calendar. Many events only make it to the Discussion or Announcements mailing lists, IRC or in person at Tuesday meetings. Best of all, Noisebridge is about people getting together at the space in San Francisco to do stuff... like in person. Some events just happen. Pay attention!

If you'd like to host an event yourself, we have advice on hosting an event at Noisebridge.

Event posters are encouraged to crosspost to the Google Calendar. View the Google Calendar, view the Google Calendar in XML, or the Google Calendar in ical format.

To post Google Calendar entries for your event, contact a Noisebridge member for access.

(Wouldn't it be great if there were a gCal mediawiki plugin so crossposting wasn't needed? Do you know of a good one? Help us!) <- working on this, need to upgrade Mediawiki in order to use some plugins.
**At our workshops, everyone who buys a kit ($15 per workshop attendee, includes a kit; $10 apiece for additional kits) will learn to solder. They will also work with hot glue, zip ties, shielded cable, a piezo electric disc and recycled bottle-caps to make a fully functioning Bottle-Cap Contact Microphone. These microphones pick up physical vibrations and transduce the vibrations into an electrical audio signal. Students are encouraged to bring instruments and found objects to listen to through the microphones.
**There is a dry-time involved in the materials we use, however, during that time, we will put on a brief performance for the attendees. For the performance, we will require the use of a PA.
**You can hear more about us at http://www.facebook.com/cmkt4 http://www.myspace.com/cmkt4 and http://cmkt4.bandcamp.com/, we have performance videos at http://www.vimeo.com/channels/cremedementia. Follow us on twitter @cmkt4.

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." —Arthur C. Clarke

"Us Juggalos have deep imaginations, and an awesome sense of humor." —Violent J

The video Miracles has earned Insane Clown Posse many new fans and an unfair reputation as being anti-science. Insane Clown Polytechnic is trying to clarify this misconception. Shaggy 2 Dope and Violent J have explained in interviews that they were promoting a positive appreciation for the natural wonders of the world. See the full explanation below.

Some people say we, the Juggalo fans of "The Insane Clown Posse", lack basic scientific understanding on subjects like fucking magnetism, light, and nature. Fortunately, us Juggalos will be outside the Warfield Theater on June 5th, 2010 to show that Juggalos understand science too.

To that end, we will be setting up a Science Fair outside the Warfield between 6pm-8pm to demonstrate several of the scientific principles which some people think confuse us.

We are not haters, we are family. We love science, we love ICP, we love the Fam, and we think that the more Juggalos who stand up as scrub for science, the less the jocks and the haters will make fun of the geeks and clowns and ninjas who really run the muthafucking world.
Violent J Explains ICP's Stance On Science
Here's what Shaggy said in an interview about Miracles from Hatchet Harold:

I don’t know what Webster’s definition of the word “miracle” is, but we’ve always thought it meant something fuckin’ amazing and incredible. A fuckin’ special, awesome event of some kind. A great, wonderful thing. A fuckin’ miracle.

The song “Miracles” is classic ICP. Our listeners know we’ve always included one or two deep, meaningful songs on our albums, we’ve just never made a video for one until now. It was a good idea, obviously, ‘cause it’s got people talkin’. The truth is it don’t make us mad to see all the hate “Miracles” gets from the mainstream. We’ve been “The Most Hated Band in The World” for many years. Without all the hate on the outside, it wouldn’t be as warm as it is on the inside with the Juggalo Fam. Instead, all the hate “Miracles” generates makes us sad. Sad for the haters.

I mean, yeah, we get it. It’s funny to people on the outside lookin’ in, seeing two clowns rapping about space and shit, while floatin’ around in an orgy of screen savers. And SNL’s parody was off the hook hilarious. But when you step back and really look at all the genuine hate it got from everyday people, it’s hard to believe that so few got it.

