Announcements

Bernice - on January 25-27, Global Game Jame is happening; Noisebridge is hosting again; a large amount of game developers, artists, & musicians, etc. will be hacking at Noisebridge! Me and Mark are organizing. We will post these at meetup.com/noisebridge & the wiki. You can contact me on email (Bernice.Chua.415@gmail.com), I'm "Bernice" in meetup.com/noisebridge, and you can find me on Noisebridge's slack & Discuss/Discourse.

Kevin - Currently looking for data anaytics job, went through a bootcamp; khmccurdy@aol.com

Zach - Found out that livestreaming through wifi for 5mof is difficult, and has a suggestion by using Cinemaker. Will talk to Matt for details.

David - I started a pacifist zine (120 subscribers approx right now); if you're interested in reading or writing about Non Violent Communication; email: digizae@gmail.com

Matt - SF-based based multi-novelist and "other magazine" publisher Charlie Jane Anders will go to Noisebridge for a talk on her new novel "The City in the Middle of the Night", on Thursday, January 10, 2019, 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Details are on https://www.meetup.com/noisebridge/events/257789039/

Victoria - Last month Noisebridge kicked off its fundraising campaighn. We just raised $5,000 with a couple emails. We're going to continue through this year; tell all your friends about why Noisebridge is amazing.

Financial Report

Finance hacker not available this week due to unforseen cicrumstances.

Fundraising Update

Matt - Noisebridge is working to raise money on purpose for the first time. We're asking anyone who we know to donate! 110 people donated so we can see people care about; Gala might be April 26th; Gala planning is happening; see Victoria for details

Victoria - we have a new front page! We also have a fundraising page.

Membership

Come to Noisebridge (at least once) to work on your own project or go to events/meetups, or work on Noisebridge.

30 day access

Matt - 30 day access is when a trusted philanthripist or member gives someone a token that works during the day for 30 days

Philanthropists

Explanation of "Philanthropists" Bernice - Philanthropists are more involved in Noisebridge; they donate $80 a month and are responsible for closing up the space at night. When they leave at night, they need to turn off any fire causing stuff, lock doors and windows; they help keep Noisebridge a safespace. Philanthropists get 24 hour access.

New Members / New Philanthropists

Explanation of "Members" Bernice - More responsibilities than Philantropists. On top of 24-hour access, they can veto/block big-C Consensus.

Consensus

Lady Red - 99% of what we do at Noisebridge is doocratic or little c consensus based. Formal Consensus is when we want to make an essentially irreversible change.

Victoria - big C consensus is for hard to undo things

R - samish text at two weekly meetings, not 4 weeks.

Discussion

Upcoming Cleaning Weekend

Lady Red - The space is maintained by all of us; we are coming up on our cleaning festival on the first weekend of February; we'll be hacking on the space and making it better to be here.
Bernice - there was a cleaning wiki page list, should we do that again? Example: https://www.meetup.com/noisebridge/events/253288065/ & https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Cleaning
R - Locker clean out; please fill out still in use verification sheets or clean out your locker.

Bored and want to sneak into stuff?

Anon - Take only pictures, leave only footprints, break only silence

Guilds

Matt - Noisebridge can be difficult to interact with as a beginner. Naomi suggested a guild system. After a tour, a person can express their interests and be given a way to contact a guild that lets them become more involved in a particular area.
Bernice - Try it and see if it works. How will people know about this?
Matt - Can we work together to create a new brochure / tour script?
Lady Red - I'm optimistic about the guild idea; good to try this. A bit of structure may be good. How does one join a guild? Don't want to have to find someone to talk to at the right time.
Victoria - I like the idea of guilds. Having a sign / display of the guilds of Noisebridge would be super useful.
Lady Red - there will be posters; I'm into heraldry
Ze - lollipop guild; a google form would make guild contact easy

Discuss discourse discussion

Victoria - last month or so slack was kind of gross; we talked (Victoria, Naomi, etc.) about the rapid fire negative feedback loop on slack; things escalate quickly. I came back from a two week break and felt anxious. If you miss it for a day, you've missed out on a lot of stuff. We now have discuss, discuss.noisebridge.info, a discourse installation. We can add you right now! What should we call this? Thoughts? Should we open it up to public registration?
Ze - since we've recently been talking about NVC, we should think about the environment. How can we make sure it doesn't turn into another gross space? Don't open it until we have a good system.
Victoria - Whole point of slack is to use it. Discourse is not rapid fire, more like a mailing list. Discourse slows things down and makes people think more about the words they are using. I want it to be invite only for now to set the table. Maybe open it up at the end of February. It does have nice moderation tools.
Lady Red - I'm optimistic about going to the new platform. Noisebridge has been good and bad on slack. Idea: post an invite link in the space. Make small part open to everyone? In general, slack has a way of sticking around
Victoria - I don't thinking switching tools gets rid of issues. Discuss will be more thoughtful and slow it down. Getting on slack helped fix Noisebridge at the time. Switching from one place to another was useful. May be good to start from scratch every two to three years. The lock on the door basically stopped sleeping.
Bernice - Before we allow someone online, they should have a debriefing or training or something first. We should tell people about the greater internet f wad theory.
Victoria - discuss has private messaging.
Matt - We had issues where we assumed everyone who needed to know stuff was in a channel but they weren't. It encourages us that there is group cohesion.
Eric - I prefer seeing people in person; I sift through meetups.
Victoria - discuss is amenable to people just sifting through it.
Elaine - I still need to look through it to see what it is.
Zach - One big issue with communication is people miss out on the tone and body language. An auditory social network might work better. There is the overhead of speaking but it helps with context. We've recently ordered some BOES AR glasses to try this.
Kevin - I'm not sure yet.
Eclair - What if everyone made an animated version of themselves that had their movements and body language that talked the way you talk but computerized.
R - we could differentiats discuss and nb-discuss by saying Noisebridge Discuss and Noisebridge's Discuss.
Matt - We need to move noisebridge.info to Noisebridge's ownership.

