Short announcements and events[edit | edit source]

60-second description per item in bulletpoint. Tyler: I'm coming to town next week, gonna be here for 2 weeks, wants to help rebuild the game area. got initial measurements and setups and such. needs terrific volunteers!

5mof this thursday hack comedy @ 8pm saturday, tickets on eventbrite

Dave: a few weeks ago we had talked about building a purge bin, we've changed it to a purge shelf. if you want to get rid of stuff, put it on the purge shelf. (near the hackatorium table). if people want to use stuff on the purge shelf they can use it also.

Liz: 5:30 tour of the wiki on wednesday. looking for any kind of RSVP on slack or discuss. wiki editing + become a wiki admin!

  • pyconaut- gamebridge is still happening every Wednesday at 8pm on Gamebridge discord.

Excellence[edit | edit source]

Our One Rule is to Be Excellent to Each Other.

(What does that mean? How does the Anti-Harassment Policy fit into this? Are we SURE we know what being Excellent is? This is an important and fundamental conversation at Noisebridge, so let's give it like 120 seconds.)

Mentar was chosen with the magic wheel This is the only rule in the hackspace basically means thinking about others as well as just yourself trying to be constructive as much as possible, empathy, thinking about other person's view of how this interaction might go.

dave wants to add to excellence someone came by (not going to name) and volunteered their time to clean the bathrooms. which was super awesome (dont you mean excellent) And also bought the supplies!!!

Participation[edit | edit source]

Everyone at Noisebridge is a participant at Noisebridge.

(What does that mean? How do you get a door key? Access to Slack, Discuss, etc?)

participation is key Steve: while there are a number of levels of philanthropy/membership, in general you don't have to do anything or pay anything to be at noisebridge. just by walking in and following the one rule you are a 99% member of the space. you can do whatever you want more or less. there's also remote participation, like the jitsi in this meeting as well as slack/discuss/discord

Philanthropists[edit | edit source]

A Philanthropist at Noisebridge has earned enough trust from the community to open and close the space.

(What does that mean? What do we expect from Philanthropists? How do you become one? etc)

Lizzard: to be a philanthropist, be a steward, know how to open and close the space, how to give a tour, how the access works, be responsible and contribute and look out for noisebridge

philanthropy applicant: Dane wanna support noisebridge on a monetary level, organize the zines, help out with events, see more events in hackerspaces, more on the east bay side of things but sometimes he'll be here in SF and would like to help contribute whatever he can (physically socially mentally) to the space. wants to do more work with zines, open source, free source, etc.

philanthropy is not a week or two week process

we need a sponsor for dane, but no one is volunteering and he needs a sponsor. carl would be willing to sponsor dane but he thinks he's not a member because of dues liz is now sponsoring dane on the strength of carl's recommendation liz wants him to set up a recurring donation and kick up his philanthropy. he'll bring it in club mate form and dump it on everyone (*everyone cheered*)

ruth is now applying for philanthropy? but maybe she's already a member? confusing stuff... Ruth is sponsored by Tyler how will ruth give money to noisebridge? tyler says it is already done

Dane and Ruth are now philanthropists! Hurrah!

Membership Binder [edit | edit source]

Membership in Noisebridge entails community Trust in Consensus.

(What does that mean? What do we expect from Members? How do you become a Member? etc)

relay is trying to become a member

  • contributions: too many to count... liz your saying it to fast!!!

sponsor 1: lizzard (green) sponsor 2: tj

Financial Report[edit | edit source]

Anarchist societies under a capitalist state need money to survive and thrive, yo.

finanical report:

Shall we sell a bitcoin??? (it's at 44K today, yesterday it was at 47K we still have the stupid hackathon money (??) it would be cool to do a stupid hackathon eventually

304k cash, 143k btc == $448k

we r paying back trent who bought the table saw a while ago... he waS BUYING It under the impresssion he was going to be paid back but he wasn't. he was an upstanding member of noisebridge so reasonable to return his money. ~ 900 bucks

we agreed to pay the saferdiy invoice $2200

a bill that we are paying that will come back to us we were somehow still on the hook for the 2169 power bill, it was 0 for a while so didnt matter, we randomly got a $2k power bill, landlord is sending us a $2k check to make it even, sorted out with power company.

