Ableton Live is a popular commercial software platform to build sounds, sequences and effects. Many companies have put work into mapping commercial hardware to a set of controllers. There is a whole genre of off the shelf hardware that is "ableton compatible". Noisebridge has two units which meet this qualification, the Akai APC40 and the Alesis MasterControl.
