Big C Consensus Items[edit | edit source]

Nobody likes 3 hour meetings, only explain if new people are present. https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Current_Consensus_Items

Consensus Items [edit | edit source]

Only for talking about Big C consensus items, small c consensus items should be discussed with people at the space at the time of the change/new item or can be reserved for the discussion section of the meeting.

Big C - how rules/policy get made

Small C - local agreement

Discussion Items[edit | edit source]

It is recommended to post items for discussion ahead of time at https://pad.riseup.net/p/nbmeeting. (Check that the template for the meeting is in place already, and that last week's notes have been moved to the wiki, of course)

Item prompts should follow the format: From/Raised by: [your name here] Seeking [decision/outcome/advice/something else] On topic: [topic]

Discussion Item : Improving signage around space[edit | edit source]

From/Raised by: JD Seeking: On topic: Improving signage around space

https://docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1GdvsalQwBS9Sh8pb7RFVViMncozKfutbsoc7PuXsx8E/mobilebasic We’re settling on posting at least the resources sign in the bathrooms and the event faqs signage tonight, right?

Discussion Item 1: Increasing laser training cost[edit | edit source]

From/Raised by: Wyatt Seeking: On topic: Increasing laser training cost

Talk about increasing meetup donation on laser class from $5 to suggested $20 total donation when you attend the class. $20 is very affordable for this type of class and it is generally a draw of new people to noisebridge. Currently we recommend people donate an additional $15 to the $5 meetup charge when they actually show up to the class. I'm not very convinced people donate this additional amount and I don't think it would turn people away to require the full $20 donation up front. The class is consistently filled/overfilled with extra people generally showing up. Due to how long the class takes to verify each student can use the laser(generally takes 2.5-3hrs right now) it's hard to justify accommodating more than 4 people to increase the donation income without compensating the members who are teaching the class. Hence, I think we should require the full donation so at minimum this class generates $320 monthly for noisebridge. That is still a drop in the bucket compared to the 12hrs or so of volunteer time the teachers of this class put in. I would also not be opposed to increasing the cost of the training class in general up to something like $40-50 and compensating the instructors for their time with somewhere between 30-40% of that amount. This could have benefits like allowing us to take on more students as instructors could potentially commit to a longer class period. It would also start to address our budget deficiet that hasnt gotten any better since last fall. However I recognize this is a separate item to discuss and I think updating the meetup cost to the already full suggested donation is a good first step. Additionally, we would still continue to accommodate members or nonmembers who financially cannot afford these classes. I never would want to turn people away who really want to learn, but I think most people would be willing and capable to support noisebridge with these slightly larger class donations.

JD - I am fine with raising cost however I am not for trainer compensation. It's not why I do it and I feel Paolo would feel similarly.

Loren - made a NB Luma account (for event RSVPs)

Mark - Is there a donation box at the laser?

Q: Followup. Where is the QR code? A: on the laser hood

Mark: We need to know if ppl are donating for their laser time.

Elle: Ace makerspace has a card reader require payment prior.

It is difficult for event hosts to figure out who has paid.

We've talked about the idea of event monitors, assisting the event hosts with bookkeeping/ppl management

Q(JD): How often do ppl show up 15m late or later to events? A: All the time - even up to an hour late. I can usually catch people up but I'd imagine this is different for laser.

JD: I often have to stall because people are consistently 15m late. Elle: With a class monitor they could focus on catching people up.

Elle: If we paid people it would be so much easier to get teacher.

  • Loren: We can hopefully delegate this to guilds and see what works.

Elle: Even if it's just taxi fare it could help incentivice.

  • $20 up from $5 for laser class. Yes ok.
  • Paying instructors -- tricky, expensive, not absolute agreement for, lots of caveats among members. Willingness to acknowledge instructors more in this way.
  • delegate some finance handling to guilds -- with reporting
  • kilowatt --
    • scrolling led sign
