Excellence[edit | edit source]
Our One Rule is to Be Excellent to Each Other.
(What does that mean? How does the Anti-Harassment Policy fit into this? Are we SURE we know what being Excellent is? This is an important and fundamental conversation at Noisebridge, so let's give it like 120 seconds.)
TBD
Alex -
Elan -
TJ: We should continue the Commendation of Excellence!
TJ: Elan for stepping up and helping with the wiki.
Pyconaut- commend the the team that installed the phone at ther front gate Paul+Ryan+et all
Participation[edit | edit source]
Everyone at Noisebridge is a participant at Noisebridge.
(What does that mean? How do you get a door key? Access to Slack, Discuss, etc?)
Ryan: Participation is giving back to the Community/teaching class/ cleaning up/organization/hacking on a project with other people
Discuss is a community forum
Slack is broken down into more granular topics, also general chat.
Getting a door key, if you've been around and shown yourself to not be a terrible person you can get sponsorship by a "Member". This way you can get 30 day-access via a Clipper card. Can also get 24h access by becoming a monthly donation.
With 30 day access you unfortunately need a member/philantropist to be in the space since there needs to be someone to close the space.
"Philantropists" can also convey 30-day access.
"Membership" is a process that where current members vett applicants. Membership entails increased responsibilities for the space.
our different online systems- noisebridge slack (ask for access) noisebridge discuss https://discuss.noisebridge.info/ noisebridge wiki https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/ noisebridge meetup https://www.meetup.com/noisebridge/ noisebridge discord https://discord.gg/tddK6NZ
Do-ocratic Task Board[edit | edit source]
Participation also means doing stuff to contribute to the space. Pick some tasks from github, from what needs to be done around you, or whatever, and see if someone will sign up to work on that task. Anyone can sign up and it's a great way to show you are contributing!

Q(Tristian): Is this a TODO for the space or for individual projects?
A(Ryan): Mostly for space projects focused on improvments, not really set up for fun projects yet.
Ryan: Will checkout the doorbell after meeting. Was broken earlier this week.
Setting up Jitsi for classes (computer setup upstairs).
Securing Gate latch (done?)
Setting up bookshelves for library upstairs
Rebuilding the wiki, cleaning up old links.
Will go through on Thursday
LXPK: Already added template for 'needs updating'. Template adds to category. One page that definitely needs reviewing is the Finances page.
Found a list of pages that need major updating.
Added to navigation
Confirm streaming with all event organizers for event page & meetup links #274 https://github.com/noisebridge/buildout-capp/issues/274
Migrate scuttlebutt from "unicorn" to new "brony" server. Was migrated but needs DNS update
https://github.com/noisebridge/UnicornMigration
Additional Noisebridge servers: https://github.com/noisebridge/infrastructure/blob/master/hosts.yml
Fix wiki links to not require /wiki/ to unbreak lots of short noisebridge.net/chm style links. https://github.com/noisebridge/buildout-capp/issues/275
Need to find the person who said they would take the scrap metal
Should document trash process.
Needs emergency lighting. Someone got exit signs but they need install. (Farly?)
Making 3d printer documentation. Ryan has worked with these extensively so happy to walk someone through the process and print something off Thingiverse - if they are willing to document it.
LXPK - can help clean up documents but hasn't doen't have much 3D printing experience.
Setting up and testing laser cutter. Needs work on ventilation, needs to be pumped up to 2nd floor to be up to code.
Q(leon): Is this "in addition" to or "instead of" the fume extractor?
A(Pyconaut): w/ the fume extractor then it can be pumped outside. Plan is to get fume extractor and fund filter replacements. Will bring up with gardn@ about specifics
Woz: already have consensus to buy extractor
Pyconaut: Because of cost might need "big C" Consensus
LXPK: has a pre-approved fund related to moving costs. Considered expedited release of those funds.
Need updated Jitsi documentation.
Make stage area clear and usable (done)
Get electrician quotes for work to be done. TJ already working on this? Ryan willing to help run wires so election can work on outlets/breakers.
Driveway gate: Needs work on "right" (south side) of gate to work on car-sized projects. Needs literal/figurative grinding.
Books need sorting. Probably already done with shelving.
