Hardware Hacking & Repair
I am leading an open-ended hardware hacking / repair class teaching the basics of repairing things like:
- flat screen TVs / monitors
- headphones / headphone cables
- ATX power supply / general power supply repair
- battery care (and reviving "dead" li-ion packs")
- basics of laptop repair
 When is the class?
Monday, August 11 at 6:00 PM. The class will go until 8pm.
Where is the class being taught?
The gate to the space should be open while the class is in session. If not, you can read up on getting into the space by clicking here.
The Turing Classroom is the smaller room next to the wood shop. Feel free to ask around and there will be a sign posted as well.
What do I need to know?
The class is more focused on an intermediate level for those that already know how to solder. Everyone is welcome though, and there will be a class on how to solder in the other room. It would be nice if people are familiar with the basic parts like resistors, capacitors, etc. but I will go over some of this in basic detail.
I will also keep it open for suggestions so people can pick my brain as to things I've repaired over my 10+ years doing this stuff.
I will bring some monitors, power supplies, laptops, and cables to hack. The class format will be as follows:
2- Quick Basic Soldering / Basic Tools Overview (See Circuit Hacking Mondays for more)
3- Basics on Wire & Cable Repair with focus on Headphones, power cables, etc.
4- Batteries: "Get The Most Out of A Charge" - Maintenance & Repair
5- Basic Laptop Repair: Diagnosing Errors and Hardware Issues. How to properly take apart, replace RAM, HDs, etc.
6- Power Supplies: How They Work, Where They Go Wrong. Primary / Secondary voltages, Transformers, FETs, etc.
7- Application of Power Supply knowledge for Monitor / Flat Screen repairs
This format is flexible and can change depending on participant interest.
How much does this class cost?
This class is free, as are all classes taught at Noisebridge. A donation of around $5 is appreciated toward the cost of the components that I am bringing to the class, but no one will be turned away.
If you feel the class was beneficial, we'd really appreciate a donation to Noisebridge to fund our ongoing renovation and lasting presence in the city.
