Meeting

Excellence

Our One Rule is to Be Excellent to Each Other.

(What does that mean? How does the Anti-Harassment Policy fit into this? Are we SURE we know what being Excellent is? This is an important and fundamental conversation at Noisebridge, so let's give it like 120 seconds.)

Participation

Everyone at Noisebridge is a participant at Noisebridge.

(What does that mean? How do you get a door key? Access to Slack, Discuss, etc?)

Membership Definition

Membership in Noisebridge entails community Trust in Consensus.

(What does that mean? What do we expect from Members? How do you become a Member? etc)

Consensus

Consensus is how the Noisebridge Membership may change how Noisebridge works.

(How does Consensus work? What types of things are good for formal Consensus? What is small-c consensus? What is a "block"?)

Short announcements and events

60-second description per item in bulletpoint.

New Philanthropists

Definition: Philanthropists can access space 24/7, as long as they are Excellent. Potential Philanthropists are highly encouraged, need 1 rec from Member. Noisebridge does offer informal participants as well, but it's pretty easy to be one and much appreciated.

New Members

Definition: Can make / block decision when doing Consensus (see bottom). Need rec from 2 Members, Q&A over 4 weeks - 2 weeks of pre-acceptance, 2 week post-acceptance (O Shit period).

Financial Report

Anarchist societies under a capitalist state need money to survive and thrive, yo.

  • Funds in bank:
    CASH: 233,982
    BTC: 75,725

Less RLK: (17,000)

    TOTAL: 292,705
  • RLK = roguelike fiscal sponsorship. i.e. holding someone elses cash

X (up now) - Potentially pay partial rent, but we should be prepared to pay rent

Rent set to start November 1 2020, per lease and next payment would be Dec 1.

Consensus

Consensus is how NB gets things done little c is how 99% gets done. If you want to, do it, but get buy in of general populce / people with stake in it. Example: Paint a wall Anything bigger: Moving Noisebridge, destroying the walls, permanent broad effects 2 week process, formally proposed. Any active members have the option to block consensus item. Blocking is if the item is hugely detrimental. 1 block = no go. must be redrafted so blocking member is okay. Most items take longer (1 Consensus was moving), but generally not often done.

Discussion

Discussion Item 1

Tyler: Now would be good time to have ongoing mailing list thing / weekly newsletter. Could include:

   - What's happening
   - How can I help
   - Youtube video touring place
   - What mantenance is like
   - Financials
   - Call to donate
   - Events and activities

I'm volunteering to start this up. May need to solicit feedback on Discuss / Slack, offer potential ghostwriters (Mary will do this)

Nthmost: I fully support it!

Tyler: Pretty busy this week, but 31st for first newsletter. Need 1-2 min walkthrough of space, uploaded to Youtube.

Nthmost: Anybody find ---

Tyler: I have NB youtube login, can add people

Nthmost: Add me, I can help!

X: If you can add ******, has 5mof account

Tyler: Can start adding people, except Ryan for some reason.

Discussion Item 2

Nthmost: Should we switch meetings to using discord, not Zoom?

Kevin: Why?

Nthmost: Easier to see ppl hanging out, dropping in

X: We've done some, considered switching to Jitsi, which doesn't require account. Have trouble logging into Discord

Kevin: max number

X: Never been able to break it

Nthmost: People kept getting booted after 15 ppl. be gone temporarily

X: On Jitsi's, didn't happen when run on own infrastructure

X: Depends on how you set it up, who's using it. Everything goes encrypted through server when run at scale.

Tyler: should be functionally identical to GMeet or Zoom

X: Basically need 2 systems, one for streaming and one for interacting. 5-10 peple wide, need more balance for efficiency and scale. Also got streamcast system working, looking at how to expand options

Dan: Don't like discord, don't mind trying it, crawl through broken glass. Discord would be a step up. DIY as much as we can.

Kevin: I find Zoom really focused, Discord is always arond, DJ is on all day, app is continuing to make bing bong noises.

lxpk: Can mute individual channels

Kevin: Still kept going. Maybe expressing irritation.

lxpk: Made Jitsi channel on Discord, so it's easier. Helpful for facilitating ad hoc conversation. In these times, especially helpful for screen collab. May replace it, but right now it does the trick

X: Made announcement that we're officially open virtually, people hopped on. People at welcome to do chat wherever. I'm working hard to have NB streamed 24/7 for 10 days straight. That's available. I'd love to ditch zoom, calling through phone now.

Zoom "official" meeting, should totally use discord/jitsi anytime as well.

There was a great Discord DJ Pre-hackitorium jam, instead of pre-meeting, could try that again and connect to jitsi and zoom too.
