JD update on permitting process - Michael the Architect gave us a progress update. He's been talking with the city for us. Submitted stuff for planning review for the building permit. Theres a current discussion about how we "define ourselves" as a space, so we can get the correct usage classification.

We have gotten a contractor Matt to come in and help us pull our permits to do work and get said work all inspected. Will be supervising construction of the wall project.

Global Game Jam - January 20-26th! globalgamejam.org

Excellence[edit | edit source]

Our One Rule is to Be Excellent to Each Other. (On first Tuesdays, seek a few definitions. Other Tuesday, give a 1-3 sentence summary.)

Erik - "excellence" is really nice, because it has an umbrella effect for everyone to be not just kind, but understanding of the space itself and how it interacts with its people and the people themseleves with eachother.

What does that mean? Please see our page on excellence https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Excellence!

Anti-Harassment Policy & Community Standards of Excellence[edit | edit source]

Noisebridge has an Anti-Harassment Policy https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Anti-Harassment_Policy Everyone is expected to follow the Anti-Harassment Policy, please familiarize yourself with it.) TWO MINUTES MAX More approachable & specific guidelines, https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Community_Standards https://safespace.noisebridge.net/ is one way to quickly raise issues which will be seen by people in Slack.

Brief Kudos[edit | edit source]

Recent examples of excellent behavior, say 3, unless the passion moves you.

Kudos for Brian B and Flow who cleaned up the electronics room so the pedal building workshop could go well on Saturday!

Also to Brian for labeling our monitors and lcd screens with working status!

Kudos to Ron, Ken, Blue for continued prgress on the wall project!

Kudos to Mitch himself for running an awesome workshop building guitar pedals!

Guilds[edit | edit source]

  • What are guilds - briefly describe (much like the previous section on "Excellence")

New Members/Associate Members[edit | edit source]

What are they? Is anyone trying to become a Member or Associate Member? If not move on. No long discussions.

Financial Report (first Tuesday of month only)[edit | edit source]

Anarchist societies under a capitalist state need money to survive and thrive, yo.

  • Monthly revenue, expenses. Big projects. Big fundraising events. Reserves in bank.
  • Any other details by those participating in handling our financials
  • The latest financial reports from the treasurer are available at https://noisebridge.net/wiki/Finances

~12k expenses, ~6k income ~6k deficit for the month

Spending Needs[edit | edit source]

Gotta spend money on XYZ (i.e. Gate, wiring etc.). WHO CAN SIGN THE CHECK OR LEND THE CREDIT CARD!?!?! It doesn't matter if we agree to do something and it can’t be paid for.

== (discussion item) 1: [topic] == Reimbursement for Ruth Grace for replacement laser filters From/Raised by:JD Seeking: decision/outcome/advice/[?]approval On topic:Laser Filters reimbursment

JD: lazer down, ppl are waiting for it. In the past we bought several filters at a time and they lasted us at least a year. Recently, the latest filters have not been getting as much time. Paolo looking into it, analyzing the ones we have.

Ruth went ahead and ordered some filters on her own. We should reimburse her. Wanted to wait and ask the treasurer to put it on the NB credit card, but she went ahead and pulled the trigger.

Ruth spent ~$2000.

Loren: We should absolutely reimburse ruth. Seems a popular, useful spend. I spoke with Laser guild folks, concerns include desires for some kind of potential badge-in system for more controlled laser use and better accountability for maintenance purposes. And making sure people donate when they use it.

No objections. Everyone in the room consensed support for reimbursement.

Zach Wanted to suggest having a "preventative maintenance for the laser" class. Signage and more obvious (larger) cashbox nearby may help with the donations collecting goal.

Elle: something that worked in sewing: since the laser classes are announced in Meetup, you can add a charge on Meetup. People can pay there on meetup or bring payment to the event.

JD: We already are currently doing that.

[Some discussion ensues about "charging" for classes, including laser class and sewing classes, the laguange surrounding the presentation of said classes, etc etc]

Zach suggested language "no one turned away for lack of funds" for sewing and other classes. expressed some concern at the meetup listing showing a ticket price of $15 for sewing and $20 for woodcutting, and apparently a cost for Lasercutter training now. https://www.meetup.com/noisebridge/events/305275597/?eventOrigin=group_upcoming_events For example, current sewing class language:

"Class is $15 and there may be a materials fee of 10. We do have a sliding scale if the class fee is steep, contact the host."
Zach felt this language was a bit unclear, so suggested clearer "no one turned away" language.

