American Library Association conference event: A Day At A Hackerspace
The American Library Association (ALA) conference is happening in San Francisco in 2015.
A Day At A Hackerspace is an official, all-day, ALA conference event
happening at Noisebridge on Friday June 26th.
Computers have changed our lives, but what do we really know about them? Library/information centers can provide answers. Via this hackerspace-hosted innovative and experiential session, attendees will learn practical skills, including: soldering, and learning the basics of Arduino programing. Participants will leave being able to create and adapt programs for their own needs. Following this, a panel of Silicon Valley insiders and librarians will share how their institutions' programs on programming contribute to analytical thinking.
Itinerary
More details to come, but here is the itinerary we have at present:
- 8am - 9am: registration
- 9am - 12pm: hands-on workshop:
- Learn to solder
- Learn to play with Arduino (a powerful, general purpose, tool for playing with electronics, that anyone can learn!)
- 12pm - 1pm: lunch
- 1pm - 2:30pm: Panel: Several people from public and university libraries will present about how they started hackerspaces in their libraries (along with Mitch, from Noisebridge). Included will be the advantages and disadvantages each hackerspace had in starting. Also included will be the failures along the way.
- 2:30pm - 5pm demos and show & tells
- 5pm - 5:30pm: Lia Hillman, of the Business, Science & Technology Department at the San Francisco Public Library will talk about the bounty of resources available for free at the SF Public Library.
- 5:30pm - ?: mingle, network, play, hangout at Noisebridge...