Yes, most of the miracles we mention can easily be explained away by science, that’s why we say the line “fuck scientists.” Their factual findings sometimes explain away the Earth’s cool mysteries. Part of me wishes they were lying. Part of me doesn't want to know how they really make crop circles. My imagination wants to believe it’s aliens or somethin’. If people can’t relate to that, then that’s their loss. I mean, seriously, it must truly suck to have no imagination about these things. Us Juggalos have deep imaginations, and an awesome sense of humor.

As for the infamous line, “fuckin’ magnets… how do they work?” Magnets were like magic to me as a kid. You could move things across the table without actually touching them! I found that shit amazing and I still do. If you don’t like that, have a dick for dinner. As for the sun and the stars. Who looks up into the sky and doesn't wonder sometimes? Come on, man, I fuckin’ straight up feel sorry for anybody that can look at the moon the trees, and the seven seas, and not see fuckin’ miracles. It’s not about religion either. Nature itself is a miracle. Stand toe to toe with the ocean at night and tell me that shit ain’t amazing.

We appreciate all this shit. Especially a yellow ass, long neck giraffe. What’s a shame is how people walk around blind to it all. They lost their spirit about everything. If you can’t even see the miracle in animals, then you must have never truly loved a pet. That has to suck for you. Maybe you mother fuckers should relax that wound up, extra tense bitch ass of yours for a minute and go smoke a joint or somethin’.

Be an individual, step out and away from the flow of the crowd. Take a time out, open up ya mind and then peep the giraffe. Try to appreciate some of these miracles, bitch.

What’s a miracle is the fact that some people haven’t recognized by now that Insane Clown Posse will never die. ICP will go down in history as an independent music miracle. Get used to these ugly faces. MMFCLJ.
P.S. -
We feel like these haters are the big dumb, popular jocks ganging up on the little class clown scrub. When they have no idea the scrub is really a highly skilled, deadly, ninja assassin capable of cleaning their fuckin’ clocks.
:This is the one I've sat an thought about presentation ideas for. Really depends on how deep one wants to go - Huygens-Fresnel and wavefronts bending will need to be around if we wanna dig down, but the basic idea I've been thinking about is "Light bends when it slows down. Different materials let light go at different speeds. It all depends on wavelengths, and thus on color. Look here - a prism and a white LED keychain." Michiexile 02:10, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
::Richard Feynmann attempts to answer this question, with difficulty, after explaining that any answer he gives is likely to be unsatisfying. It's hard to discuss the fundamental forces in any terms other than their own. Mandatory listening for whoever's doing the magnets poster. -76.215.56.38 19:05, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Light never slows down, ever. Different colors refract at different angles because of their energy level. But all colors regardless of wavelength travel at the same speed - the speed of light. quasar
:Michiexile is correct. The velocity of light varies within substances. Snell's Law expresses the index of refraction at the boundary of two substances as the ratio of the the velocities of light within those substances. For example light goes almost half as fast through arsenic trisulfide as it does in air, so arsenic trisulfide has an IOR of 1.9. -Laszlo 18:20, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
Cool, I did not know that. I see what you're saying. The way I'm reading it, it's not the light slowing down so much as light taking a break and spending some time in an electron. quasar
::How far do you want to go into this? "Why does light bend?" Eventually you will start to overlap with the magnet explanation! :) --Macegr 22:33, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
:::It won't take long at all to start overlapping with magnets here. Not all that surprising either! The next step, however, is to talk about Huygens-Fresnel, and viewing each point along the refraction boundary as a wavesource, and then showing how the speed change makes the wavefronts change direction. Going even this deep, however, puts the whole explanation way past the one-sentence explanation, and even way past the 1-minute elevator talk. Michiexile 17:43, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
:::Another part that I haven't even started to adress is "Why is the rainbow round?" - which ties in with the rainbow "really" being a circle, and with how we see each colour only through the exact raindrops that are at the right position for the light to bend just right to hit our eye - which happens, for a point-shaped light source (the sun) to be in a circle: the circle of things that are just the right amount of (angular) distance from a straight line, thus giving the circular "rainbow". Final bit of _this_ explanation, then, is the observation that usually, rainbows are visible with the sun in such an angle that the rainbow is partially hidden by the horizon. Michiexile 17:43, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
::I'm bringing a colour printout of the illustration I linked above today. If anybody wants to use it in an explanation of rainbows, that's awesome; otherwise - big deal. I'm a lab assistant, not a scientist (see above), anyway, so I won't do that much explanation tonight.
:I can take this one. However, it might be better if we had a more focused presentation on magnets, but with some ancillary experts on topics that Juggalos may be interested in. Flipzagging 17:08, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Look here - a prism and a white LED keychain."
Welcome to the initial wiki page for the NBShooters Photojournalist club at Noisebridge. Our first meeting will be Wednesday, April 28th at 1900.

