Can we disassemble the sleep space

The sleep cave destroyed a lot of community feelings and badly set Noisebridge back. I think the conflict it caused, the augmentation of hopelessness that it pushed is a major reason that the cleanup had such low turn out out. Can we now disassemble the sleep space?? Even good people sometimes make bad choices. Friends help them.

Hi Greg. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Here is a link to an essay with guidelines fpr postulating causal (rather than casual) correlation -> http://norvig.com/experiment-design.html ... And, another interesting essay in the same vein here -> http://norvig.com/prayer.html

Thanks for the link. Good stuff, some of which I'm aware of. But I not trying to cloth my perception of the reason the turnout at the cleanup was low with a veneer of scientific backing, Its just what I think, largely from my own cognitive experience of the events, and a small amount of sample of convenience.

Previously posted thoughts

was at NB for some of NYE. The official meeting was very short. The IRC link was tried, and it seemed to work better than I'd have thought, showing it is good to keep an open mind and try things out.

Im not feeling good with the "Fort" that J.C. is building at the front of the NB. Several reasons, but I could "keep an open mind" for a week. I didn't like that

  • he didn't talk to people ahead of time,
  • he used a legitimate reason for a temp changes, "chaos 30c3" and then slid in behind it a perm.
  • that if a reason for his project exists, I don't understand any reason why it has to be in "primo" real estate
  • It looks exclusionary, and as if privatizing space.
  • The philosophy sounds elitist, " we are the elite, I'm captain kirk on the bridge of the enterprise.
  • I use the space in the morning, and when there are too much sleeper, and night time people who leave there stuff out, NB becomes uninviting in the am

After becoming a member.

December 18 At the space little before 7 am. At least two people sleeping here. Lots of dirty dishes, one group of dishes appear to be left by XXX and friends. The space is not inviting this morning. May go to a traditional coffee.

December 16 I briefly stopped in the space, with the intention of seeing the possibility of a food hacking session, e.g. make community through food, and holiday cheer, and seeing what was happening in the new "help desk" hour. Had problems with the kitchen area. I could not get either of the stoves to turn on, and I did not understand the process of an induction stovetop. The stovetop does seem to be working, but I couldn't get the oven to. - I wanted to use the Tuesday meeting as a platform to announce and recruit. Worried that a "window of opportunity may pass."

December 15

There are too many mice in the space. Something should be done, but I wonder if the solutions are "do-arcracy" or are more the type of things that should have a buy-in from the community, and thus be addressed with consensus.

December 9

Yes. Got my code to open the door. Thank you. I feel more like a "member."

I should keep notes.

So on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 I tried to get someone to help or tell me how to get an access code, now that I am for sure a member.

To groups and to individuals, I asked about 10 people. The was a general professions of: don't know how, we are too busy. write a note to the discussion list.

Sleeper Thoughts

Someone sleeping in the DJ booth. No one sleeping on the couch. Gregorydillon (talk) 14:38, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

About 6:20 am. "lobster" was sleeping on the coach in the main section. HVisibly that is not helpful to the space. I asked him who is sponsoring him. He said Jake, but that jake is not here. Then said JC. JC was also sleeping here in his own space and confirmed that he is sponsoring lobster to sleep on the coach. Joseph and Jayc are here. When I spoke up to lobster, some other younger women laughed at me trying to bring order to the place.

Hi January 15, 2014

Arrived early. Three people openly sleeping: two on the coaches at the entrance, one in the library. All recognizable as members or regulars. UPDATE - a second consensus member sleeping here. so that makes 4

I'm making my coffee, and looking at System Administration Class, examples.

December 28, 2013

Couple weeks of summarized observations. I've come in early to the space about 4 times and I've seen some more people sleeping here. I haven't woken any of them up. I'm not comfortable with dealing with the expected confrontation, especially when I believe the person is sleeping off a drug or alcohol binge and rather won't listen.

