Basic project proposal:

* Workshops centered around stereoscopic video art, seen without special glasses
* Create extension of existing True 3D video art performance system

* Create stereoscopic video art at Workshops

* Build several very simple 3D displays at Workshops

* Build upon the open source 3D display plugins for Blender

* Show a final artwork in public, and make all the techniques open source
* Existing system is monochromatic and 6” or 19” in size

* New system would be much larger and full color

The concept is to hold monthly workshops centered around creating art with my existing 3D display, and also building a larger 3D display, of a much simpler design than the current system. Besides increasing size and adding color, the new system design will take into consideration performance and creative applications.
Several designs for a larger system have been worked out, after a few people see the 3D video art system, we can discuss the various methods, to asses which approach we may take. Besides increasing size and adding color, the new system design will take into consideration performance and creative applications. Two main phases to the project, the technical development and then creative content development stage, although there will be some overlap, in a good sense

During these workshops, we will create 3D art and animations, along with music and sound. This will be recorded at during each workshop, for final editing into a larger piece.

I'm doing this because I love Holography and all related artforms, and wish to see the creative potential grow. Noisebridge is a hub of creative and technical activity, a perfect breeding ground for such work. I'm working on grant proposal, to be a collaboration project between myself and Noisebridge. It will provide funding for the workshops, cover any expenses for Noisebridge, materials to build the larger displays, a Hologlyphic video workspace for 3 months to edit the artwork, cover my basic living expenses during this 3 month period and finally an art show.

The funding is to cover two years of the project. In the end we will produce a collaborative Hologlyphic movie and show it in public, this is where the fun really starts, there is enormous creative potential

A 3D display design much simpler than the current one was chosen to build for the workshops, to ensure it's success. We can all learn by doing, and I hope these workshops can help spread knowledge of stereoscopic video systems without special glasses.

All the development will be open source, so others can create stereoscopic video based on these techniques. The display to be built at the workshops is 100% open source, I already wrote code for this display, allowing music to control the images. The display is very simple in design, and it's inventor has offered to help if any obstacles arise. The funding will just cover basic expenses, nothing will be expected in return from us, except to create cool 3D videos. This will not go into commercial development.

Creating content will take three main approaches. The first approach will be for Noisebridge members to give artistic direction to me, by describing images, sequences and concepts they wish to explore. I can then create initial images, receive feedback, and improve the images and sequences until the artist feels the content expresses what they envision.

Secondly, Noisebridge Members can create images and sequences analogous to working with video hardware or using computer 3D modeling software, via working with software interfaces turning knobs and playing musical keyboards.

Finally, as many Noisebridge members work with Processing or MSP, they can add more image generation features to the system. People needing assistance at any level would be given the necessary help.

This open ended process will ensure that no one will be left out due to technical skill level, nor will those highly skilled in programming be limited by an existing system. With the range of skills at Noisebridge, no one will be left out nor put upon.
Technical development will most likely be done by a smaller core group, with various technical skills, working to make a reliable, robust system. Any of the systems will require the development of hardware and software, it will be within the software development where most of the creative work lies. Once the hardware is robust and the basic software structure is in place, work can open up to a larger group of people. At first people with programming skills can develop content, and also develop content creation tools for those without programming skills.

I've been working with various 3D displays since 1994, for the creation of video art along with music. In addition, I've been programming computers for sound and visuals since 1982, currently work with Max/MSP/Jitter, Csound, RTCmix, Processing ect. Can offer hardware design, physical implementation and construction, programming, plus many oddball creative image generation techniques. I‘m an artist with strong engineering skills, specialized in 3D video, movies, ect without glasses, this is something I understand very well.

Assistance with various technical issues will greatly accelerate the development process, and none of what I will ask for help with is rocket science(I will take care of all the crazy esoteric engineering), more specifics on this next week after we meet and discuss this in person. The Hologlyphic Movies have been shown at many art, movie and technology events. More info/history/Tech-Papers on my site:
Possible funding is available, if not I will self fund the project. More info on this soon after a few details are worked out.

Several workshops where held in 2009. Participants saw the small 3D display, we talked about it's technology, other 3D display types and artistic concepts. The next workshops will be very hands on.
In person demo of the Hologlyphics: This weekend, time and place TBA. --[[User:Wfunk|Wfunk]] 19 November 2008