The primary purpose of this class is simply to be a fun time for photo geeks to gather together and push one another's skill. The class will take a basic scripted approach: where each week there will be a short demo/description of a particular feature of modern DSLR's or photo-journalist practice, followed by a thematic photo scavenger hunt for 30 to 45 minutes, and then a quick round robin demonstration of our photo-hunt results.

* 2010.04.28 - Basic Exposure: P.A.S.M.
* 2010.05.05 - Advanced Exposure: ISO and Dynamic Range
Mitch is setting up a huge Hardware Hacking Area (HHA) again this year at the 2010 Maker Faire! The Maker Faire is at the San Mateo County Fair Grounds, on Saturday May 22 and Sunday May 23.

Anyone and everyone can volunteer! No experience necessary!

We will be teaching zillions of people how to make cool things, and teaching everyone how to solder! We need lots of volunteers to help out. It's tons of fun, and for doing a 4-hour shift, you get in to the entire Maker Faire for free (all weekend)!

Here are the shifts available to help out at the huge Hardware Hacking Area for the Maker Faire.

Please edit this page to fill your name into a time slot that is not already taken. (All time slots are 4 hours.) After you fill in your name, please email me.

Volunteer Sign-up
After adding your name to your time slot, please email me (maltman23 AT hotmail DOT com) as soon as you can with the following information:
1) The name (first and last) you want to give to the Maker Faire people when you arrive for your free "credentials" (as they're calling the passes for volunteers).
2) The 4-hour shift you want.

If all time-slots are full, please email me.
HHA Volunteer Info
The Hardware Hacking Area is lots of fun! No soldering experience necessary. I'll show you everything you need to know.

We'll be teaching zillions of people to make cool things, and we'll be demonstrating Brain Machines to everyone (which attracts a huge, enthusiastic, curious crowd to the area!).

The Faire is open to the public between 10am and 8pm on Saturday, and between 10am and 6pm on Sunday. We'll be hopping the whole time, with 54 solder stations happening at once!

Getting to the Faire and the HHA
The San Francisco Maker Faire is in the San Mateo County Fair Grounds. Please consider getting to the Faire by means other than by car. Last year there was an all-day traffic jam (both Saturday and Sunda) on 101, which made it take hours (yes, plural) to get past the Faire exit. From the Caltrain Hilsdale Station it is only about a few hundred yards walk north to the San Mateo County Fair Grounds. Here is a map:
Hilsdale Station

Once at the Fair Grounds, look for the registration tent. Give your name to the friendly person there, and say you're helping with Mitch's Hardware Hacking Area in the Maker Shed, and they will give you the credentials. Keep in mind that registration may take awhile if there is a line.

Please show up at the Hardware Hacking Area a few minutes before your shift starts.

The Hardware Hacking Area should be easy to find once you get into the building that is being called the Maker Shed, which is a very, very large building. The Hardware Hacking Area will be one large corner of it.

