Basics[edit | edit source]
Trash, recycle, & compost bins go out on Monday night & Thursday night (for pickup early Tuesday morning & Friday morning). For the particulars of sorting, our waste services provider is https://www.recology.com/recology-san-francisco/, Sunset Scavenger in particular (not Golden Gate).
Recology wants recycling unbagged, or at least in clear plastic bags. For us to easily distinguish with trash, or compost, let's keep trash in black or white bags, instead of clear bags.
Emptying Indoor Bins[edit | edit source]
Upstairs[edit | edit source]
There are 2 sets of recycle trash bin pairs.
- In the front, currently near sewing room, in the library hallway.
- In the back hallway-kitchen-bathroom area.
Don't forget the bathroom, you can drop bags from the bathroom into the larger trash bag before taking it out.
Downstairs[edit | edit source]
We have bins
- In front, by entrance to 3D printing room.
- In hackitorium, east closest to front entrance, near laser, supply shelves, and sewing and knitting equipment.
- Laser scraps
- Woodshop scraps
As well as the bathroom.
Bathrooms[edit | edit source]
We have bins in the bathrooms, upstairs and downstairs. Speak up if we need larger bins.
Special cases[edit | edit source]
Laser scraps[edit | edit source]
Laser scraps should not go in trash bins conveniently close by, nor first in the outdoor rolling bins. For small bags, they cause rips and overfill small bags. In the large bin, laser scraps form nests of spars that prevent the rest of trash from fitting in the bins. We should have a separate bin available for laser scraps, and those placing laser scraps in outdoor bins should take care to ensure other trash can easily and conveniently fit in the bins.
Woodshop scraps[edit | edit source]
Woodshop scraps frequently break bags. We can make separate dump runs for scraps if need be, but it's critical that use of the woodshop by a few doesn't prevent us from taking out trash for the rest of the space. A separate indoor bin should be available. Bins with a lid, but without an inner bin, are difficult to empty and frequently rip trash bags. Rips in bags occur due to scraps taking up wider space inside the bin, and getting caught on the lip overhang at the top.
Plans[edit | edit source]
- Supplies: We have more of the big bags, the last roll of them were stored over by the woodshop can. We'll need more big ones soon, I'll get some from Costco.
- Hack some labelled dispensers: I'd like to make/ have labelled drawers (maybe 3" wide, 4-8" tall, 12-18" deep) with distinctive colors, for 13 / ? / ? / 55 gallon bags.
- Signage: We need new trash signage. Consistent color-coded symbols for trash, recycle, (compost). We can pre-cut (~ 3in x 11in maybe, 1/3s of letter paper). Thinking of making a trash wiki page to track the sizes + locations of cans we have, to plan better.
- Liner-bins: Some of the indoors cans need plastic bins inside them. As it stands now, bags rip & tear as they're coming out of metal bins with sleeves and lids, but without plastic bins inside. In short: metal bin w/ lid + plastic inner bin + plastic bag is winning combo. metal bin + plastic bag causes more trouble
Information needed[edit | edit source]
Do we have our expected cans? Unclear if other people have made plans.
