HOWTO moderate a meeting
Anyone can moderate the meeting, though it helps a great deal if you have been to a meeting before.

0. Say "Five minutes to meeting!". This will give you time to read these instructions.

(Note, while largely factually accurate, some descriptions of the meeting below may be heavily influenced by our note-taker's untreated Fictionalised Unreliable Narrator Syndrome. Please consult your internal Emperor Norton before taking it too seriously.)
1. Get someone to grab the membership binder. It is kept near the shrine, which is currently on the south wall, between the electronics and sewing areas.

Note-taker: Danny O'Brien
2. Get someone to take notes. Point the shocked and bemused note-taker to the sub-instructions below these instructions.

Moderator: Danny O'Brien
3. (Optional) Get someone to put this wiki page up on the projector.

It was a total nightmare. First of all, Josh organised this whole

up for proper consensus and correct producedure, everyone sat around looking
at Mike's ingenious elevator light LED hack and how he planned it, and
a new kind of logic analyser that's
basically just six wires and a USB connector, and some routers(?). Then they
all discussed the hacks they were working on, and some ideas they were mulling,
and sought out advice and shared knowledge with their peers.

It was unfortunately so "interesting" that by the time anyone wanted to stop,
5. People may have added Discussion Items to this page, or they may raise them during the meeting. If they emerge during the meeting, suggest that they be discussed _in_ the Discussion Item section, rather than derail other sections of the meeting. Discussion for these can be open-ended, but you should aim to wrap up the meeting within an hour. It can be handy to explicitly summarise what people intend to do as a result of the discussion. There is no requirement on you, Noisebridge the organization, or anyone else to do anything as a result of a discussion.
it was 8.20 already so basically we'd already screwed up the whole rules and
procedures of the meeting. Nice job, Josh. _Real_ smooth.

I kept waiting for someone to sue us for this, but they didn't.
6. If there are Consensus Items, ensure that they were raised in meeting last week (the membership needs a week's warning for consensus items). Your main job in consensus is to listen to what everyone is saying, make sure everyone gets a chance to say something, and then -- if the debate is beginning to go round in circles or settle -- propose a Position that everyone seems to agree on. If people disagree with the Position, they will wrangle some more, or someone else will propose a Position. If no-one disagrees with the Position, say "So do we consense on $POSITION?". If no one objects, ask the note-taker to record the Position. If things are getting nowhere and we're all getting bored and antsy, identify the people objecting, and ask them to discuss the problem with the proposers of Consensus Item outside the meeting, and return next week with a compromise solution.

Then I tried to get Dr Jesus to head the meeting, because he

looks like a natural leader, doesn't he? But he was too busy talking to
Gian Pablo about how to repair the Makerbot, and seemed almost happy
at shirking his genetic responsibilities.

By 8.30pm I realised that I was going to have to head the meeting

process descended into unmanageable chaos.

I went and got the member binder and started noisily flicking through it, which

I thought would at least shut people up. Finally I worked out how to get the
projector screen to come down, but couldn't get the video to work. That
attracted a few people's attention who "wanted to help me".

It was time to consense.

UNFORTUNATELY, just when I was getting to bit where I explain to everyone what
HOWTO note-take a meeting
Noisebridge is, our code of honor, how to get here if you're not here already
etc, Miloh started being disruptive and un-excellent and said "Hey, everyone
knows this stuff here, right?.

As moderator, I quickly established consensus through a show of hands that
0. Your moderator should give you five minutes to read these instructions. If they don't, say "Woah there cowboy, I need to know what I'm doing. Five minutes, por favor!"
everyone indeed knew this stuff.

Miloh then proposed that instead of doing the usual meeting procedure, we
1. This page should have a URL like "https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Meeting_Notes_2010_12_28", with today's date in it. If doesn't, copy [Meeting Notes Template] to a wiki page with that kind of URL. If you don't know how to copy wiki pages, say, "Can someone help me with the Noisebridge Wiki?", and get them to create a page with that kind of URL, and then show you how to copy this page to it and edit it.

not know, even members.

Look, can I at least read out the binder names? I whined, correctly.
3. Save the wiki page when you're done (no-one expects you to finish as the meeting is finished; it usually takes a half-hour or so after the meeting to get everything in order). Try to hyperlink stuff that should be linked. You can delete all this patronising instructional crap. Here's [Meeting_Notes_2010_12_28 an example] of finally edited meeting.

But it was too late, everyone was following Miloh around to see the electronics

where you can find Quagga, how easy it would be to program the life-playing Big
LED sign to do other stuff, how to get an account on pony, how cool the $500
de-solderer is, how to use John's new flat storage area in the FabLab, how you
should put empty bottles by the third sink because we're going to be making a
load of Kambucha, pondered on whether we should keep the shrink-wrap machine,
learned the secret Masonic History of 2169 Mission, and the true origin of some
of Noisebridge's most famous smells.

I tried writing all of this down, but our meeting notes don't even have a

it.

against every principle of openness Noisebridge stands for, you could ask [[

which is I believe a violation of our lease).

Hey guys! I was busy flying into Oakland from Alaska at meeting time. Glad to see the usual chaos ensued without my help. Our aggregate bank balance is $18,118.39. In December, Noisebridge took in $4,360 in dues and $5,675.60 in donations. Way up from a couple months ago! Next week I will have a full report on 4Q10, and we will be discussing our tax receipt backlog as well as looking at new accounting software options.--Hurtstotouchfire 20:03, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Discussion Items
I said that I was going home to write up the meeting notes. Miloh said "Hey,
(Add any new items for consensus to the Current Consensus Items page.)
can you do it in the form of a mid-nineties cyberpunk novel this time?", and
everyone started telling me what kind of awesome character they wanted to be and what tricked out skateboard they would be riding.

You know what? You people totally deserve each other.
End of Meeting
* PGP Key Signing could happen now, check the list to see who wants in on the action.
* Put back the membership binder by the Shrine at the northeast corner.
* Save the meeting notes to the wiki.
* Send a copy of the meeting notes to the discussion list.
* Copy the Meeting Notes Template for next week's agenda and update the main wiki page's link to it.
* Enjoy a cocktail with your fellow hacker or robot.
