==What is it?==

Quick question. I know there are "formal" labs and lectures that go on at scheduled times at noisebridge, but would anyone be open to having "lightning lectures"? I'm kind of lifting this from the CCC format, but I think a lot of people are working on little projects, or maybe want to give a 5 to 10 minute talk on an idea they've been playing around with, and don't want to devote a longer session to it. I suggest this because I'm kicking around a few things I may want to present.
Five Minutes of Fame (FMoF) is an adaptation of CCC's Lightning Talks. The idea is that we have ten 5 minute talks within an hour. Talks can be shorter than five minutes, but can be no longer.

Everyone seemed to like it and had questions, so:
==When and Where does it happen?==

I like the idea of five minutes for two reasons: it's a good way for new speakers to help counter speaking anxiety (and get their name on a speaker list) without giving a huge long talk, and it's also experience for things like job interviews and product presentations. SF is a huge startup culture, and if you can't explain what your startup is doing within five minutes, nobody will listen.
Third Thursday of every month at 8pm, at Noisebridge. (note: this has not been solidified, and if there is a change the wiki will be updated)

Mitch: it could definitely be a monthly event. Consider it something like open mike night at noisebridge. I'm also hoping it could lead to a lot of diversity in projects, because if someone has an idea they're thinking about doing, they can do a brief talk on it and get community support.
==Why are we doing this?==

daniela: "open to the general public" is kind of tricky. My thought was we could have a single night where a bunch of talks happen, rather than some impromptu lecture that you miss if you come five minutes late. If we did something like videotaping the talks, I could see that some speakers would want to opt out of that.
There are many reasons:
* Some people are working on projects that are not ready for a full 30 minute or hour long talk, but they want to get their ideas out. Maybe they need help, maybe they want to propose an idea to the Noisebridge community.
* Some people are shy to public speaking and want to practice without giving an "official" conference talk, which can be daunting. This is a great way to try it out, in a community of peers.
* San Francisco is the mecca for startups. If you're trying to sell your idea to someone, you need to be able to explain it in five minutes or less.

jim: that's a similar vein, but a jellybean talk sounds more like an introductory segway into the main talk, whereas these would be completely random interests people have in no particular order (unless someone requested it). The advantage of a five minute talk is that if you miss it, you can find the speaker, and they can tell you what the talk was about in five minutes :)

Five Minutes of Fame

What is it?

Five Minutes of Fame (FMoF) is an adaptation of CCC's Lightning Talks. The idea is that we have ten 5 minute talks within an hour. Talks can be shorter than five minutes, but can be no longer.

When and Where does it happen?

Third Thursday of every month at 8pm, at Noisebridge. (note: this has not been solidified, and if there is a change the wiki will be updated)

Why are we doing this?

There are many reasons:

  • Some people are working on projects that are not ready for a full 30 minute or hour long talk, but they want to get their ideas out. Maybe they need help, maybe they want to propose an idea to the Noisebridge community.
  • Some people are shy to public speaking and want to practice without giving an "official" conference talk, which can be daunting. This is a great way to try it out, in a community of peers.
  • San Francisco is the mecca for startups. If you're trying to sell your idea to someone, you need to be able to explain it in five minutes or less.
  • "The Law of Fives"

How can I participate?

Easy - sign up to give a talk! Contact aestetix either by email (aestetix [@] gmail.com) or on #noisebridge on IRC.

We are still working out the details of things, but the sooner you submit a talk, the better. Ideally we could have a talk list sorted out a week before the event.

Other Questions

Can anyone attend or speak?

I think for the first run, we should keep things limited to Noisebridge members and friends of Noisebridge members, just to control the flow.

What if I show up late? If you are giving a talk, please notify me so we can rearrange the schedule. If you want to see a talk that you're going to miss, find the person who gave it and chat with them for five minutes :)
