Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to explain what Noisebridge is about:[edit]

Noisebridge is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides a space for creation, collaboration, and learning about technology and creative projects. Noisebridge provides space, power tools, and infrastructure to help the public learn new skills and create cool things. Noisebridge continues to exist through and depends entirely on membership fees and donations. Our code of conduct is 'Be excellent to each other'."

Steve - Noisebridge = community hacker space, can work on many things including hacking on the space. One rule: Be excellent to each other.

Short announcements and events[edit]

nthmost: Noisebridge domain names have been transferred to me personally. This is a big deal! Wants to transfer them to the Ghandi account. "I require a ritual of transference." Want to have an event with smoke and lasers and a ritual transfer of the domain names.

Ryan: 1. This weekend is the Stupid Shit No-one Needs and terriable ideas Hackathon. Sat and Sun. Come learn how to do stupid hackathon stuff, do a project there. I will not be able to make it. Giving my project to anyone who wants it. Pickaxe that mines bitcoin when you swing it. Miners could make an extra two hundreth of a cent per day. Will leave a pickaxe here, or just a pick. You need arduino, or raspberry pi. Less optimal than actually mining for real gold. https://www.meetup.com/noisebridge/events/258638768/

Ryan - 2. I signed us up for maker faire but haven't heard back about booth stuff. Some project ideas. We will be asking for a number of volunteers. I'm planning on bringing down pretty much every maker faire project we've made before so we need a lot of help.

Ryan - 3. March 17th, day before GDC starts in SF, will be hosting a talk at Noisebridge. 8 hours on VR AR immersive tech, 10am to , details on our meetup page. 17 attendees since event was posted earlier this morning. https://www.meetup.com/noisebridge/events/259110997/

Matt - Noisebridge is looking for spaces, our lease is probably up in August. We looked at 1049 market yesterday. It is a 10,000 sqft basement filled with stuff; 79 cents per sqft; $7,900 / month with 3-4 months free due to stuff in the basement. Currently a big empty room; pictures are on discuss (https://discuss.noisebridge.info/t/1049-market/306/11). Elevator wasn't working, no double doors, bathrooms on first floor (not basement) but are ADA accessible. Tiny amount of natural light, good power. Near 6th and Market, on Market Street. Some view area as sketchy. Effectively no windows

Anthony: Feels like the neighborhood is really safe (unless you turn onto 6th street).

: Right next to - interesting temporary space.
Ryan: Our current space uses largely artifical light at night anyway.
Matt: 1077 Howard is another option. Currently Scoot uses it as its scooter repository. Downside is that we would need to rent out portions of the space in order to afford it, so Noisebridge would need to become a landlord. No pics are allowed to be taken in it.
Ryan: Big garage doors.
Matt: $20 grand per month, need to consider the financial aspects of it. We currently can't keep toilet paper in stock. Probably someone who feels positive about this option should speak on it. Preference is to focus on buying a space rather than becoming a landlord.

Zack: Over at Starfish Mission, working on a crowd funding application. You specify the amount you need to raise and the number of min pledgers, no one pays until enough people have donated enough, and the more people who donate the less everyone pays. Starfish has the blockchain developers working on it, but ---They need a front end developer for the UI---. How many hours will be needed to make it? They do not know, since it is new.

Safe Space[edit]

Ryan: Noisebridge cares about the comfort and safety of the people in the space. Being Excellent To Each Other is a necessity in the space. Harassment of any kind is not tolerated. If you are not going to say something nice to someone, don't say it. Please read the signs posted around the space if you want a better understanding. Understand that people here identify as theirselves and they have the right to do that, do not be mean or you will be asked to leave, perhaps perminantly.

r: Sometimes it is necessary to say things that aren't nice. There is a difference between saying things that aren't nice, vs harassment.

Anthony: But try to say things as nice as possible

r: yes

Participation[edit]

Ryan: When you walk in the door -you are a member of the NB community-. Uphold the rules here, and you can participate here. We do not limit people, we seek to ensure that people can use the tools and facilities. If you need help, ASK FOR HELP, asking for help is being AWESOME. To get inside, you press the button downstairs (and wait to be buzzed in). And once you get to know people you can get a 30 day access token, so you can get in without needing to press the button. You can ask for Slack access after youve been here a couple of times, but we are trying to move over to Discuss.