End of Meeting

We had a meeting!

Fundraising Update

Fundraising team gives update on fundraising

Introductions

Noisebridge is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides a space for creation, collaboration, and learning about technology and creative projects. Noisebridge provides space, power tools, and infrastructure to help the public learn new skills and create cool things. Noisebridge continues to exist through and depends entirely on membership fees and donations. Our code of conduct is 'Be excellent to each other'."

  • Introduce any experimental or unusual moderation techniques that may be using during the meeting like: direct responses, limited speaking time, orderless stack, &c.
  • Round of introductions (remember, announcements come later):
    • What is your name?
    • What pronoun do you use? You don't need to feel pressure to work out your entire identity -- just let us know what to call you when we talk about you in the third person.
    • What do you do ?
    • What do you maintain at Noisebridge?
    • If you are new, how did you hear about Noisebridge?

Short announcements and events

  • Cool new projects? Something you'd like people to know? Say now, but keep it short! One or two sentences please!
  • Any happenings at the space of which members should be made aware.
  • Don't hog everyone's time since we all just want to hack!
  • Check Newsbridge for weekly updates on cool things at Noisebridge, possibly not announced at the meeting.

Safe Space

Note: This section is experimental. We discussed it at Meeting_Notes_2016_06_28. We're going to try it for the next meeting, and see how it goes, and then discuss in the discussion section how it went, and how we'd like to tweak it.

Noisebridge is a safe space. Invite a volunteer to describe what that means.

Some specific points you might prompt the group to touch on, if it doesn't happen naturally:

  • What to do if you feel uncomfortable.
  • Noisebridge strives to be radically inclusive. What does that mean?
  • Noisebridge has an antiharassment policy. What does that mean?

Participation

Invite a knowledgable volunteer to describe who can participate at Noisebridge, including:

  • Describe how to get an rfid key for the door system
  • Describe how to get access to slack

Philanthropists

  • Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to describe Philantropy, and the application process.
  • Read off any names from the binder for the past month. Any applicants must have their sponsor present to vouch for them.
  • If there are no objections, they're a philanthropist! Their pledge should be handed over to the Secretary posthaste, after which their token will be updated to give them the 24/7 access they've earned(?)

Membership Binder

  • Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to describe membership, and the application process.

Being a member of Noisebridge is not like being a member of a gym or your local chess club. Anyone can come to Noisebridge to hack and learn: you don't need to be a member for that. At Noisebridge, membership is something different: it means taking responsibility and committing to help to maintain, improve, and govern Noisebridge. As a member of Noisebridge, you don't just come here to hack and learn, you actively work to improve what you see around you, help to deal with problems, and make this community and space better than it is today.

  • Read off any names from the binder for the past month. Mark down a check or other indicator on every open application to keep track of how many weeks they've been read out.
  • Anyone eligible to join this week should
    • introduce themselves,
    • answer any questions members may have for them, then
    • leave the area in search of gifts (traditionally beer and a lime, or cookies) for the rest of the group.
  • The rest of the meeting should reach consensus on whether they may join.
  • Remember to applaud new members when they return.

Financial Report

Consensus

  • Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to give a brief primer on consensus process
  • It is important that everyone in attendance understands at least:
    • blocking with verbalized principled objections.
    • why we use consensus over other approaches to decision making.
    • how consensus isn't a legislative process
    • why consensus isn't applicable to some things like conflict resolution, resolution of time sinks, and the like.

Proposals from last week

(Add any items which are consensed upon or someone has raised a principle objection for to the Consensus Items History page.)

Proposals for next week

(Add any new items for consensus to the Current Consensus Items page.)

Discussion

Longer discussion items belong here. This is the last part of the meeting so that people can break off and continue their discussion afterwards.

Discussion Items

If any important discussion happens, it should be happening after forward progress is made during consensus.

End of Meeting

  1. Return the membership binder to its rightful location.
  2. Discuss any items for which there was not time during the meeting.
  3. Enjoy the company of your fellow hacker, robot, or robothacker.

Note taker posts the notes

  1. Clean and tidy the meeting notes including removing all these really verbose instructions.
  2. Fill out the short summary at the top listing just announcements, consensus items, discussion topics, and names of new members and philanthropists.
  3. Copy paste the notes to the next meeting page. (They will become Last meeting at midnight.)
  4. Email the meeting summary to Noisebridge Discuss and Noisebridge Announce lists.
  5. CC on the email treasurer@noisebridge.net and secretary@noisebridge.net if there are new members and philanthropists.
  6. Edit the Current Consensus Items if anything is proposed for consensus next week.
  7. Edit the Consensus Items History if anything was reached consensus or failed to reach consensus this week.

Fun things to do after

  • Reprise of the Hackernationale. [This is anarchy - we do what the wiki says!]
  • PGP Key Signing could happen now (if it doesn't happen before any given Meeting). Ask others around the space or check the list to see who wants in on the action.
