* Heather: Brief PSA. The toilet upstairs, the flush/refill thing is flaky. So it is continually refilling might need to fiddle with it.

* Judy: Every year the writer's workshop has done a fundraiser for Noiserbdige. We do it because it's fun and we like to do it. We tend to rais $500-$1,000 in a night. This year I propose we collaborate with hackers here. This year the event is called literary devices. We have 5 writers share a story, poem, non-fiction narrative. We had those stories to our neighborhood hackers to create some device even tangentially related to that story. A reward is available to the hacker that makes the best device. Weekend of Jun 12th (Fri) or 13th (Sat). Don't see anything on those dates yet. What do you think about collaborating? '''Naomi''': I love it. '''Judy''': I was inspired by the stupid hackathon.

The midpoint rule (<code>mcint</code>) approximates the definite integral of a function f over a closed interval [a,b] by sampling f at the midpoint of each subinterval rather than at the boundaries.

It is among the simplest quadrature methods and, counterintuitively, more accurate than its simplicity suggests.

The method is ''open'' — neither endpoint is sampled. Evaluation occurs strictly in the interior.

== Properties ==

The midpoint rule belongs to the Newton-Cotes family of quadrature formulas. Despite requiring only a single function evaluation per subinterval, it achieves second-order accuracy — the same order as the trapezoidal rule, which requires two.

This is not accidental. The midpoint rule benefits from a fortuitous cancellation of error terms that its apparent simplicity does not predict. A naive assessment of the method underestimates it.

The method is ''interpolatory'' — it can be derived by integrating the degree-zero polynomial that interpolates f at the midpoint. A single point, correctly chosen, carries more information than two points poorly placed.

[https://watchdogs.fandom.com/wiki/DedSec DedSec] is a fictional hacker group in the [https://watchdogs.fandom.com/wiki/Watch_Dogs_2 Watchdogs 2] open-world hacker sim game.

Ubisoft artists notably visited Noisebridge's [[2169]] location and made concept art inspired by the space to inform the design of the game's versions of hackerspaces as hideouts for the DedSec hackers.

My notes on Jitsi from our test run this afternoon:

- At least on iOS, you need an app (or to call in via phone). Other folks were using Chrome on computers. I used the app on my iPad; it seems to work OK.

- There’s a raise hand feature, but it’s hard to tell who raised-hand when, so doing it in the chat may be better.

- There’s a “low-bandwidth” mode that turns off everyone’s video feeds (but might also reduce audio quality so beware). You can also turn off your own camera at will.

- Phone works but audio quality is not as good as internet audio.

- No account needed.

- There’s a “tile view” (what Zoom calls “gallery view”) you can switch back and forth.

- Screen-share works. Sharing a video works for computer/web users but doesn’t play on iPad. Sharing a video also mutes everyone for the duration.

- Anyone can mute anyone, and anyone can unmute themselves even if they were muted by someone else.

The core issue is that it’s not supposed to be Noisebridge’s responsibility. When we ''try'' to take responsibility, we are told we’re not supposed to fix the elevator ourselves (fair enough), and when we try to get the correct repair people to come deal with it, we get infinite delays and quotes of $100K or more.

Thanks Ruth, for all youve done on this. Youve taken on so much of this yourself, and you shouldn’t have to.

I wish the community would rally more around this problem. As far as I know, not a single fundraiser has been attempted to help make noisebridge accessible. That makes me really sad.

I agree with Liz that its good to have NB around, even if it’s “able bodies only.”

However, what I want most is some /validation/ for how frustrating and exclusionary this feels. I dream of a time when NB community will be willing to hold 0.01% space for disabled people to express some hurt and (gasp) a little anger about this.

Emotions are part of being human, and shit, this is crappy.

That said, I still miss the community and the space there. And I’m very grateful to Ruth and others who are doing the difficult work to pick away at this with the landlord.

Money isn’t the issue right now. We’ve been having trouble finding a good elevator repair company for a reasonable price. Otis charged us $1089 an hour plus overtime for some of their work and the elevator wasn’t even fixed afterwards. The typical price is $300 an hour, but there’s been some miscommunication with the new company we worked with (I think the landlord thought the elevator company said the elevator was good to go and removed the first red tag, but the company didn’t do the process with the state to have the tag removed and the inspector came back and was annoyed at the situation). I mean to sort it out after the lease is signed. The landlord will pay for it.

