Short announcements and events[edit | edit source]

Moof - The 9th? (Next Thursday) NOIsEbridge RAdiO 7PM @ the music room

Mark

Hacker Dojo is hosting a movie night tomorrow. 7PM "Real Genius". About science nerds. Generally the space is open to members. However for special events like this movie viewing anyone can come.

Elle: 2 sewing classes coming up next week. Friday and satruday after that. Hpw to use home sewing machines.

Loren got NB a grant. 10k for the front door.

Noisebridger Nick S. Wants to do an AI wearables meetup. There's a thread in NB Hackitorium channel in Discord to decide the time for the meetup. Anyone interested is welcome to chime in.

There was a fire in another hackerspace, Humanmade. Apparently that was caused by a faulty powerstrip. That's a lesson to everyone of us: don't weave hot things, turn off electrical appliances, don't play with fire. There are fire extinguishers in both floor rooms. Take notice and be ready to use if necessary.

Excellence[edit | edit source]

Our One Rule is to Be Excellent to Each Other. (Give a quick, 1-3 sentence summary.)

Examples of excellence: Hacking on projects in an organized fashion. Putting stuff away in a labelled box and not leaving it in a messy fashion. Doocracy - being the change you want to be (in a non-disruptive way to fellow Noisebridgers).

Making things when they need to be made, fixing things when they need fixing, and supporting those who do those things.

Part of it is to follow an anti-harrasment policy. TLDR: Don't be a dick. What does that mean? Please see our page on excellence https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Excellence!

Anti-Harassment Policy & Community Standards of Excellence[edit | edit source]

Noisebridge has an Anti-Harassment Policy https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Anti-Harassment_Policy Everyone is expected to follow the Anti-Harassment Policy, please familiarize yourself with it.) More approachable & specific guidelines, https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Community_Standards https://safespace.noisebridge.net/ is one way to quickly raise issues which will be seen by people in Slack.

Brief Kudos[edit | edit source]

Recent examples of excellent behavior, say 3, unless the passion moves you.

Elle - to the dozen ppl who helped on the grants. Ppl who reminded us to finish, who read through them, who are working on various other ones in progress, ppl who worked on the one for this week. Julius, Moof, Moon, Wheezy, JD, Ken, etc

Moof - to SuperQ. He's in Berlin and just flew in to set up a server at Noisebridge. All the people maintaining the infrastructure.

Israel - to Julius and Moof, welcoming me to Noisebridge and guiding me

Julius - to Ken for showing me how to work with one of the industrial sewing machines

Andrei - to Elle, who gave me a very warm welcome to NB.

Big C Consensus Items[edit | edit source]

Nobody likes 3 hour meetings, only explain if new people are present. https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Current_Consensus_Items

Consensus Items [edit | edit source]

Only for talking about Big C consensus items, small c consensus items should be discussed with people at the space at the time of the change/new item or can be reserved for the discussion section of the meeting.

Sewing Equipment - spending about $4k on sewing room equipment and supplies

Equipment in Question: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1e0AYfBecatCktmdX1SKm2KpBXIZAYTuEUwy6M1r3kls/edit#gid=0

Mark is not going to block that tonight. He is going to possibly discuss this item with other members.

Elle: donation is offered (small cricket?) useful for cutting leather and fabric with laser. The downside: uses a lot of energy.

TwiceasNice - we do also have a nice vinyl cutter, ppl ought to use it more

Elle: Haven't used a vinyl cutter and will look into it. Crickets do a lot more than vinyl cutter.

Cricket brand machines might have planned obsolescence baked in. Keep that in mind when making a purchasing decision.

Discussion Items[edit | edit source]

It is recommended to post items for discussion ahead of time at https://pad.riseup.net/p/nbmeeting. (Check that the template for the meeting is in place already, and that last week's notes have been moved to the wiki, of course)

Item prompts should follow the format: From/Raised by: [your name here] Seeking [decision/outcome/advice/something else] On topic: [topic]

Discussion Item 0[edit | edit source]

From/Raised by:Twiceasnice Seeking advice On topic: MAPP

Mission Arts Performance Project Held every even month, next one in June

Deadline to apply coming up Event is Saturday June 1st

We need people who want to do performances, do tours of the space and host ppl, etc etc Please chat in the events support channel in discord

Izzy- is there a unifying theme?

Nicole- that would be up to whoever wants to participate

Mark- We have the events forum now, we could create a forum post specifically for this event

Mark- you would ping events support if you have questions necessary to make the event happen

Elle: would it make sense to do a gallery of interesting projects? There are so many cool things people have made!

Nicole- that would be very cool yes.

Nicole- we should apply soon, as well as include things we are doing.

Moof- Is there a day that you are using to have noisebridge people plan

Nicole- one more important thing- I wont be there on the day of, I will be out of town

Izzy- I can show up

Nicole- Just online

Mark - use Discord for voice to negotiate.

Mark- come up with some arbitrary date ti have someone by, if no one volunteers ping me

Nicole - May 2nd Thursday - a MAPP discussion/planning event in the Mission

Discussion Item 1[edit | edit source]

From/Raised by:Moof Seeking consensus On topic: throw away downstairs tables and chairs

Two tables in downstairs hackitorium

Moof - two tables in the downstairs hackitorium can be either disassembled and stored or given away to other s who need them. Or thrown away. Also we have two many chairs.

