[Tastebridge] cooler for a brewing mash tun?

David - excellent move!  Borrowing things is way better than the usual choices of reduce/reuse/recycle, especially when the embedded energy of the thing is as high as it is for copper tubing (so there would be the pricey "re-smelt" step too, after recycling).

In our communal garage I found an abandoned cooler (a Coleman "PolyLite 40" - so 40 quarts) in fine clean condition, that is another candidate for re-purposing, as a mash tun.  It does not have a drain hole, but I have usually used a siphon method to pull off the wort when the mash is done anyway - or a hole can be drilled like is shown in this video (there are dozens of other ones nearby, or search anew on "mash tun cooler"):

Unfortunately, I may not be able to easily get it to NB this next 1-2 weeks (from Berkeley), but we can figure it out if/when it is needed.  It may sound clumsy to have a bulky cooler kicking around, but you can use it in between batches to store tons of brewing gear so actually the shelf space is utilized pretty efficiently.

Charlie

Hey,

My friend Monica let us borrow her wort chiller.
I just have to go to a hardware store and get the fittings to hook it up to
the kitchen sink.

Yeah the steeping container was going to be the next project.
Thanks for the link.

Cheers,

David