Install projector upstairs. Needs studfinder + drill
Make new fundraising signs with LED cost counter and per station signs for laser cutter etc #277 https://github.com/noisebridge/buildout-capp/issues/277 .
Would be great to have an IRL notification to realtime update when a dontation is recieved. Laser-cut message that has LED grid backing to flash on donation.
Needs backend integration with stripe/paypal/venmo?
Add a QR code for donations
Philanthropists[edit | edit source]
A Philanthropist at Noisebridge has earned enough trust from the community to open and close the space.
(What does that mean? What do we expect from Philanthropists? How do you become one? etc)
Pyconaut- Once you come by for a while and have a lot of trust from the community, people might start asking if you want to become a philanthropist (you can also apply right away if you think the benefits are worth it). A philanthropist is the next trust level after daytime access (30 day token) usually in escalating participation. You get 24/7 access during non plague times, pay some money (40 to 80 dollars a month), you must know how to open and close the space, give tours, and introduce new people to the space. We want you to be able to help more people be able to access the space, and be excellent! To apply you get a big M Member to sponsor you, then you fill out a Philanthropy pledge and read all the associated materials, then you come to a Tuesday meeting to submit the application. During that meeting you will be questioned for a bit, and then if no one objects to you being a philanthropist, you will become one.
Elan is applying for Philantropy. TJ will sponsor (E-sponsor). Will send slack to TJ/Woz/Claus.
Membership [edit | edit source]
Membership in Noisebridge entails community Trust in Consensus.
(What does that mean? What do we expect from Members? How do you become a Member? etc)
Pyconaut- Big M Members are different from just being a member of the community, this is the highest trust level of the noisebridge community, it means that everyone in the community trusts that you would make good decisions about how noisebridge can move forward. This is an annoying bureaucratic level of trust, as the only theoretical benefit is that you get to block big C consensus items, and vote on who we place on our board. To become one, you need to go through a four week process, where you fill out a membership form sponsored by two big M members. You bring it to a tuesday meeting where it is submitted, your membership will be discussed at that meeting, then at the next tuesday meeting your membership is discussed again and if it gets to consensus, you will be asked to leave the room while the members present decide if they want to block you or not, if no Member blocks your membership application you become a Member. For the next two weeks any big M member can retroactively block your membership for any reason. If you get blocked figure out why, fix the issue and then reapply at a later time.
Financial Report[edit | edit source]
Anarchist societies under a capitalist state need money to survive and thrive, yo.
Kind of need it even as an anarchist group
- Funds in bank:
as of 11/16/2021
Cash: $325,736.19 Crypto: $145,016.08 Total: $470,752.27
- Noisetor (See the bulletpoints at the bottom of http://noisetor.net/finances/#summary):
- Any other details by those participating in handling our financials
- The latest financial reports from the treasurer are available at https://noisebridge.net/wiki/Finances
Q(): Is Noisebridge holding on crypto.
A(Ryan): a portion was sold a few months ago to cash out on appreciation. there is talk on moving to an ETF to be a more stable option.
Pyconaut: Would want an ETF that aligns on values.
Tristian: There are a number of ETFs that allow for one to divest on petrol, etc.
Pycoanut: also there are sustainability focused options
Tyler has been managing a lot of this stuff. Sophia (and maybe Lizzard) is shadowing Tyler to take this over.
Q: How does one become a member?
A(Ryan): <repeats process listed earlier>
Fundraising Update[edit | edit source]
How's it all going
Claus would have update on this.
Fundraising is done via community events: Meetups, hack comedy, music events, etc.
Q: Have there ever been an escape room?
A (pyconaut)- almost, was never really finished
LXPK: Previously there have been anniversery events but last year this was skipped so there will be a belated 14th anniversery. Beer is being brewed. GameBridge will demo games. Music performances. Tell us if you have other ideas to exhibit things or auction things or help raise or promote somehow.
LXPK: can use 5mof on dec 23 as a end of year event, and prep for the big fundraiser in feb
https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Five_Minutes_of_Fame_2021_12_23
We have an updated template with the details clearer and we need more speakers and intermission entertainment videos.
5mof: A monthly show-off-what-you've-been-working on event. Project can be anything: software, game, woodworking, something you've worked on for the Noisebridge space
https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Five_Minutes_of_Fame
Consensus[edit | edit source]
Consensus is how the Noisebridge Membership may change how Noisebridge works.