Izzy: Recology will take away bulky stuff.

Daniel: Make a Craigslist ad.

Mike: Votes for keeping the tables. Put them upstairs. They can be useful for setting up a classroom in the Music room.

Moof: Proposes to stack chairs.

Mike: We should be doing that all the time. The default should be to stack and fold unused chairs under the ladder. Anyone can feel free to do that whenever necessary.

Elle: If we get rid of all the chairs, how will we have larger events (e.g. Rust classes)?

Moof and Mike: We have enough chairs. At least 40 stacked.

Twiceasnice - we can get more chairs from this other company that will donate them

Elle: Can we get folding desks for the sewing room?

(Twiceasnice will look into it)

Discussion Item 2[edit | edit source]

From/Raised by: Moof Seeking advice/consensus On topic: fire safety/ electrical work @ NB

Moof: Believes that the current system is dangerous because extension cords are run haphazardly.

Elle: We have one outlet in the sewing room. Everything runs from it. It's a little scary. Wouldn't call it unsafe. How about doing an electrical audit - enumerate outlets in each room and the equipment that relies on it?

Israel: easy baseline is thinking about accessibility/escape routes If you can tell that a space is not accessible to say, a wheelchair, thats pretty much guaranteed a fire hazard. EZ fix.

Mike: Look out for wire daisy chaining and surge protectors.

Elle: We're trying to reduce flammability in the sewing space. This Saturday we have volunteers coming it to help. If anyone else can come and help do that - please do.

Moof: is the outlet in the sewing room the one that has four plugs?

Elle: yes

Moof: same in music room, just one like that.

Elle: Has a wattage measuring device. You plug it into an outlet and it measures electrical load/wattage.

Brandon/Mark: Current NB space was used for automotive repairs in the past. This suggests that electrical wiring is ok for a large load.

Mark: We need a professional electrician who works with non-profits.

Moof: A cheap surge protector may cause electrical fire.

Daniel: We can get nice surge protectors to mitigate potential hazards, not whatever is donated.

Julius: possibly an issue with higher rated surge protector being a hazard because it takes on more than our outlets are actually rated for? Or something like that? (Paraphrasing)

Daniel: the problem starts when you daisy chain surge protectors. That overloads them.

Moof: Proposes a meeting this Saturday/Sunday morning to discuss this.

Elle: We should invite Ken and ask for his opinion. He has the skills and bg knowledge.

Brandon: will ask around for an electrician to do a walk around.

Moof: Let's meet saturday morning at 12 noon. Ken will come.

Mike: Ok.

Moof: Daniel, Mark, Julius, Ken, Moof, Elle, izzy might show up!

Discussion Item 3[edit | edit source]

From/Raised by: Elle 15th anniversary and a potential for throwing a party. Should start planning soon.

Elle: working on the application for a grant, due on the 12th, from Stellar Foundation to fund our party.

Elle: Folsome street fair, and the leather people

Elle: How about creating a social calendar for NB - street faire, fashion show, etc.

Izzy: the social calendar would be nice to set up with the API-

Moof: Looking into NB website.

Izzy: i have been interested in moving cordination to be more open source- discord and slack are closed source, the social callendar would be a cool thing!

Izzy: what is stellar?

Elle: The Stellar foundation is a cryptocurrency company that wants to give money to educate people on their product.

Moof: What sort of value does Stellar want from us?

Elle: one is for individuals who program in rust, who want to produce essentially apps that use their smart contracts platform. Some of our members are researching that. (wyatt and at least two others). They also offered us the option of doing a community grant, where we would be an educational arm for them.

Elle: We shouldn't be their puppet though. They're willing to give us 50k for organizing classes.

Izzy: I have experience teaching classes on blockchain. If Im comfortable with the situation with stellar, I would be down to help

Elle: If you are around tommorw eventing, I will be here

Julius: is that new clarifying information from them? That they are interested in doing a class for beginners in rust, and then give them a segway?

Elle: It's up to us to tell them what we will do in our grant application. The key is that we don't need to do things that isn't Noisebridge.

Julius will be busy from 6 to 9, Izzy will make it.

Elle: Third grant is from a Noisebridge person. They are currently funding parties for other organizations. We have beginnings of a grant and can talk about it tomorrow with whoever shows up.

Mark: We should do a weekly check-in for organizing the party so that we don't loose steam. A very quick meeting, give people concrete tasks.

Elle: Let's involve different organizations and have different parties.

Mark: There are threads in Discord about this party and Maker Faire projects. Anyone is welcome to chime in and volunteer effort to a project/event you like.

Elle: Maker Faire is a huge maker festival. People from all over the Bay Area come. It's a major investment of time and effort that can pay off by making NB more visible and well-known. If we want to take part, we should start preparing now. Make a single cohesive project and have a lot of fun.

Moof: Folsom street fair is in October.

Mark: Let's focus on MAPP and our 50th anniversary party. We need a few leaders who will take charge of the party.

Elle: I will help them in their effort.

Do-ocratic Task Board[edit | edit source]

Participation also means doing stuff to contribute to the space. Propose new tasks or pick some tasks from Github, from what needs to be done around you, or whatever, and see if someone will sign up to work on that task. Anyone can sign up and it's a great way to show you are contributing!

End of Meeting[edit | edit source]