Philanthropists[edit]

- 3 tiers of membership 1. Just coming around 2. Philanthopist. 3 Member.
Philanthropist = you want to partake in 24hr potential of NB. Need to be able to let people in, shut down the space at night, have been coming around for a few months, people should kinda know you. You need a Member to sponsor you, and you get proposed as a Philanthropist at a meeting. Std amount $80/month, $40 starving hacker rate, but price is negotiable. Philanthropist is pretty much like being a Member.

No one is up for Philanthropy this week.

Membership Binder[edit]

Ryan: Membership is our Oversight Group. People who consistently try to improve NB, generally are available to take care of NB. You are the Immune System that keeps NB running. This is a Responsibility, you get no perks. Do not strive for this. People who NB thinks would benefit the space in a role overseeing complexity. Members generally do not do much in the space in terms of Member items. Member items = Consensus proposals. Otherwise you are just like a Philanthropist, or a regular person.

r: Usually, another Member or Members will approch someone who they think would be a good future Member. Although wiki says you can start app with no sponsers, usually you start with sponsors. You need 2 Member sponsors, app in binder, name read out for 4 weeks at meetings, membership can be revoked in the 2 weeks afterwards. Members are the only ones who can Block Consensus items. [Big M] Members are harder to get rid of than Philanthropists or regular members of the community.

No Membership applications this week.

Financial Report[edit]

Do we have someone here with our current financial report?

(Seems like no.)

ryan - Fundraising Group is working hard to syncronise fundraising system. Things may be going on with our NoiseTor servers. (All but one have been shut down. The one that is not shut down is serving traffic, but website is down.)

ryan - We have enough money to survive here for a while, but our lease is ending in August. We need to raise a LOT of money for fundraising.

Question is raised about how Philanthropy differs from Membership in terms of fundraising. Generally they pay same amount. BUT anyone even non official philanthropists can donate online. Also there are donation boxes around the space.

Consensus[edit]

ryan - Consensus is how we decide things that will fundamentally change what it means to be NB. Slow process typically. Anyone can give input into it. Needs a lot of research and discussion -prior- to the proposal being brought up at a meeting. Depending on feedback, might be denied at first meeting, but usually it is moved forward to week 2, at which point it can go up for actual Consensus, where so long as a quorem of Members participate, they can Consense the item unless a Member chooses to Block the item. Consensus is the opposite of voting. Everyone agrees. A block means that the blocker effectively thinks that if it passes they would leave NB and never come back. This is for things like spending $30k, or buying a new building. Does not happen very often. Anyone can bring up a Consensus Proposal. Non Members can ask Members to Block though.

r: Anyone can make Consensus Item, and you can withdraw it if you made it, even if you are not a Member.

there are no Consensus Items for this week.

Discussion[edit]

Ryan: 1 short one.

ryan: Making sure people are following -small c- consensus, and taking care of the space. People have not been cleaning up as much as they should. Some people keep doing things with VR setup without asking enough people whether their change would be Excellent.

r: Similarly, equipment that it easy to turn on should be unplugged when you are done with it. For example the saw, which has just two switches to turn on. Unplug when not in use.

Ryan: Similarly, people who use the saw have not been cleaning it out. It is a belt drive saw that needs delicate calibration. It should never get filled up with dust. The chamber should never fill up with more than an inch of sawdust. It has been filled up a lot recently. That is not excellent. RE the VR, people have not been putting the cord back up when done with it. It doesn't have enough tension to be used as a tether, but still needs to be put back up when done so it does not get broken. It is a $50 cord, not a regular power cord. Also noticed (in the Hackatorium) a lot of gunk on the table, and lot of debris on LED table. Donations in a pile without being sorted. If you take out stuff for a project, put it away when done.

Ryan: If the Mate is running low in the fridge, please refill it. Ryan has refilled it at least 10 times in the past two weeks.

Ryan: The guy who swept the floor a couple of days ago (Johnny the drummer?) that was Awesome! (Applause for the sweeper.)

Take care of the space so it runs better for everyone including yourself. (IE so you do not have to spend an hour fixing a tool before using it.)

? : When is the NOISEBRIDGE GALA -- Music? Band? https://www.meetup.com/noisebridge/events/259286951/

?: It will be 27th of April. JP Krause (dude with the cool feather earings, plays base) is handling it. It has info at Discuss.noisebridge.info

The Gala is a big party, people showing up, showing their projects, perfoming music including DJ sets, art auction. (Please come, and donate to Noisebridge!) Still looking for performers. Want to fill three hours with music. Timeslots are available.