If you have any problems at all, or any questions, please give me a call on my cell phone: 415-377-5993

(partially because Rubin expressed surprise at the lack of discussion): Why the change of logotype? Is the visual reference to the Weather Underground (I don't see the connection to the RAF, personally, though the same question applies) really a selling point? And can we, please, have the old logo back again - I liked that much, much more than this. Michiexile 09:14, 9 January 2010 (PST)
Practical game details
By GameMaster fiat, we will be playing a game that balances between Straight and Classic. We will start with a stock adventure and go from there.

Suggested gaming time: Sundays.

Suggested game meetings: February 15, 22 and March 1 and 8.

All these parameters are up for discussion, but essentially GM fiat.

Call for Players
Mikael will lead a game of Paranoia at the space. Given time constraints, it will either end by April or have a major hiatus by April.

There are exactly 5 player slots open. You become a player by grabbing a slot here on this wikipage.

# Alex (VonGuard) That handle @gmail. Z or C. Paranoia S? is that possible?
# Christie C or S.
# Reed, S sounds like the thing.
# sd
# Player name or handle

We also need to decide on which style of Paranoia to play. There are three to choose from:
; Zap : Almost pure slapstick. Puns are encouraged. Madhat firefight is encouraged. Actual plot and/or accomplishments are close to discouraged.
; Classic : A try to recreate the original Paranoia feeling from the 70s. Puns are encouraged, but not omnipresent, as with the random firefights.
; Straight : Dark drama. While the characters really do live in the insane world of Paranoia, the rampant humour that suffuces the other playstyles and renders them slightly more harmless and palatable is discouraged. This is the only style that lends itself to longterm campaign games, and comes with a dystopian feeling to it that would make Philip K Dick envy the game designers.

Vote for the style you'd like to play with a Z, C or S after your name/handle in the registration above.
e-ink display
Get our hands on as many October '08 Esquire e-ink magazine covers as possible and rewire them into tiles of one big low-power display. (PY's idea originally. -elgreengeeto ). Or, alternatively, just try to get some e-ink bulk from China and make an even cooler low-power display.

Transit status information
I've written something that uses together with Festival to give announcements about BART trains approaching 16th Street. I intend on setting this up with a cron job to run around the time of the scheduled last trains every night (and maybe the first train in the morning if we think people may frequently stay until around 4:00 a.m.!), using the music server once it's stable. To avoid annoying people this should probably not be configured to make regular announcements at other times. Two extensions to make this more useful: (1) if we can get or make a USB-to-buttons/switches or parallel-port-to-buttons/switches adapter, we can have a big button somewhere that causes an announcement to occur (for use when people are thinking of catching BART and want to know when it's coming). (2) If we can get a big scrolling LED sign with computer control, we can have it constantly display train status -- as well as Muni bus announcements with data from NextBus, perhaps using a library to get it. Schoen 23:30, 9 October 2008 (PDT)

T-shirt printer
I'm still looking into the best way to do it, but some sort of t-shirt printer would be fun and useful. Seems that direct to cloth ink-jet techniques don't look as good as silk screening, but old-fashioned silk-screen is hella old-fashioned. Maybe some way to achieve silk screening results but with only limited human-interference? I'm thinking that proceeds from über-fashionable Noisebridge t-shirt sales would eventually off-set costs of this project. elgreengeeto 16:32, 10 October 2008 (PDT)

RepRap
RepRaps are a kind of homemade 3D printers capable of self-replicating, as well as being used for rapid prototyping and manufacturing. There is interest in constructing a RepRap at NoiseBridge. See RepRap.

Ambient Activity Mutating Space
Place properly signed microphones in part of the space. Pick up conversations, feed them to voice recognition software. Extract nouns and phrases from the results. Render the top results from searching these phrases on displays in the space, twitter them on the Noisebridge twitter stream, and do other fun things. Maybe also do gesture recognition, too. See Ambient Activity Mutating Space.

