'''Note:''' This section is experimental.  We discussed it at [[Meeting_Notes_2016_06_28]]. We're going to try it for the next meeting, and see how it goes, and then discuss in the discussion section how it went, and how we'd like to tweak it.

Noisebridge is a safe space.  '''Invite a volunteer to describe''' what that means.

Ryan: This section is kind of unique right now. We are often considered a  bravespace. We cannot say that conflicts will not happen here. people are allowed to say their opinions but someone might ask you to leave. Speak up about things you see or hear. Be aware of language but make sure you have the full context. Don't meddle in other peoples conversations. Don't meddle with people.

Matt: You should try to take the full context of things into account.  It is hard, but while no one is the master of noisebridge, we need to balance a lot with our radical inclusivity culture.  Judge people as Excellent until they prove they are unexcellent.  You may need to take action to make the space better.  No one is in charge.  Anyone can ask anyone to leave, and that should generally be respected.  Noisebridge is not really a Safe Space, but we strive to follow some safe space policies, see the posted signs.  If there is an issue we will try to find a moderator to help resolve the situation.

Robert: As a doocracy it is up to you to help make it a safe space. If you don't feel safe, you should do something to make it safer by contacting the mailing list.

Ryan: Do not email the mailing list. On the slack there is a bravespace page.

Robert: Do we have anything posted on the front door about Safe Space options?

Ryan: Some info is posted on the refrigerator.

Matt: check links like one above the door work still later.

Some specific points you might prompt the group to touch on, if it doesn't happen naturally:
* What to do if you feel uncomfortable.
* Noisebridge strives to be radically inclusive. What does that mean?
* Noisebridge has an antiharassment policy. What does that mean?

dont harass people, let them hack

= Participation =

Invite a knowledgable volunteer to describe who can participate at Noisebridge, including:
* Describe how to get an rfid key for the door system
* Describe how to get access to slack

Anyone is able to participate in the community, unless they are on the banned list.  No one is going to ban you because you accidentally let in someone on the banned list, just use common sense.  People who behave unexcellently are not welcome.

You can get on Slack if you are active here.  If you want to get on Slack, ask now.

Ryan: We are not really asking people to go on Slack anymore, we are encouraging a move from Slack to Discuss--Discuss is a much more open system, checks and balances that make it more public.  Makes people more careful about their wordings.  Kind of because it is a forum.

Putting all of your stuff on Discuss is Excellent, because it is more open to the public than Slack is.

RFID keys - A person with a card with an RFID tag can let themself in without ringing the bell.

Ryan: Member is a very specific term at noisebridge. Philanthropy and membership is different.

* '''Invite a knowledgeable volunteer to describe'''

jehan: Philanthropists donate to the space every month.  there is a recommended amount.  their RFID cards do not expire, and its 24/7 access.  same abilities as a Member, except no Blocking.  Application process is less arduous.

No Philanthropist applications tonight.

Can anyone here activate jehan's RFID access as he has been a philanthropist since May of last year.

In general if you are coming a bunch, you can ask for daytime access which any philanthropist can grant you.  It lasts for a month, then you need to have it reupped.

If you are interested in becoming a Philanthropist, get to know people in the community.

= [[ Membership Binder ]] =

Ryan: Everyone who walks in the door is a member of the community. Membership status is the immune system of NB. It keeps NB from not functioning. Or misfunctioning. Being a member is you probably want people to assume you are a member. And a couple people might ask you to be a member. All it entails is you have more responsibilties because you can block consensus proposals. And you are treated as somebody who knows a good amoutn about NB. The membership process you apply for it and over 4 weeks it gets mentioned at each meeting and on the 4th week it goes to a membership consensus process. On the f4th week the person leaves the room and everyone decides if they can be a member. There needs to be a qurom present.

Does membership have the same financial responsibilities? Yes. $80 is recommended, $40 is starving hacker rate, other rates can be arranged.

Matthew will leave noisebridge if they don't let people be a member because of the money. It's more about what you are contributing culturally.

Robert: NB should sponsor an SF airport hackerspace.

Robert does not know about the consensus process

Ryan: Other than for membership applications, we use doocracy and small c consensus. IF you want to change something that fundamentally changes noisbridge, like spending 30k. But you can put up and remove walls if you want without big C Consensus.  Most walls here were built (or torn down) without Big C Consensus. Big C consensus for plumbing changes or extremely dangerous stuff.

Anyone can bring a consensus proposal. Bring it up at a meeting, propose it, discuss it, then next week the members present can choose whether or not to block the proposal. Blocking has a heavy weight. It pretty much means noisbridge is dead to me if this thing happens. It is the opposite of voting. Only one Block (by a Member) is needed to stop a proposal.

