Mark - Hosting the meeting, and I like games! Come to gamebridge on Wednesdays at 7PM!
Loren - Will deliver a treasurer's report, infrastructure Mondays, embroidery project and mystery event to be announced.
JD - here to annoy Mark
Ellen/Elle(pronounced "L") - sewing and writing, and fundraising and today, note-taking!
outrightmental (Nick Charney Kaye) - art, software, game dev - here to see about donating a Ricoh Ri 1000 and starting a DTG program?? Direct to Garment printing.
Alice - intermittenly involved since 2013 - back again to see how I can help!

Daniel - hacks on various things

Mark: AV is easy...easy...easy... Loren: check..check..

Building & use status[edit | edit source]

JD: met, with Paolo and anufacturer rep about Laser filter. The manufacturer rep for the filters is working on things since he was stumped by our problem since we are special. Filters dying too quickly. JD: update on permitting review from the city. Meeting last week with Corey from Zoning. He found our status confusing, community center or industrial space? impact on neighborhood is higher for community center. We are working on conveying what we are and that we are tool based. This guy is trying to find a pigeon hole for us, we want to be careful that it i sthe right one. We need to be reviewed still by a bunch of other city departments including health, buildings and more.

The main departments that have worked to sign off: planning, construction enforcement services

Alice T: to be clear -- noisebridge has a massive virtual community, larger than the city, state, country, space. What happens at 272 Capp is we hold expensive machinery that we want to use collectively. Ellen: What do we want to be? community or industrial space? JD: industrial but with caveats. There is a classification for light industrial nonmanufacturing and that is what we want. For instance, tailoring fits in the industrial status.

In 2019/2020 when the decision was made to move, the prior location was not eligible for this light industrial classification.

Noisebridge decided to keep engaging in some activities that, for safety, are classified as light industrial space with PDR uses.

It's kind of a trap to be treated as a community space, for Noisebridge, because it would prevent us from engaging in many of the activities that we consider core to the purpose of the space.

refreshing everyone's recollection of the decisions made by the community 5 years ago

Elle: Maybe we ought to start talking to the city council. Frankly, there should be a thrid category since we don't [want to believe we] fit into either of those categories neatly. JD: impact fees could be as high as 35k! The guy at the city is holding it over us but the fees do not kick in according to the regs. At the end of the process we will have a better undertanding of what kind of help we need for the higher ups. WE need to know what the ask is. Ellen: Start the relationship with the city elected officials now? JD: has a contact.

Loren: City official group at Noisebridge? Elle: OK, could joing Alice and JD on that Alice: good idea to ask at regular meeting who may have contacts in the city to help this move forward? Always a good thing to have a level of personal connection in this kind of effort.

Short announcements and events[edit | edit source]

Mark: BOARD ELECTION! Fill out this form to nominate someone! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Jq6qY6kfTdoJQvmBOc1b8bBYcgQS7kz18b2ov9UZuVk/edit

Leather class planned - Deep Dive to big leather machine, Deep Dive into serger and cover stitch? Sewing: Short month but lots of classes. See Meet Up for more info in the next few days.

Mark - gonna go see Attack the Block at Alamo at 9:40 tonight. Ask me after the meeting to come! Captain Amer-err-ika in I-max!

Mark: Open Sauce is coming up! Big event, coming in July, 18-20. All the way in San Mateo. It is a hacker and maker event with a focus on content creatures. The kind who live on Tik-Tok and youTube. Real science beings, too. Tickets are 99 bucks but free if you work the Noisebridge booth. Our booth last year was AWESOME!

Excellence[edit | edit source]

Our One Rule is to Be Excellent to Each Other. (On first Tuesdays, seek a few definitions. Other Tuesday, give a 1-3 sentence summary.)

What does that mean? Please see our page on excellence https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Excellence!

Def of Excellence:

Mark: NB is a place you can step up and do things you want to. You can be thw change you want to see in the world!

Anti-Harassment Policy & Community Standards of Excellence[edit | edit source]

Noisebridge has an Anti-Harassment Policy https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Anti-Harassment_Policy Everyone is expected to follow the Anti-Harassment Policy, please familiarize yourself with it.) TWO MINUTES MAX More approachable & specific guidelines, https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Community_Standards https://safespace.noisebridge.net/ is one way to quickly raise issues which will be seen by people in Slack.

Brief Kudos[edit | edit source]

Recent examples of excellent behavior, say 3, unless the passion moves you.

Elle: I spoke to someone who came to sewing 101 this last weekend. Kudos to EVERYONE who fought so hard to make noisebridge safer, cleaner bigger better and helped give this person a much better impression of the space and community after having been here in 2023.

Also kudos to Kyle for helping in sewing quite a bit! To Nick E for moving a giant machine to the hallway for sewing to do something with!

Mark : Kudos to Julius and Daniel for helping the last minute Maker/Hacker high school kids event (all those 3d printers) Brian for continued ongoing stewardship of music room and this nice little group of stewards we got going for the electronics room - Ron, Eric, Brian

Ray for teaching singing!