I don't want to get judgmental, and I'm also thinking that sometimes a ban is too harsh for the event. More like, if someone has slept there, they shouldn't be in the overnight hours for about 3 months.

Also, dealing with this at Tuesday meetings takes too long. For two recent sleepers 40 minutes one week 20 minutes another => 1 hour times ~ 20 people at the meeting =. 20 person hour * some value.

December 13, 2013 Was at NB at about 8:20. Don't think there were any sleepers.

December 12, 2013 Was at NB early, "7:30 am" partly with intention to take inventory if there were sleepers. I did not see any. And was surprised in a good way how much "good activity" was happening early in the morning. Also, normal, around the water cooler talk among strong players.

Some rather random notes:

Saturday, I was in the space early, well 11:00 am on a Saturday, for the cleanup event.

At the time, there were two people asleep in the Church Classroom, One guy who probably had just wokenup.

My thoughts are still evolving about what is the best way to deal with people using Noisebridge as a shelter.

It does have a cost for inconveniencing other people using the space

Observe first. I want to get my ideas together, before doing something the "wrong" way

Disinclined to call this a police emergency. Its been happening a long time, so it is not an "emergency" And people sleeping is not an "emergency" but maybe it is a non-emergency police matter. Or maybe not even. .... And should be dealt with by access controls and Tuesday meetings. Ponder, ponder, talk about this.

I didn't want to be the one to confront the sleepers.

Draft Proposed Consensus Item -v0.2 Please feel free to comment -

When a person is found sleeping at Noisebridge, the community should consider if there are sufficient mitigating circumstance or gray areas --e.g power naps, special extenuating circumstances, etc. -- so that a sanction other than banning should be permitted.

The problems related with sleeping at Noisebridge are not easily solved but it would be helpful sanctions other than banning at Noisebridge that recognizes gray areas, mitigating circumstances and allows for sanctions other than banning.

Saturday Afternoon Cleanup Review

I participated in the Saturday afternoon cleanup again. My third in a row. Attendance / participation was sparse, but these event make a difference in how the place looks.

Al's floor cleaning machine is awesome. Monad did a lot of work. Monad really worked hard for a lot of hours I didn't. I felt, I'm going to do my part and some extra so I worked about an hour plus, but vendajo

Sleeping at Noisebridge

Gregorydillon (talk) 17:36, 31 January 2014 (UTC) got in late this morning. Didn't see anyone asleep, but three people who regularly sleep at NB, here in the early.

Gregorydillon (talk) 14:39, 30 January 2014 (UTC) Got in about 6:15. Two people sleeping in the Library. Both are repeat sleepers. (One is same guy as yesterday "wake up with coffee, wears a beanie." and (?a??)

Gregorydillon (talk) 14:38, 29 January 2014 (UTC) Got in just about 6:15. One guy sleeping in the library where I like to drink my coffee. I offered him a cup of coffee. he declined, and after a few went to the restroom, and then I believe a different space to finish his sleep. All in all, rather chill.

Got in just just before six. The place looked great. The floor is clean, the kitchen is clean. The space was quiet.

There were at least two people sleeping. One in the DJ booth, and one in chairs in Church.Gregorydillon (talk) 14:07, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Better than Starbuck - Was Glorified Starbucks

Gregorydillon (talk) 17:53, 1 February 2014 (UTC) Got here at weekend hours, about 9:30. I'm working hard on doing a bash script, so I was here late last night, and kinda early this morning. Gonna do a count, but seems like 6 sleeper were here over night, but are awake now. Too much non hacker noise, coming from them with words like, fucking, shit, hella, louder laughs then necessary. I made a pot of coffee, but if this keeps up, I'm moving on this morning.

Gregorydillon (talk) 17:34, 31 January 2014 (UTC)Joseph had coffee made when I got in this morning. It was good.' Gregorydillon (talk) 14:42, 30 January 2014 (UTC) The kitchen sink is rather backed up with dirty dishes, considerable uneaten food left on counter an uncleaned crumbs..