If you know someone in the elevator repair business, please introduce me. The long term solution is to find a company we have a good relationship with, that’s honest about what they can and can’t do, and capable of getting the elevator in good standing with the state inspector. (There is a list of all the companies certified in the state that we can go through if we don’t get a recommendation)

I think everyone should be angry. This sucks.

In my opinion, there’s been a tremendous amount of shady behavior between our previous elevator maintenance company (Otis) and the Landlord.

- When Otis “repaired” the elevator following the fire department extracting a mentally ill person from our elevator, they cut one of the bars out of the inside gate because it was bent and blocking the elevator from moving. They never replaced the bar. One of the things the city has locked-out our elevator for is that missing bar, because it puts the elevator in violation of safety code. So at the very least they owe us replacing the missing bar, and their negligence ought to be reported to the city.

- I don’t believe for one second that an elevator company told our landlord our elevator was “good to go” and then forgot to call-in to the city. The requirement to do that was written on every page of the violation notice. And in our case, our elevator has such a bad reputation, calling in to the city is not good enough, they’re required to contact the head of the inspections department! Also, the elevator company would, of course, bill for services and provide a receipt; and to date, I’ve yet to hear of our landlord producing a copy of that receipt. A more likely scenario is that our landlord hired some sort of “handyman” to deal with the situation, and that person cut the lockout seal. Unfortunately, lacking security camera footage, we’ll never know for sure.

- To prevent the elevator from becoming “good to go” again in the future prior to being serviced by a REAL elevator company, I’ve locked the rear door in the “open” position using a $120 Kryptonite bike lock, and posted copies of the lockout notice everywhere. Two Noisebridge members frequently in the space have keys to this lock. I’d appreciate it back - intact - when this ordeal is over.

- I find it amusing how much more cooperative our landlord has become with it clearly evident the building lacks a working elevator. Perhaps it makes it more difficult to rent or something…

- Overall, I recommend the landlord just signs a contract with Otis (they built the damn elevator) - and I volunteer to supervise them …because although I’m not an elevator technician (and have no desire to become one) honestly I probably know more about our elevator than Otis or any other elevator company do. There’s no need for $10,000 limit switches - just a nut adjusted. The missing bar can be fabricated in our metal shop in twenty minutes. Whatever company that’s hired can probably be in and out in three hours including a full inspection.

Long-term though, the elevator is going to need some very expensive maintenance: the rollers that guide the cab along the tracks inside the elevator shaft are worn out (that’s why the cab can rock from side to side) and need to be replaced.

The reason the classes page is out of date is because most current teachers only take care of the noisebridge meetup page, no matter how much we ask them to put it on the wiki. I gave up on the current Wiki classes page probably around last summer as I was one of the few people who added or took stuff off of it. It is also terribly laid out in terms of ease of use, and many classes do not have pages related to them on the wiki.

Until the front page gets fixed and we have a whole wiki backup I am not going to do the wiki updates I have been planning since fall 2018. I am happy someone brought back the Wiki update party idea, and would love to help host it if we do do it.

This week’s meeting notes purposefully did not capture the last discussion item on the agenda, but in it I asked what I think is an important question.

The responses I got were… really strange. So its been bugging me all this week!

What I asked was, roughly, '''Who is your gut check buddy? The person you go to for a second opinion of a situation at the space, long before anyone talks about asking people to leave or god forbid 86ing them?'''

One person disagreed with the question and refused to answer. Okay, strange. Others said they were too new to NB to really have a good answer, which is also fine. One or two others started explaining their strategies for evicting someone from the space, in that they’d find some other person in the space who might even be new, just to stand next to them to back them up if things get hairy. That answer really bugged me because it took the conversation from “how do you assess a situation” to “let’s skip the assessment and jump to kicking people out”.

I’m not sure why I got such strange responses this week. Maybe I explained it poorly? So, here I am, using the entire noisebridge community as my gut check buddy for a read on this situation.

The answers I gave this week were selected off the top of my head which is a woefully incomplete list of [[User:Nthmost|@nthmost]] [[User:Rando|@rando]] [[User:Hicksu|@hicksu]] and [[User:Hzeller|@hzeller]]. If I have a gut feeling about some behavior, I go ask them in a DM and say, “Hey, please convince me I’m wrong about this.”

But still. It bugs me that my question to ask about how to assess a situation and get a second opinion was interpreted as “do you kick people out by yourself or with a buddy”. I’m not sure what to do with this feeling.