Is a consensus proposal passed if it is not blocked? Yes. Even if you are not a Member, you can ask a Member to block for you, and if you have a good reason they may heed your request.

Blocks rarely happen because we do not have many consensus items.

Does anyone propose Consensus Items?

Proposed Member Lounge on the roof--Blocked, we are not allowed on the roof.

Ryan: Every Tuesday around the afternoon there is a call with Krebs up in Seattle, the firm that helps us with Fundraising.  Our current work is with mainly getting grants, which is pretty difficult.  We are currently waiting on a couple of financial activity reports relating to our past that are currently being worked on.  Once it is complete we will be able to apply to most grants.  We are currently applying to SF and California govs.  SF for $200k, CA for $1 Million.  Theoreitically.  Could easily be less.  But these open up the door to other grants.  Wherever we move, if we can in a declaration say the building will be LEED Certified, we can get more fundraising money, and be placed on building council recommendation lists as a Green Non-Profit.

There is also a group of fundraisers who are looking around for buildings we can buy.  SF ironically has some almost cheap business locations.  (Current market demand is mainly for residential rather than commercial land which works to our advantage.)  Lot of old warehouses.  Lot of old businesses have been priced out of operating in SF, but we're a non-profit.  We are looking for a short term rental location, can be smaller than our current 5,200 sq ft location, because will be temporary.  Our goal is a 4,000 sq foot place with a dollar per sqft rent.  Once there we can focus on fundraising the $4 Million to buy a place.

Are we looking at manufacturing things we could sell?  If you have ideas along those lines, you can do them here, even without Fundraising committee involvement.

The GALA will be our first big intentional fundraiser ever.  (Our past parties accepted money, but this time its a big concerted attempt that puts raising a lot of funds first.)

Ryan is working on applying for drink donations.

Info on the C Standards Committee:  Under ISO, close to losing consensus, would fall under another committee.  Modules will be in C++20, contracts, C++20 will be the new C++11, modules will be a shitshow, modules will not work the way you think they will.  It is super cheap to join the standards committee.  $2,200 per year if you're a big company.  If small company or non-profit they waive the fee entirely after the first year.  Turn in papework Dec 31, pay dues prorated, then get them waived next year.  And once you've joined one committee you can join the C Standards Committee as well.

If you ever want to go on a binge as fun as wikipedia binging, try checking out a food standards binge (ie standards on making tea or pizza).  A new cup for olive oil is being ratified soon.

Financial Report[edit]

Fix the noistor link

ryan: fundraising guild handles most financial things.

We have approximately 180k, and are almost breaking even in donations each month. IE we are running a deficit.

Noisebridge is fundraising for a new home. It would be ideal if we could buy a space. The fundraising group has been looking at spaces.

Discussion[edit]

Ryan: Every Tuesday around the afternoon there is a call with Krebs up in Seattle, the firm that helps us with Fundraising. Our current work is with mainly getting grants, which is pretty difficult. We are currently waiting on a couple of financial activity reports relating to our past that are currently being worked on. Once it is complete we will be able to apply to most grants. We are currently applying to SF and California govs. SF for $200k, CA for $1 Million. Theoreitically. Could easily be less. But these open up the door to other grants. Ryan is working on applying for drink donations.

If you know any rich people, or have a boss, bring your boss to noisebridge day is going to happen.

Play videogames while streaming, ask the viewers to donate.

Discussion Items[edit]

If any important discussion happens, it should be happening after forward progress is made during consensus.

End of Meeting[edit]

  1. Return the membership binder to its rightful location.
  2. Discuss any items for which there was not time during the meeting.
  3. Enjoy the company of your fellow hacker, robot, or robothacker.

Note taker posts the notes[edit]

  1. Clean and tidy the meeting notes including removing all these really verbose instructions.
  2. Fill out the short summary at the top listing just announcements, consensus items, discussion topics, and names of new members and philanthropists.
  3. Copy paste the notes to the next meeting page. (They will become Last meeting at midnight.)
  4. Email the meeting summary to Noisebridge Discuss and Noisebridge Announce lists.
  5. CC on the email treasurer@noisebridge.net and secretary@noisebridge.net if there are new members and philanthropists.
  6. Edit the Current Consensus Items if anything is proposed for consensus next week.
  7. Edit the Consensus Items History if anything was reached consensus or failed to reach consensus this week.

Fun things to do after[edit]

  • Reprise of the Hackernationale. [This is anarchy - we do what the wiki says!]
- Discussion as to how the theme from Hackers is our new song.

How can Mary Poppins sing the Hackernationale.

The Clean Up Song is our Song. Everybody Clean Up.
  • PGP Key Signing could happen now (if it doesn't happen before any given Meeting). Ask others around the space or check the list to see who wants in on the action.
