What is it?
Every topic (e.g. electronics, painting, linear algebra or carpentry) is composed of numerous simple skills. For instance electronics includes the soldering skill. Everyone at Noisebridge has unique knowledge and can teach specific skills. But how does a newcomer know whom to ask for lessons? The Paths Project helps students find "guides" for individual skills to construct paths through broader learning. It is a bulletin for the guides to post their contact information, pictures, and list of the skills they can teach.
Each skill will have an assessment where students can demonstrate their accomplishment and get added as guides themselves. The process creates a virtuous cycle where guides beget guides.
Benefits for Noisebridge
Financial
Guides are encouraged to charge tuition for teaching each skill, with the revenue going to Noisebridge itself. This way we're all working toward making the space better and strengthening the paths project. Students can substitute volunteer hours on building/equipment maintenance if a monetary donation is prohibitive. This diversifies our income from monthly dues and general donations.
Membership Growth
A specific list of bite-sized skills provides a compelling reason to visit and an advertisement of our abilities. I imagine the space emerging as a new kind of school and attracting a broader crowd.
Excellence
The skills paths create cumulative and combinatorial interaction and growth between members. A topic full of specific skills helps people learn more thoroughly than does a smattering of introductory classes. The student skill level is better known and classes are focused on teaching well defined outcomes. Also would-be guides can spot and fill gaps in the currently offered skills.