My wiki talk page got out of order. Trying to restore it. Gregorydillon (talk) 14:41, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

I came late. Say 7:10. Joseph made coffee and offered me some. Nice. Gregorydillon (talk) 15:49, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Thankyou, whoever brought the coffee filters. 199.241.200.45 15:32, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Nice, Monoad came in early this morning. Nice to see someone solid in the morning. I believe there are 6 people here none of whom are members or associates.

Sashy was sleeping on the coach in the front room. Turning on the lights woke her up. I asked her if a member was sponsoring her. She said she has been a member for three years. But she didn't know her name on the on membership rolls. Another guy who had been sleeping on the other front coach, said that he doesn't have a sponsor, but that he has been vetted and told that it was okay by someone who I 90% sure is. (***R***). Then Sara is sleeping in J.C.'s space. Two people awake in the back who I recognize, one that I don't recognize. - Not a real Starbucks. Gregorydillon (talk) 15:36, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

The guy who has vetted by (***R***) is rambling on nearly incoherently. Makes the space creepy.

Gregorydillon (talk) 14:39, 23 January 2014 (UTC) Made a pot of coffee. Opened some windows, place smells of a decaying mouse. It is quiet.

January 21, 2014 When I talk to people about this, Ive gotten links that it won't work

January 17, 2014 Actual Starbucks. The gate was locked, and keycode did not work.

January 16, 2014 Nice. Very nice. In by 6. am One very polite guy using multimeters and soldering. All the dishes have been done. No one is openly sleeping here. Very nice. I think the same coffee taste better than normal.

January 14, 2014 I was in the space before 6 am this morning. I made a smaller pot of coffee, and ended up drinking it myself. Today, I liked it the noisebridge space at the early hour. I put on some Mozart, softly. I worked on a course that I'm looking at with the beginning of a new semester at CCSF. - enuf on that for now.

Again the Kitchen is a mess, with the sink filled with plates, cutting boards with messes on them. General disorder.

January 13, 2014 Late for Coding Class Starbucks. Got here about 8:10 am. But the environment is not work friendly. The music is wrong, with wrong words, and it more feels like its driven by someone up all night, than music for people waking up. Also the Coffee maker area is a mess, and the kitchen is a mess. I made a pot of coffee and offered some. I didn't cleanup the other people's mess.

I'm studying by video watching CS50. the Harvard extension programming class. But. as is for I would not attach my name to hosting a morning study meetup at noisebridge, even that there are 15 people looking for a meetup space on meetup.com

January 11, 2014 I came in about 7:45 on Saturday with the plan to make a pot of coffee. But disappointed. Yesterday there were like +10 coffee filters left. Today there were zero. What happened? I like to start my morning with coffee.

January 10, 2014 I'm feeling the space would be better if there was more activity in the morning. I've been making a pot of coffee, well twice now. I was thinking about doing some morning cousera coding glorified coffee starbucks haha. What it would be is making a pot(s) of coffee between say 7:15 and 8:45, and putting coursera coding classes on a the collaborationstation in Turing, and a clean table between the kitchen and Turing. One room with a scheduled video coding classes, and an outside area for either small group, or just coding. What do you think? Would you go? Would you cooperate, and take the lead role on certain days? I'm just thinking, but not committed yet."

Potentential Consensus Item - Your thoughts are invited - The names of those who block has to be included on the wiki history page

I have a proposed consensus item that I'm mulling.

That when a consensus item is blocked by <=2, their names have to be included on the wiki history page.

Rational - Makes it easy to see if someone is a habitual blocker, and facilitate communication to resolve.

And - more playfully, if someone blocks more than twice in a four week period, they have to put out the garbage, and clean the kitchen and bathrooms for a month. haha Show their contribution. Just kidding, but like many jokes with a hint or