Fundraising Update[edit | edit source]

How's it all going

we're doing an event, we have tickets for hack comedy

ruth is leaving... tfw

Consensus[edit | edit source]

Consensus is how the Noisebridge Membership may change how Noisebridge works.

(How does Consensus work? What types of things are good for formal Consensus? What is small-c consensus? What is a "block"?)

no consensus items from last week. doesn't look like there are any this week

Proposals from last week [edit | edit source]

(Add any items which are consensed upon or someone has raised a principle objection for to the Consensus Items History page.)

Proposals for next week [edit | edit source]

(Add any new items for consensus to the Current Consensus Items page.)

Discussion[edit | edit source]

Discussion Item 1 electrical work[edit | edit source]

  • mark where we want electrical outlets or other work for electrician
  • please mark it! (discussion item for next week)
  • Maybe before meeting next week we can

Discussion Item 2 ventilation, better fans, and air cleaners including the skylights.[edit | edit source]

  • X: we have air movers front and back that have two speeds: high and higher
  • Dan:
summary: wanna do something quickly, i've done a bit and it's better than what it was but it needs to be even better. i think we need air cleaners.

  • liz: serious HEPA filters?
  • x: give us a summary of what's been done
  • dan: upstairs is where it started, with the windows above the back staircase. cheap box fans, but there's four of them. ~3000 cubic feet per minute. upstairs volume is ~25000-30000 cubic feet. (8 foot ceilings) This is OK, but not great. Caution tape indicators, and it... kinda worked? kinda clears the air out? pulls air up the stairs which isn't awesome. Another fan in the hallway? Don't see all the caution tape wiggling like i'd like it to. The closed rooms could definitely also use fans and air cleaners. electronics is really hot sometimes too. skylights rae great. need to pull air up and out. fans downstairs raisese the bar for what's possible upstairs. downstairs is almost OK, but the air is not getting all the way out the back. It gets out of the main space, but not all the way. Personally can't be confident to do too much more. This is what i've done with a ton of help. but if we agree it's important, let's spend some money on it. Better more perfect solutions exist, but it's important to do this ASAP.

X: with everything open there's a decent amount of airflow. all of it can be improved and upgraded. downstairs we added the air movers downstairs, about $200 for the downstairs movers and $100 for the upstairs boxes.

  • Air quality sensor looking ok? should we get (or make) a nicer one?

Liz: hepa filters might be good, but they're expensive. we have a lot of space, might be in general expensive. HVAC consultant? Skylights expensive and breakable!!!! warning roof leaks

  • sophia - make skylights openable?
  • Dave: thanks for the hard work dan. my thoughts: i am also in favor of making the skylights operational. for covid as well as comfort reasons. 2: i'm not really concerned about power usage. running the fans when people are in the space is negligible for power. opposed to dumping tons of money on hepa filters. we can fundraise for that if it's really important. but i don't see the value. no equivalent organizations that have had to do that.
  • Dan: dont wanna take too much time. lets consider the discussion later.i dont see anything more important to do right now. would like to check in with people who feel otherwise and see their opinions. talk more about air cleaners: it's a recommendation for schools in terms of equivalent institutions.