I think there’s two kinds of “important business” at the weekly meeting. There’s the culturally important stuff that Naomi suggests, like discussion of membership. And then there’s the business part of the meeting where we discuss consensus items and have discussion and hammer out consensus.

I agree the repetitive bits are important for new people for sure, but we also don’t retain people coming to meetings. Very few people become “meeting regulars,” which I mean very loosely here. If someone shows up for a second or third meeting in 6th months that’s regular enough attendance for me.

Most of the agenda is not true content, which is the real issue.

Announcements get far more traction as a post. Currently, 5 people take 30m to give 5 announcements to 10 attendees. This information get posted anyways, but not even widely disseminated (though i think discuss will make that easier).

We don’t talk ''about'' Membership and Philanthropy, we just ''define'' it, reciting an already written down thing. It’s not an on-going discussion. And to be fair, it seems like the community has learned the weekly meeting is not the place to discuss things that are contentious.

Likewise, actioning consensus at a meeting has been boiled down to a “it should pretty much already pass before it’s up”. I think that’s a good rule: If you have an item up for actual consensus, it should be defined and discussed already. But it does mean debate is pushed out of the meeting and all that’s left is process.

The rules around the meeting have been broken this year anyways. Blocks happen anywhere EXCEPT the meeting. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal personally, other than the fact that the meetng is supposed to be sacred around these things, or at least it sounds that it used to be.

And people who don’t participate in any fashion pipe up at the most ridiculous moments with the most inane things, but can’t be bothered to haul down to the space to make even one meeting a year.

So the meeting is mostly process and definitions. Can’t the weekly meeting be around beers, pizza, and talking only about what we’re hacking on and other stupid/interesting shit? We can have less process oriented rundowns of things. Like make the introduction section longer so we can discuss what people are working on instead of trying to blow though the only “getting to know you” noisebridge has.

I think the boring stuff we are discussing doesn’t have to happen weekly. I like to think of things in terms of rewriting the past to see how I feel about changes. If Noisebridge had been running fortnightly meetings instead of weekly, what would have changed? Would the chore become less burdensome if only required half as much?

Maybe we have a meeting scheduled every week, but every other week is slightly more of an orientation for 30m. that way people can show up 30m and be in the fun stuff? I dont know, these aren’t solutions as much as just thinking up different scenarios that might inspire someone.

I know you are making a factual point, as you mentioned. I’m responding to point out possible issues with the lack of current Membership applications, not to kill Membership.

The current practicalities of applying for Membership is that a number of Members know you and support your application.

For example, the last 4 applicants (incl. me) were asked/told by Members to apply and had support of a number of other Members. It’s not really treated as something you apply for, but it’s an invitation you receive.

So I think Members aren’t getting to know enough people not promoting enough people. Good people need to be found and promoted, possibly groomed.

I think reformatting is a solution, and I think Members reengaging the current process is also solution.

The current status is that there are fewer and fewer Members coming around to know people. The Members who do come around aren’t actively engaging in finding new Members that I can see. I can think of 3 currently who have brought up Membership to a few people.

I don’t have a solution to it, but it’s my current thesis.

At today’s meeting we discussed scope creep on the Trello board.

There’s a card with [[User:Mcscope|@mcscope]]’s name on it for coordinating the next mate purchase. I can definitely see how it’s fundraising related (it brings us revenue!) and also how it isn’t (has nothing to do with donations).

After much back and forth, what I proposed was a new step in our Trello protocol: '''If you add a card, it must belong in a column. If no relevant columns exist, you must ask the group if a new one should be created, or if the card belongs there at all.'''

Once you come by for a bit and gain some trust from the community, you can ask for a 30 day access token which will get you in the noisebridge door from 12am to 10pm for 30 days (then it then needs to be renewed). You need the sponsorship of a Member. You need to contribute something financially, benchmark is $80, can also teach a class or sliding scale if no job. You also get a key with 24/7 access. We want to have a Philanthropist open and close the space.

Big M Members are different from just being a member of the community, this is the highest trust level of the noisebridge community, it means that everyone in the community trusts that you would make good decisions about how noisebridge can move forward. This is an annoying bureaucratic level of trust, as the only theoretical benefit is that you get to block big C consensus items, and vote on who we place on our board. To become one, you need to go through a four week process, where you fill out a membership form sponsored by two big M members. You bring it to a tuesday meeting where it is submitted, your membership will be discussed at that meeting, then at the next tuesday meeting your membership is discussed again and if it gets to consensus, you will be asked to leave the room while the members present decide if they want to block you or not, if no Member blocks your membership application you become a Member. For the next two weeks any big M member can retroactively block your membership for any reason. If you get blocked figure out why, fix the issue and then reapply at a later time.