(How does Consensus work? What types of things are good for formal Consensus? What is small-c consensus? What is a "block"?)
consensus is the process by which things that can't be done through basic do-ocracy (things that affect others in the space.) It has two flavors, small c and big C. Small c consensus is the process where things that might cause slight issues in the space (events, big projects, moving rooms, etc), you just talk with the community before doing things. Big C consensus is the process by which actions are taken at noisebridge that are too big, too expensive, or too critical to be done by small c consensus. These are things like Moving, spending a lot of money, or doing legal bureaucratic garbage. This is a two week+ process where an item is proposed on the first week (if possible you should already have the item posted in draft consensus items, and the binder). At that meeting it will be discussed for a while, then the next week it will be discussed again, and if people feel confident, it will be brought up for consensus, and if no big M member blocks the consensus item it passes and becomes a Consensed item.
Proposals from last week [edit | edit source]
(Add any items which are consensed upon or someone has raised a principle objection for to the Consensus Items History page.)
Laser cutter - funding for the fume extractor was pre-allocated in the moving general fund. This was expedited to take advantage of a discount which needed to be completed before the new year.
Pyconaut: Could ask if item could be donated to take advantage of end-of-the-year tax writeoff. Noisebridge is a 501(c3)
Proposals for next week [edit | edit source]
(Add any new items for consensus to the Current Consensus Items page.)
Discussion[edit | edit source]
How to do a larger fundraising event during new covid variants[edit | edit source]
Maximizing social distancing, asking vaccination status, using outdoor spaces, etc.
Trying to avoid the packed space that was the case for past events.
TJ: Pro-vaccine but do not ask for cards because it is deannonymizing. There was a 49 person occupancy limit to allow people to social distance.
LXPK: Could lower the occupancy limit but extend an event over a longer time to accomidate social distancing.
Ryan: Has the limit been updated recently?
LXPK: Unsure but was this limit set based on square footage?
Pyconaut: Should also maximize airflow.
LXPK: Could install fans for the event in the front/back doors.
TJ: 49 was set as an upper bound to accommodate new people.
LXPK: Will update wiki. We should figure out what this is based on Square footage
Ryan: Could estimate it by a ratio of fire marshal limit.
Pyconaut: Whiteboard to indicate number of people in space
Noisebridge Ski/Snowboard trip[edit | edit source]
Tenative plan:
- Rent Airbnb
- Take minivan
- Have both a Weekend and Week trip
Pyconaut: Gets good discounts at Northstar(possibly other Tahoe establishments). Would definitely be down but the north/south shore destinction will definitely affect prices/availability.
Where to post? Slack/Discord/Discuss/Meetup?
Cross post in all but link to a canonical forum for discussion.
Ryan: Will put it together and start discussion for folks not in meeting. Will want to do a prepayment system. Could be worked as a fundraiser.
Pyconaut: It's a great way to disconnect from the city chaos . That even have their own Makerspace in Truckee, and Reno.
https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Hackernationale
Post meeting discussion on floor planning of the new space. Demo of Sketchup/3D scan. Will also have discussion on Thurs
3D model could be used for planning purpose and to show off elevator for fundraising purposes (and to make DnD-scale layouts/props for hackerspace tabletop adventures).
End of Meeting[edit | edit source]
Note taker posts the notes[edit | edit source]
- Clean and tidy the meeting notes including removing all these really verbose instructions.
- Fill out the short summary at the top listing just announcements, consensus items, discussion topics, and names of new members and philanthropists.
- Copy paste the notes to the next meeting page. (They will become Last meeting at midnight.)
- Email the meeting summary to Noisebridge Discuss and Noisebridge Announce lists.
- CC on the email treasurer@noisebridge.net and secretary@noisebridge.net if there are new members and philanthropists.
- Edit the Current Consensus Items if anything is proposed for consensus next week.
- Edit the Consensus Items History if anything was reached consensus or failed to reach consensus this week.
Fun things to do after[edit | edit source]
- Reprise of the Hackernationale. [This is anarchy - we do what the wiki says!]
- PGP Key Signing could happen now (if it doesn't happen before any given Meeting). Ask others around the space or check the list to see who wants in on the action.