Discussion Item 3 state of union for noisebridge[edit | edit source]

  • Dave: try to make this quick

basically: lets taker a moment to refrect on the health of noisebridge. pre-delta we got a lot of organic growth, things were going great in general. since delta activity has dropped off immensely. there was a thursday with just three people. i'm worried about this. i'd like to get people's opinions. don't have recommendations or solutions

  • fine line (more like thick line imo): noticed that too. not convinced it's entirely due to delta (though definitely partially). Partially due to interest we've built since we've reopened has come in waves. We have waves of interest and get a couple longer-term people from that each time. some is due to SF as a whole not revitalizing, so there's less tech workers around etc. not really anything we can do about delta. we have peaked case-wise. we might plateau, we might go down, but no one really knows
  • sophia: hosting fridays and the meeting. A few were lonely, like sophia, mike and one other person. more recently maybe 6 people. stayed till 1am. and a bunch of people who just came in. it was solid.
  • lizzard: just wanna suggest, if you hold the space open, try to promote that the space is open. events are going to help us quite a lot. make it clear to people at the events that they can come back. it'll be a slow trajectory but we will hit critical mass and it will take off from there
  • X:thank you all. it's been great that there are any events. many months where no one can do anything. seeing things happen consistently more than once a week is great. saturday buildouts is great. it's slow. we go forwards, sometimes we go backwards, but hopefully overall we have progress. there's 15 people in the space RN. quite a few! We are at 100% capacity, vibing etc. Quite a few people virtually as well. Not as many as we've ever had but lots of challenges. x is on their way out when there are more than 20 people. but the ceiling is 49 people (fire reasons)?

Space use[edit | edit source]

  • recap of last week. we talked about this last week

liz: just glancing at the notes. how to recap last week. storage of personal or aspirational hacking items at the space. you and i x are in conflict. a lot of peopele are concerned about what should be here and what should go. discussion on any channel is fine. in person is fine, at meetings is fine.

tj: wolf, who can't come to tusedays but has been here for saturdays. put a qr code in the space that linked to places in the wiki. once he was done doing that he posted to a public channel saying that he did this. Communicating plans in public

X: thanks for the feedback x: there's things between you (liz) and i that are difficult to work out. some of this has to do directly with me. we're both representing various interests. i have a lot of interests. there's at least as many people not me who have participated in the space with me on me getting to here. a few of these things are personal projecst. but for 6+ months, the only thing i did was work on the space. this was with a few people that were here, a lot of people who went in and out. i want to do wiki documentation + video documentation. we've been talking about this some recently, but we can talk about it more in the future. let's talk about this for a few more and then talk in other contexts.

liz: thanks for participating in this discussion

dave: we don't have to figure this out today. when you come back it's fine to talk then. as an action item: trying to reduce the amount of projects and stuff in the space to have a schedule or something. you have 2 or 3 weeks on the scale or whatever. that would be good to do.

some suggestions

  • Keep hack shelves unblocked, clear corridors
  • Can we move the fridge to the back under the stairs (it is bulky and noisy)

Discussion Item 5 compensation for victor[edit | edit source]

  • TJ has one minute

he says: from what i understand, victor is doing a lot of the advertising for hack comedy out of pocket. i appreciate how he's doing that so nb can make money. maybe it would be good to at least partly compensate him for this advertising. (taken out of ticket sales?)

Big question: how much money would we make from tickets, how much money would we spend on advertising etc.

End of Meeting[edit | edit source]

Note taker posts the notes[edit | edit source]

  • Clean and tidy the meeting notes including removing all these really verbose instructions.
  • Fill out the short summary at the top listing just announcements, consensus items, discussion topics, and names of new members and philanthropists.
  • Copy paste the notes to the next meeting page. (They will become Last meeting at midnight.)
  • Email the meeting summary to Noisebridge Discuss and Noisebridge Announce lists.
  • CC on the email treasurer@noisebridge.net and secretary@noisebridge.net if there are new members and philanthropists.
  • Edit the Current Consensus Items if anything is proposed for consensus next week.
  • Edit the Consensus Items History if anything was reached consensus or failed to reach consensus this week.

Fun things to do after[edit | edit source]

  • Reprise of the Hackernationale. [This is anarchy - we do what the wiki says!]
  • PGP Key Signing could happen now (if it doesn't happen before any given Meeting). Ask others around the space or check the list to see who wants in on the action.
