Ball point pens can be beautiful too.
Colapen. Make a great pen from a soft-drink can.

What

Learn to use pen and paper for all they're worth. Make beautiful words. We'll start with basics of using a pen, exercises in making marks on the page, and introductions to forms of italic and blackletter. In later classes we'll make our own cola pens, 3D print letters, or laser-cut a letterpress font. Would you like to help design a NoiseBridge font?

What to bring

Recommended, but not required:

  • An phone/mp3/music player, headphones, and a few of your favorite songs
  • A ball point pen and blank printer paper
  • Any calligraphy pen, markers, ink you already have
  • Clothes that you don't mind getting a little ink on, a smock, or a very steady hand.

I will have some pens and paper too, so don't sweat it if you come last minute.

When

Thursday Evenings at 7:00pm.

We are just getting started, so if this doesn't work for you, please contact me. Sunday afternoons were another possibility.

There will be no class on Aug 15th as it's Five Minutes of Fame)

Where

Church classroom at Noisebridge

2169 Mission St., San Francisco, 94114 (at 18th St., near 16th St. BART station).

First time visitors should read this for getting in: Explicit directions and how to get inside

Cost

Instruction is free!

And the materials are almost free--it's a myth that you need expensive tools to make beautiful letters. We'll learn how to do it even with a ball-point pen and paper. (Many banks provide such pens for free. :) However, use of traditional pens will also be covered, and a few will be available for loan during the class.

Instructor

Stan James, a longtime letter lover, current refugee from the startup world.
