Congrats, you're a member. With that you are granted 24 hour token access to Noisebridge.

How did I become a Member?

The Membership page explains this process best.

How does 24 hour token access work?

Generally, people can get into Noisebridge without any token access during the open hours of 11 AM to 10 PM. Some excellent users have been specifically granted daytime token access during the hours of 11 AM to 10 PM. Members have 24-hour token access. Noisebridge Philanthropists get 24-hour token access without the status of being a Member.

Noisebridge has an RFID-based access control system. After you've been accepted for 24-hour access, you provide the Secretary with a suitable RFID token (i.e. your Clipper card) or receive one from Noisebridge for a $5 donation. The Secretary will then add your token along with your contact information into the access list giving you 24-hour access.

You can use this RFID token to open both the lower gate and the upper door. Opening the lower gate requires swiping your token in front of the black square panel of the payphone, while opening the upper door requires swiping on the red box to the right of the door.

Your email address will get added to a private announce list specifically for communicating to token holders (like if a dog accidentally eats the token reader machine). Additionally the Secretary or Treasurer might email you directly.

The reoccurring donation is a monetary donation. If your access is revoked, the donation for that month or previous months are not refunded. Just because you're donating a certain amount does not make you any more or less a valid person to be at Noisebridge.

What are my responsibilities of having 24 hour token access?

To maintain your access we require you to understand and follow these responsibilities.

As always we ask you to be excellent by following our Anti-Harassment Policy and Community Standards.

If you're found to be unexcellent, regardless of what your status is with the space you can always be asked to leave at anytime. This could happen with follow up action at the following Tuesday meeting.

During our general hours of 11 AM - 10 PM we ask that you be friendly and positive to those who don't have access who want to get inside.

While in the space, if someone rings the door bell to the gate you can open it for them by tagging your token to the reader on the inside of the door. Please remember to greet them as they come in, get their name, ask them what brings them to Noisebridge today, and be helpful if you can. You are under no obligation to let anyone in, however you are completely responsible for whoever you let in!

During our after hours (10 PM - 11 AM), use your best judgment to decide who you allow into the space. Anyone you do bring into the space, guest or people you've just met, are your responsibility. If you feel someone is being unexcellent at any time, you are obligated to bring this concern to their attention, and should it not be resolved kindly ask them to leave.

At 10 PM and after, if you're the last person with 24 hour access leaving the space, please ask everyone to finish up hacking and leave the space with you. If someone doesn't want to leave, please inform them after 10 PM non-24 hour users are not allowed to remain in the space after the last 24 hour access token holder leaves, and that they need to leave with you. If this is a problem for them and they don't want to leave, please contact (415) 413-0205 so that we can raise and alarm and potentially get some more Members over to you to help close the space. We've been operating this people-need-to-leave-after-10pm model since the Noisebridge Reboot and shouldn't be news to anyone.

When leaving the space be sure the following are locked:

  • The gate leading to the elevator room
  • The lock at the bottom corner of the window leading to the fire escape
  • The main door into the space at the top of the space
  • All windows shut

Granting a monthly day pass

Members with 24 hour access may promote a normal hacker who they find to be excellent, to have day time access (from the hours of 11 AM to 10 PM) for 30 days. Members are strongly encourage to use the best judgment when giving this access to others.

When handing out this access please provide the following advice to the receiver:

  • $2 donation to provision a re-existing RFID/Clipper card, $5 to grab one of the blue tokens from the drawers next to the RFID pin pad.
  • Day access is a privilege and can be revoked at any point in time.
  • If access over night is wanted, consider supporting the space by becoming a Noisebridge Philanthropist or Member.
  • Anyone with day access is responsible for who they bring into the space, either as guests or people they let in through the door.
  • To remotely buzz the gate downstairs, tag your RFID token on the pinpad next to the main entrance after the doorbell has been rung.
  • Please be friendly and greet anyone you let into the space.
  • 30 day access can be renewed through any Member.
  • Be Excellent.

Members can provision this access by tagging their own token onto the pinpad next to the entrance, then reading the instructions on the screen.

Day pass holders may check the status of their day pass by tagging the pinpad next to the entrance.

What do I not get through being a Member with 24 hour access?

At no point does being a Member nor having 24 hour token access grant you the ability to sleep at Noisebridge, "sleep hack" or nap in the space over night. This is a legal requirement set forth on anyone entering our space and violators will not be tolerated. Average hacker, Philanthropist, or Member, hacking belongs at Noisebridge and sleeping belongs at home.

How could I lose my Membership based 24 hour token access?

  • Through consensus.
  • Through not paying your dues.
  • Going on hiatus.
  • Rescinding your membership.
