About Art Span & SF Open Studios (SFOS)[edit | edit source]
ArtSpan is a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization that connects local artists with the community and promotes the city's art scene. ArtSpan's main event is San Francisco Open Studios (SFOS), which is the oldest and largest artist open studios event in the United States. It started in 1975 and has been running annually since then. In 2024, SFOS is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The event will run from September 19 to October 13, 2024. For the 50th anniversary, there will be a special exhibition titled "From Disco Days to the Tech Craze: 50 Years of ArtSpan SF Open Studios" at the San Francisco Public Library. SFOS allows the public to visit artists' creative spaces, see their work, and purchase art directly from creators. It's free to attend. ArtSpan produces an annual SF Open Studios Guide, which includes information about participating artists, galleries, and cultural institutions in San Francisco.
The organization also runs other programs like Art-In-Neighborhoods (AIN), which creates opportunities for artists to showcase their work in unconventional locations throughout the city. ArtSpan hosts events throughout the year, including an opening party called ArtLaunch and presents AMPLIFY: Juror's Choice Awards to recognize outstanding artists. As of 2023, over 600 local artists participated in SF Open Studios, showing the significant growth of the event since its inception with 67 artists in 1975. ArtSpan aims to keep San Francisco's art scene vibrant and unique, supporting both established and emerging artists in the Bay Area.