Historically, the requirements were higher, but less now.

I’d like to talk strategy on the most efficient way to get rid of stuff. Maybe break things down into scrap metal, build scrap piel of computer cases. Reduces ewaste. Dave : I don’t really see what’s changed by doing this. We already have conducted ourselves like to day. I’ve asked about 3 or 4 times, says that masks are required on white board. text of consensus item is just “small-c applies to mask” (basically pointless). We can do it.

pyconaut: there are several bay area hackerspaces. a sister space, sudo room, is at omnicommons, which bought a building. Currently pay mortgage, sudo room is a subtenant and has to pay part of the mortgage. Currently, bc they can’t hold events, are very far behind. Wondering if NB would be able to help them out with the funds we’ve gotten, or if we could do matching-fund / fundraiser, where we donate $9k if $9k can be raised.

Relay: QR Are we using NB funds to help pay their mortgage? (Yes), and they have a backlog of mortgage.$30k is what they’re trying to raise

dave : talked baout this before at length, ball is in their court. Need to make a plan and present it to us. What is fundrasiing like? Are you actually going to survive after? etc. We haven’t heard back yet.

pyconaut: Somewhere communication falted, because few sudo roomers other the one at meetting didn’t know we put ball in court. Earlier today, they asked about NB trying to help us out. I don’t remember it offhand, so couldn’t tell them. I’ll mention it to them when I see them in the next couple days to give us plan.

Sophia: Omni Commons is a large building with a bunch of collectives there. Sudo room is basically NB in Oakland.

loren: sudo room is having similar mask + space discussions for the same reasons. the additional concern is that people there are thinking about not excluding other people from the space. they think them using the space might exclude other people from the space. they are systematically different from noisebridge because they share the space and have to be conscientious about doing that.

ryan: david mentioned we’re operating at a deficit. they’re probably the same. how can they try to get back to neutral. lessons, etc?

mcint: They have rent an order of magnitude lower, but don’t have reserves. Counter culture labs was the seed point of Omni Commons, thought it would be good to put money in other things, so they don’t put money in sudo room. Easy for them to do fundraiser, so space can have its activity / working environment for people (cooperation over time rather than a lot of people at once).

pyconaut: what could help with communication channel opening is: they also have meetings on tuesdays 7 PM (actually Wednesday?) , one of them said they’re having meeting tonight. If someone from meeting could go on NB jitsi to connect to NB room, that would be great.

pyconaut: Why ppl think Sudo Room would not exist in the future? They’ve been in the same financial situation NB has, which is net zero. Even if don’t have space, they will still exist (existed without space longer than noisebridge has). It’s more if they give money, and they move out, it’d be moot. Not much danger of that, but it would set them back a lot, as they’d have to move equipement out. And will put all their stuff in Noisebridge (groans)

Sophia: Pandemic took a big hit. Noisebridge is close, but took a while to get here. Sudo Room is much less of a stable state than we are. They’re in the X and Dan stage where NB was.

Unicorn is a volunteer server donated almost 3 yrs ago. We have all this infra in rack, a group at noisebridge that maintains infrastructure at 2169 (old space) maintained through ansible at Github. I had no idea and was very confused. So what I did was raise funds to create a server and do our own thing. This is why we have discuss.noisebridge.info and other sever. What’s happening is our contract is running out by mid-November. We can pay for it again, but I want to move it to the [https://web.archive.org/web/20211028024756/https://discuss.noisebridge.info/tag/rack #rack] infrastructure. Set up in Ansible, a literal playbook, press button and move. [http://jitsi.noisebridge.io/ Jitsi.noisebridge.io] should be moved there, instead of the random Windows computer. They will run faster when put in better infrasturcture. We’ve purchased a better server for another few years, so we could have more random crap. Put it into actual infrasturcture. We have a month, and use the already good machines as opposed to current $10/month contract.

consensus is the process by which things that can’t be done through basic do-ocracy (things that affect others in the space.) It has two flavors, small c and big C. Small c consensus is the process where things that might cause slight issues in the space (events, big projects, moving rooms, etc), you just talk with the community before doing things. Big C consensus is the process by which actions are taken at noisebridge that are too big, too expensive, or too critical to be done by small c consensus. These are things like Moving, spending a lot of money, or doing legal bureaucratic garbage. This is a two week+ process where an item is proposed one week (if possible you should already have the item posted in draft consensus items, and the binder). At that meeting it will be discussed for a while, then the next week it will be discussed again, and if people feel confident, it will be brought up for consensus, and if no big M member blocks the consensus item it passes and becomes a Consensed item.