Zach shared historical founding perspective of NB that classes were always free to the public. Says surprised to see the culture change. But "things change" as people said, which is true.

JD expressed he would not want to donate his time and money if people were just using the lasercutter without paying.

Zach shared he is not opposed to teachers being paid (not currently the case). Ellen and others expressed interest in that for the future. Zach said he "doesn't have much of a horse in this race" since classes are upstairs, anyway and he cannot reach them.

Ellen said sewing can be brought downstairs with advanced notice. Zach said he did not wish to open "the can of worms" that is accessibility for the discussion item.

Mark suggested expiditing the discussion since there were other things to go over and most of the details here were language and not a difference in values.

Fundraising Update[edit | edit source]

How's it all going

Big C Consensus Items[edit | edit source]

Nobody likes 3 hour meetings, only explain if new people are present. https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Current_Consensus_Items

Consensus Items [edit | edit source]

Only for talking about Big C consensus items, small c consensus items should be discussed with people at the space at the time of the change/new item.

Discussion Items[edit | edit source]

== (discussion item) 2: [topic] ==Laser exhaust versus Filtration From/Raised by:jd Seeking: decision/outcome/advice/[?]discussion On topic:Laser exhaust

Proposal for moving the laser and updating the exhaust and filtration system: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10QIOZP6xDFoa0v9jDuyNgwMuZxjR2tA1/view?usp=sharing

Consensus is wait till other projects get done , and lets check on how to pull permits for it. Outside-of-building work needs to be approved by landlord probably as well.

(discussion item) 3: [topic][edit | edit source]

From/Raised by:Elle Seeking: decision/outcome/advice/[?] On topic:

Guild's right to refuse draft consensus

" To make abundantly clear that the guild that organizes the use of an item, such as sewing for sewing machines and electronics for arduinos, and gaming for game related controllers, can refuse, dispose of or return to donor donations made to them. If the guild determines an item is not safe for Noisebridge, the guild's determination will be given greater weight than the donor or others who do not or are not trained in the use of the item donated."

This was more or less prompted by a recent donation made to the space - a really nice, albeit really powerful and potentially dangerous sewing machine.

A light conflict ensued.

Who has authority in this space.

Elle: People who might think said donation is cool but maybe won't be necessarily using and maintaining said item maybe shouldn't have as much say about what we do with them, as the guild does.

This proposition is about giving guilds more control over their areas and areas of expertise.

Maybe not so much "control", but a Guild's word should have weight in decision making about stuff relevant to their area.

Ken: It is clear to me that the machine in question was fine, but needed some updates to get it nicely operating. I guess thats just a logistics thing. The point is that the items we get donated sometimes will not necessarily be in the condition we need/expect them to be in to be useful right away. Sometimes we need/want to fix things in-house. People should be on-call for that. It's not clear to me how to handle those kinds of situations. Sometimes this kind of work doesn't necessarily have to be a person of the relevant guild either, so how do we make that decision?

Elle: In the case of our proto-example, there were many issues, such as how it was brought in and immediately creating accessibility issues, etc etc The whole incident was kind of scary to me. It felt like the guild couldn't ake a decision about that donation that time.

I just want it on paper that if a guild expresses concern, that concern should be heeded and given precedence over some individuals' desires.

Mark: Let's do like a template process for describing what "guild's consensus" means exactly. I'll draft up some language and share with you and the group. Could set a good example for Guilds to adopt such that each guild can have its own independent donation policy. That would be in line with the self-organizing ethos of guilds.

(discussion item) 4: [topic][edit | edit source]

From/Raised by:Zach Seeking: decision/outcome/advice/[?] On topic: Discord moderation & moderating rules / transparency / Be Excellent rule

deferred to next week

Do-ocratic Task Board[edit | edit source]

Participation also means doing stuff to contribute to the space. Propose new tasks or pick some tasks from Github, from what needs to be done around you, or whatever, and see if someone will sign up to work on that task. Anyone can sign up and it's a great way to show you are contributing!
