Instructions[edit]

  • Pick a moderator and a note-taker.
  • Optionally: pick a membership-binder-wrangler; otherwise the moderator can take care of it.

Note-taker[edit]

  • Open a text editor to take notes on the major points of the meeting, using this page at the template.
  • Project the draft meeting notes and agenda in real time throughout the meeting.O
  • Edit the Current Consensus Items if anything is proposed for consensus next week.
  • Edit the Consensus Items History if anything was reached consensus or failed to reach consensus this week.
  • Post the meeting notes to this page, and email out a summary with a link.
  • Tell treasurer@noisebridge.net and secretary@noisebridge.net if there are new members.

Moderator[edit]

  • Understand the structure of Noisebridge decision-making
  • Make sure everyone gets a chance to speak.
  • Speak only minimally yourself.
  • Keep the meeting moving, and avoid getting bogged down.
  • Identify discussion items, arrange times limits for talking about each item.
  • Identify and summarize consensus, suggest things that need to be done.
  • Get the membership binder and ensure that it is returned safely.

Participants[edit]

  • Say your name before you talk.
  • Remain on-topic, and speak as concisely as possible.
  • Assist the note-taker with any links or corrections that are needed.
  • Remain respectful of other participants, their time, and the consensus and moderation process.

Agenda[edit]

The 210th Meeting of Noisebridge

Note-taker: User:Malaclyps

Moderator: User:Leif

Introduction and Names[edit]

  • Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to explain what Noisebridge is about: "Noisebridge is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides a space for creation, collaboration, and learning about technology and creative projects. Noisebridge provides space, power tools, and infrastructure to help the public learn new skills and create cool things. Noisebridge continues to exist through and depends entirely on membership fees and donations. Our code of conduct is 'Be excellent to each other'."
  • Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to give a brief primer on consensus process: We agree and so should you! Only paid-up members can block consensus.
  • Introduce any new or unusual moderation techniques that you may be using during the meeting like: direct responses, limited speaking time, orderless stack, &c.
  • Round of introductions (remember, announcements come later):
    • What's your name,
    • are you a member,
    • what do you do, and
    • if you are new: how did you hear about Noisebridge?

Short Announcements[edit]

Big thankyou to hak5 folks for their excellent event and lovely donation.

Zip02 is coming up very soon! Everyone is excited.

New or Stale Events[edit]

  • Is there anything new happening at the space?
  • Is there anything that has stopped happening at the space?
  • If this is the first meeting of the month, review all the events at the space and try to weed out stale events.

Danny has ennui about Social Engineering, but is renewed by the meeting.

Membership Binder[edit]

  • Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to describe the membership application process.
  • Read off any names from the binder for the past month. Write a check on every open application.
  • Anyone eligible to join this week should
    • introduce themselves,
    • answer any questions members may have for them, then
    • leave the area in search of gifts (traditionally beer and a lime, or cookies) for the rest of the group.
  • The rest of the meeting should reach consensus on whether they may join.
  • Remember to applaud new members when they return.

Financial Report[edit]

  • Funds in bank: $16607.14 -- $13700.00. We have just paid rent, so this is the lowest nadir of our month, but it's still under.
  • Noisetor (See the bulletpoints at the bottom of http://noisetor.net/finances/#summary): $2882.56

Consensus items[edit]

You may wish to invite a knowledgeable volunteer to repeat a brief primer on the consensus process.

Proposals from last week[edit]

(Add any items which pass or are blocked to the Consensus Items History page.)

Proposals for next week[edit]

(Add any new items for consensus to the Current Consensus Items page.)

Discussion Items[edit]

If an item of discussion drags on too long, further discussion may be postponed until after the meeting ends.

During discussion, it is not necessary to write down exact what each person says. Record the topics of discussion, and any items of consensus or controversy here. Detailed descriptions of the conversation should go on the discuss page for this meeting.

  • Keypad

Jake sez "Made a keypad from a phone. There's an LED, arduino, and it's going to be bolted to the gate. There'll be a CAT5 cable that goes to minotaur serial port. It sends keypad tones, and it can send back happy or sad. Software was written so that you could type the right number. There's a key to lock it. It is a good but unexceptionable lock."

Jake has built this so that people can be more comfortable naked in the space.

Leif is not happy about the keypad idea, but have been convinced to not argue about that. Keypads are shitty security. And we should be pointing out shitty security systems, not using them. Having a way to get in without using the buzzer. More ways to get in the better. I'm okay as long as all the mechanism is additive, and removing other ones is not so good. If the keys stop working, I'll rekey.

Kelly says noone has said anything about removing the physical keys.

Mark -- when I started coming here, I appreciated how I could come here without stuff. Then I wondered about people coming in and taking stuff. Noisebridge is looked up by other hackerspaces, so your decisions counts. I love the idea of the keypad, maybe as a complement to existing systems. You should try it. It's hard to make judgements about people who turn up.

Augustine -- My question is: who you trying to keep out? You can't keep out bad guys. It's futile to keep out anyone out.

Ronald -- I think the keypad is a good idea. We need more creative ways of getting in. We definitely rekey locks without landlord's permission.

Jake -- we could rekey them again.

Kelly -- I want feebdack on unacceptable features of the keycode generating system.

  • Laser venting

Leif says 'you're crazy'. Rayc says its better this way, and it doesn't smell.

Nick says it's not about the smell.

Augustine -- we don't know.

Jake -- we used to have lots of fumes, even when the lasercutter was in the booth. We are a hackerspace, we should work on the ventilation. Alan and Mike and Christopher who have been working on making a cleanroom for science, and they do extremely excellent things. We should work with them.

Tom -- I should have the reasonable expectation that people are doing excellent things. If you are claiming that the plastic is safe, you should be able to explain what the byproducts are, and test for them and show that there aren't any. You should test.

Matt -- says "just say something when you're cutting"

Rob -- makerbots use plastic and could be using more fumes. Corey said ducts need to be shorter. I think it's a good locatoin.

Miloh -- it's a negative pressure system now. That's kind of the standard.

Nick -- I was going to suggest a visible light.

Alan -- I think the lasercutter is in a good spot. It used to be anti-social. I just cut the stinkiest plastic I could, I sniffed around and couldn't smell it.

Rayc -- the improvements were put into place on Saturday.

Kelly -- can somebody provide 3rd party ventilation standards.

  • Membership expiration --

Kelly wanted to update people, and provide a brief forum for discussion. We had a consensus item about membership expiration, and hiatus expiration. We had some people expire.

  • DARPA -- discuss it on the mailing list.
  • Pets

End of Meeting[edit]

  • PGP Key Signing could happen now, check the list to see who wants in on the action.
  • Return the membership binder to it's rightful location.
  • Clean and tidy the meeting notes, then save them to the wiki.
  • Send a summary of the meeting notes to the discussion list.
  • Enjoy the company of your fellow hacker or robot.
  • Discuss any items for which there was not time during the meeting.