Pancakes
there's a saying to the effect that the first batch is always ruined. a similar saying says don't buy any software with a rev of 1.0. is there such a saying about wikis? should there be? what about refactoring this wiki so's to make it easier to navigate (e.g. don't have two separate "infrastructure" sections)? --Jstockford 16:38, 19 October 2008 (PDT)

seems likely that people working on electronic projects would find a variable power supply and a function generator handy along with some other basic test gear (e.g. pink noise generator, resistance bridge, LC measuring device...). many such things are available as kits. i've got one or two myself and would like to build them down there and leave them for people to use. what cautions wrt other peoples' careful use? signs or brief instruction sheets helpful? --Jstockford 16:38, 19 October 2008 (PDT)

Mitch wants to teach a soldering workshop, and Mikael wants to carve pumpkins.

Time and Place
Saturday, 25 October, 3:00pm

at Noisebridge, 83C Wiese (near 16th St. & Mission)

Overview
You can learn to solder! Anyone can. Soldering is a basic skill for just about all electronics projects. If you've never soldered before, this workshop will give you the confidence to solder in less than two hours. If you want to learn how to solder better, this workshop will show you how. If you have soldered before, this workshop will teach you to solder surface mount parts with confidence.

Learn by doing!
I will have fun kits to learn with. For total newbies (and those interested), I will have kits for
Trippy RGB Waves project, a trippy, fun mood light using Red, Green, and Blue LEDs that has sensors on it to create waves of colors if you put a few of them together (scroll down from the link for more info). For more experienced people I will have a surface mount project (yet TBD -- but it will be fun!). You will be able to take your completed project home with you. If you prefer, feel free to bring your own soldering project.

Once you're done with your project, wouldn't it be awesome to fit your newly created functional LED thingie into a pumpkin? Making it reactive to ambient light? This way, you could have your own Jack-O-Lantern that only glows when glowing brings anything. So join in the pumpkin hackin' part too - with a light-sensitive LED circuit that'll take care of your pumpkin lightin' woes.

Cost
Mitch's teaching time is free of charge, but the Trippy RGB Waves kits cost $10 each (which is what they cost me), and the surface mount kits will probably cost about $20 each. Feel free to bring your own soldering project if you prefer (no charge for this).

As for the pumpkins, Mikael'll organize a pumpkin shoppin' trip on Saturday, and as long as you get requests through by then, you'll have a pumpkin. Charges for that: the price of your pumpkin, rounded up a bit to fund the cutting tools. Depending on size, anything from $2 to $15 (numbers are wild and unsubstantiated guesses).

Trippy RGB Waves lighting project
Imagine a bunch of little lights (maybe 20 or 40 of them), on a table, each about the size of a chess piece. Each is independent of the other. You arrange them around on the table any way you want. Each one continually slowly changes colors on its own. When you wave your hand over them, it creates waves of colors that follow your hand.

Here is a 30-second video of the
Trippy RGB Waves project in action.

More info on these kits is available at:
www.CornfieldElectronics.com

(scroll down till you see the section for Trippy RGB Waves kit).

Light sensitive pumpkin lighters
With a pair of LEDs, a transistor and a photocell, and some wires, resistors and cabling, your pumpkin will react to ambient light and light up when the photocell detects darkness. It's a reasonably easy beginners project - with no more than 15 solder points altogether, and a total cost around $5, including a battery and a battery holder to drive the whole assembly.
Overview
Halloween is coming up, and with a suitably placed Soldering Workshop, what better way to prepare for the gourd-filled festivities than by soldering your own pumpkin hack?
With the bits we carve out of the pumpkins, we might even be ambitious enough to start cooking meals for the crowd - pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie: the possibilities are endless!

Cost (and logistics)
We need to buy the pumpkins and to get enough components for the stuff people want to do. Mikael'll dig out a few cool projects from Make:blog and other sources, and post expected costs for the resulting kits and for pumpkins.
Hauling the pumpkins though is going to need a bit of coordination - not possible to lug on buses from Palo Alto :-) - we need to get someone to help out driving it all to the space.