Hi all,

I think we should upgrade to a 150W tube so that we have a more powerful laser cutter. This will require retesting the materials, and maybe some re training of laser users.

I’m double checking with the manufacturer but I think the 150W tube requires a lead time of 1 week, and is $1600 (not including shipping from China). In comparison, the 100W tube is already in stock and costs $800 (not including shipping from China).

I’m waiting to hear back from the manufacturer, but I estimate $400 shipping.

What are your thoughts? Should we stick with 100W or upgrade to 150W?

Edit: shipping is $240 from China. Another option that Tyler reported below is that Frank, the engineer that looked at our laser, can sell us a more repairable 150W tube (has tube to counter gas depletion) for $2000

I guess we should come up with a list of questions. For start:

Is the life of a 150W tube similar to a 100W tube, or does a 150W tube last longer? (is lifespan related to # of hours or power use)

What is the status of our chiller and does a 150W tube require better chiller performance? Why was our chiller overheating recently and did this damage the old laser tube? Do we need to upgrade or service the chiller?

Is the 150W tube under warranty if we buy it from that company? Why is shipping so expensive?

- Ensure the 150W the tube fits our cabinet; higher-power CO2 tubes are usually LONGER

- Ensure it’s a real 150W rated for continuous-duty.

- There are long-life tubes available with improved components.

- Ensure the cabinet and Chiller can handle the increased power and heat.

The repair guy (Frank Bakonyi) was telling me about various options today for replacement tubes. He said he’d send an email with options he recommended.

Per his analysis: the gas in the tube was mostly depleted, and unfortunately our model of tube does not have a gas change-out option. A similar tube with the gas exchange option looks like the below:

He said that the chiller appeared to be working fine, but we should keep in mind the increased heat of a 150W and be sure our chiller would support a larger tube.

He also had a more modern 150W replacement option that they would sell to us for $2,000 with a 10,000 active hour life. If we wanted to go for a real upgrade…

Dear Ruth.

Here is a summary of my findings in regard to your laser status.

Upon my arrival with Tyler’s help we figured out that the power breaker was off, for safety consideration so the laser system will not be turned off inadvertently.

After that the laser system came on successfully.

Judging it from the red pointing laser it appeared that the rough alignment is correct.

For next I have tried to make a laser burn on a piece of paper as to see the laser mode, which is indication of its health.

At 10% setting there was no output strong enough to mark the paper.

At 20%, similar results.

Finally, after several incremental steps at 80% power setting, the outer parameter of the beam started showing up. It should have been an immediate burn in the paper at a calculated 120W output.

I have checked the laser power burns before and after the laser mirrors. After the second mirror the beam burn became weaker, so I cleaned the mirror just before it.

After that the burn mark did started to show. By the time it arrived to the focusing head (the cutting area) it was barely visible.

Also by looking at the plasma of the laser tube when it was ON, it was indicating a very weak energy level.

I did not find any refill attachment to the laser tube itself, nor the manual indicated to have any.

These type of lasers were manufactured in the US in the late 70-s. However, there were a small pressurized container attached to the side with a small zoning chamber which allowed the laser to be refilled several times with fresh gas since the laser on operation uses up the internal gases from the tube.

This is the case of your laser. It have used up the internal gas and it is not able to output any more reasonable power without refilling it or replacing it with another unit.

We can recommend two possible solution for your system:

Either a replacement laser tube (there are other makers with a longer lifetime indication) to be purchased and installed. One is recommended made by a more reputable Chinese company, Reci. They have a 130W unit.

These have local suppliers so the 30% tariff likely will not apply to them.

One of those units we could supply for you installed for $1850.00.

There is another solution, which gets more involved. It is to replace the laser with a US made industrial, commercial laser. It is manufactured by Synrad.

These are available used with various time on them. The lifetime of these units is about 15 000+ hours of ON time (when the laser actually is firing). It translates into many years of operation.

They do require a chiller also.

It could be grafted into your machine since physically they would fit inside your enclosure at the back.

Please advise of your thoughts and questions in regarding the solution to your project.
