This page is for organizing ideas around how we at Noisebridge can do cool projects that involve streaming video, audio, photography, etc. in ways that are consistent with our desire to respect people's need for privacy while at Noisebridge.

We're having lots of discussions in #streams-and-privacy on Slack, if Slack is your thing.

Augur's Personal Principles and Questions[edit]

These are just some things that I try to think about wrt solving this problem, especially when thinking about particular proposals. They may be useful for you, maybe not.

1. What sort of consent is involved? Consent through passive absence of a "No"? Affirmative "Yes you may film me" consent?

2. How much revocation or withdrawal of consent is possible?

3. Where is the burden or effort placed? Is it on the person who wants to film, or on the person who wants to remain unfilmed?

4. What are the failure modes?

5. How obvious is it that recording is happening?

6. Are there existing interpretations of excellence wrt, eg, ask to leave norms, the existing in-space photography norms, etc. that are relevant and can be rephrased or merely redeployed here?

7. Are there pre-existing cases of recording or streaming that we can use as reference points?

8. Norms about announcements before events, etc.

Considerations[edit]

Space for larger discussions is useful. Being able to fit enough people around a table in frame is important.

Being able to have people overhear conversations and pop in to participate easily is cool and makes for a good dynamic.

Proposals[edit]

1. Clearly demarcated areas that are known to be recorded, or likely to be recorded

2. Signage saying "Now Streaming" that can be used to turn a space into a recording area

3. A list of places or devices that are likely to be recording

4. Opt-in to have your face blurred by a computer vision system that pre-processes video

5. Opt-in to have your face NOT blurred by a computer vision system that pre-processes video

6. Mechanism for anyone to immediately cut off a stream at any moment

7. Audience participation app for big events so people don't have to be recorded to ask questions, etc.
