i think john is right. i was talking to some guys from fujitsu a the QS 
conference about pulse monitoring; the tech is literally just an LED and a 
photodiode and can be measured multiple places, not just the fingertip. i 
think not being able to bend your finger will get annoying, and the 
CMS-50E will slip off unless it is taped on. because of these problems, 
the fujitsu guy had built a plastic ring that held the photodiode and LED, 
with a flat flex cable running to the TI EZ430 watch demo platform, which 
is ~$40 and has a wireless USB connection and various other sensors built 
in as well.
