= [[ Membership Binder ]] = * '''Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to describe''' [[membership]], and the application process.
Being a member of Noisebridge is not like being a member of a gym or your local chess club. Anyone can come to Noisebridge to hack and learn: you don't need to be a member for that. At Noisebridge, membership is something different: it means taking responsibility and committing to help to maintain, improve, and govern Noisebridge. As a member of Noisebridge, you don't just come here to hack and learn, you actively work to improve what you see around you, help to deal with problems, and make this community and space better than it is today.
* Read off any names from the binder for the past month. Mark down a check or other indicator on every open application to keep track of how many weeks they've been read out. * Anyone eligible to join this week should ** introduce themselves, ** answer any questions members may have for them, then ** leave the area in search of gifts (traditionally beer and a lime, or cookies) for the rest of the group. * The rest of the meeting should reach consensus on whether they may join. * Remember to applaud new members when they return. what does it mean to be amember? it means human uh membership is a lot like hilanthpy but youre concerned bout how the cultuer here is continued and you just really care, not onoy do you contribute to the culture filnancially, but you also contribute to CCCCConcensus, YOU as a member have the burden of blocking or not blocking stuff, and its SERIOUS if you block it severs ties w NB as a blocker, You will have a lasting impact of the space. Darryl: Fill out a form to be a member and get 2 existing members of good standing to endorse you and then you go thru 4 weeks of review process and on the 4 th week if no one blocks you, then you become a member!!! roy: on the fourth week whats the process: darryl: I believe it is at that meeting you read out your membership paper, you go away, people talk about you and then discuss candidly about you, while non mebers cannot block, only members can block. Then if it goes well you're great, but if it doesn;t go well then work things out and make thinks better! J: so we all can ask whoever wants to become a member to ask questions. And we have to remember this person is going to be a future of the noisebridge culture. Darryl: Its a process to dismember someone. Steve: yoi dont need to be a member to to anything here!A really good metric to judge wheather someone should be a member or not is they already seem like amember. HOLY SHIT, you're not a member, omg you should be a member! Merlin: uh I used to become here a bunch, I was on the board but anyway, nbasically that was like people trust you to not abuse your own power. I have been building my own workshop fior a while. So I became a philanthropist and I was PEERPRESSURED to become a member. I like teaching a workshops, and I would like to do more of that so hopefully y being a member if woukd make me do more of that!In the olden days it was customeary to bring drinks and I have a different gift from my travels that needs to be opened on the balcony. Mitch: does anyone have any questions to ask J: what is it about nb that you love so much? Merlin: people, obviously, thats always been the main thing, but what brings me back all the time is I know I can smoosh in here and early in the mornings its quiet but later in the evenings its poppin. People are always coming by who come by and its pop rocks in my brain! I love the whole asthetic of the space, qand how it has transformed and that its self hacking as well as hacking on other things, everything is maleable and everything is open to self improvement. trent: idk how familiar you are w the lease and the space change,w hat do you think we would loose or need money to exist or what cool things are happing that we could have? merlin: I have been thru a couple rounds of those questions at another makerspace,I always argued that we should stay as much as possible where the community needs us and can use us! that brings me to tech shop and all these hackerspaces need to be places that in words and in practice that you dont have to charge crazy fees, its more improtant to have what we have a keep it available. In terms of chamnging lease status its possible to find something better, but yeah you never know until you look. It can be a positive change. pros and cons. J: what are your vies on blocking and give me an example as something you would block and why. Merlin: its a tool you would use when your concerns are not being adress at a very last resort. So, its actually kind of something were more of an option, but when democracy doesnt serve you is that part of concenceus that youre not rail roaded into something you dont want to be a part of. Its a good tool to have. in terms of when i would block its pretty outlandish? Like if we didn't allow people of a certain skin color to be allowed at noisebridg. why do you want to be a member: Merlin: I became a philantrhopist bc its a structuredway of donating, but in the mean time its that I don't excersize my oppinions on things, and alsonI have alot to keep track of, but at the same time its nice to know that if things go downt the tubes I have that but it gives me an extr impotence if I am hosting workshops. Its mostly an emotional thing. Jay: Can you speak about the workships you've hosted? Merlin: I used to host a bike lights workshops and I love it, but we have all these spart people w tender skulls and we should protect those w skulls, it keeps you safe, give you a way to learn sautering, and give yous a way to have ann extenction of yourself and I love it!they took like 4-5 hours and then peopel didnt want to go on a bike ride bc they were too wiped out but there is a lot of other stuff I would love to teach here. Merlin iz Member!!! Darryl: SO liek I wanna become a member bc you know nb has really affected ly me significantly, it has changed me in ways that can not be undone, and nb is going thru changes as well and I want to ensure that the culture of nb esurvives, the potential changing venue, and steve harrassed me til I filled out the form, and yeah thats all. J: can you give us some of the things that you've done for the space? Darryl: I helped put up sheet rock on the first day I cam here and I painted the wall. I teach the laser cutter class but also the haskell class. I will also teach ppl the laser if they need help. I try to get speakers in for cool talks. Making blinky light art. Try to rent out things from nb as props, bc money, duh! Helping to find a new spce in case we need to move, probabyl other things idk. Mitch: can you talk about your ideas for C and blocking. Darryl: okay ooohh ideas idk, I mean I have oppinions about C, but w/e. For blocking okay this is a q that has been asled 2 or three times, like if I was to block something it would be if nb was to not be open to the public, I just hink that completeley changes what it means to be nb if you change that its open to everyone. Theres a strong future to nb, is its publicness, thats its so open, I wouls v quickluy block that. I really like it when we can push things in c concensuss bc that works v well if something has to be brought up at a meeting you're not even talking to people, I think as much as possible. Scotty: so you meantioned nb has changed as a person can you expand on it? Darryl: no. katherine: what is a pos vs a neg that can be improved upon. Darryl: one really positive thing about nb is it encourages people to in a way take things into their own habds the idea of doacracy is super cool and its not something that popl, get immediatly and its so different to how the world works, and if the world could be like that it would be great. its so important, you come to noisebridge, you change your view of things, and you go thru the world and think why is it like this, we function really well dooacraticly. like you go thru the world and think theres all this bs about not being able to go thru things dooacratically. a place for improvement: band together more and dooacratically maintain things on a regular basis, there is a tendancy to do things a lone, but there is also like we could do it together and get it done! Scotty: when you first started coming to nb we butted heads, a theme was that I think you had a tenancy to react to act badly to add rules or restrictions, and since I have been back I've spend a bunch of time it seems like you dont have that reaction, what changed?! Darryl: I think its much more the case, so you know when we got that flammables cabinent I threw the lock out, I guess my thinking has changed in that I have more confidence that even if someone starts a giant fire its not going to get out of hand, when things go wrong it will turn out alright people will be able to solve the problem. You dont need to put systems in place to control this place bc people are able to react accordingly. Scotty: can you give an example? Darryl: I've been here everyday for a year and a half amd its fine. maybe some things that happened a year and half ago are not cool, like the ps4 was undonates, various things have disappeared but it doesnt destroy noisebridge, its not about the stuff, theres no long lasting impact as nb as a community, my thoughts were wrong and completely different. Darryl iz Member!!!!