Guilds[edit | edit source]

  • What are guilds - briefly describe (much like the previous section on "Excellence")

Mark: Music Guild is forming, Electronics Guild is forming. Ellen: Fundraising Guild is forming, held meeting in January and next meeting soon. See wiki. https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Fundraising Loren: Cedric reached out about SEeED. about the small parts manufacturing coming to NB

New Members/Associate Members[edit | edit source]

What are they? Is anyone trying to become a Member or Associate Member? If not move on. No long discussions.

Elle considering applying for Big M membership. Looking for a second sponsor.

Daniel would like to restart Big M process. We restart it, first week now 2/4/25

Question to Daniel: Are you up on major discussion items in the community? (no need to answer, he obviously is!)

Financial Report (first Tuesday of month only)[edit | edit source]

Anarchist societies under a capitalist state need money to survive and thrive, yo.

Venmo transactions TBD

Total revenue for Jan: $4555.17, venmo may add 500-1000 to this
Total expenses: 14,214
rent: 10,100
reimbursements of a few thousand for laser filters and woodshop wall expenses
490 for P.O. box renewal
  • Monthly revenue, expenses. Big projects. Big fundraising events. Reserves in bank.
  • Any other details by those participating in handling our financials
  • The latest financial reports from the treasurer are available at https://noisebridge.net/wiki/Finances

Spending Needs[edit | edit source]

Gotta spend money on XYZ (i.e. Gate, wiring etc.). WHO CAN SIGN THE CHECK OR LEND THE CREDIT CARD!?!?! It doesn't matter if we agree to do something and it can’t be paid for.

Fundraising Update[edit | edit source]

How's it all going Fundraising did have a meeting not long ago in January.

We talked about PIE, and the entities they pay to invite folks to things. Ppl at NB seemed a little weirded out by NB getting funds from ppl just RSVPing to our events via a service (PIE).

Talked about the silent auction idea again. Maybe a one-off silent auction or specific event around it?
Also, setting up NB as a 501(c)(3) to accept pre-tax dollars from investment accounts. Could use a FAQ sheet on how to have your investment accounts' pre-tax dollars used as a donation to noisebridge. Would be really helpful for folks since they would save money and time and it could be a low. We need someone to volunteer to do the research and create said document!

Big C Consensus Items[edit | edit source]

Nobody likes 3 hour meetings, only explain if new people are present. https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Current_Consensus_Items

Consensus Items [edit | edit source]

Only for talking about Big C consensus items, small c consensus items should be discussed with people at the space at the time of the change/new item.

Draft item about guilds' right to refuse. Mark wants to make an edit before moving to Current consensus items page

Discussion Items[edit | edit source]

Discussion Item 0: DTG Printer[edit | edit source]

From/Raised by: Nick Seeking: decision/outcome/advice/[?] outcome On topic: Ricoh Ri 1000 DTG printing machine program? Nick: I am in possession of one of these that I obtained for a very low price. It is taking up the entire back of my car (in a garage thankfully) and it's a 4-person lift to get it out. So, I'm trying to either donate or sell this ASAP. The most excellent thing I can imagine is if this enabled a lively DTG printing program and added that to the mix of crafts in a way the wider community is very excited about. Short of that, I don't want to burden the space with this giant machine. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9h4Osmq0mU&t=239s - https://ricohdtg.com/ricoh-ri1000x-dtg-printer - https://ricohdtg.com/hubfs/19965518/wp/2020/04/Ri-1000-User-Manual-Rev-1.2.6-4-6-20.pdf PROS - Accessibility of printing radical t-shirts. - Best-in-class digital printing on fabric. Big, bold t-shirts and other loud communications. - Print on a wild variety of things. Extreme examples include sneakers, bags, or even printing all over a whole t-shirt or other garment by running it through multiple times. - Comes with licensed expensive software for PC. - Ricoh is known for good service, hopefully we can establish a relationship with them where they are happy knowing where this machine lives and what it's doing. CONS - It's a large machine that needs to sit on a large table, including space for its supplies, accessories, and a tabletop heat press. See: "Space Needed for Printer" in the user manual linked above - Maintenace is complex. Needs to be warmed up for 24 hours and left in a standby mode so it cycles ink in its 6 lines (2x white + CMYK). When it's turned off, it needs to pump cleaning solution into its lines. Monthly/weekly cleanings. (less if we aren't putting it through the all-day-every-day use for which it is intended) - Ink is expensive. One set of cartridges (which I got with the printer) cost $350 which prints about 200 full-coverage t-shirts or thousands of small prints. - Does not require a PC but that is ideal. I have a mini-tower I could donate for that, if there's an extra monitor. - Spray applicator - Dust in the space etc interfering with function - Prevent people messing with it, or put many guard rails on it, or put a whole cover on it. - Check specs on humidity/temperature control requirements

E: So many cool things we do and are considering doing in Sewing and other parts of Noisebridge may be interested in this. It has potential.

(discussion item) 1: front door thing[edit | edit source]

From/Raised by: JD Seeking: decision/outcome/advice/[?] On topic:

We have a grant good for 90 days (probably 45 days, now, maybe 30). We have 3 quotes. One just under the 10k of the grant.Michael the architect has opinions on the door and we considered waiting for the other process but should we move forward rather than wait for the city to give us the other issues.

The fear is that if we do not use the money now we may lose that whole 10k. The irony of that is mind blowing after working on getting that grant for 1 year!

Concern expressed about us getting work done, then being told its not correct, needs re-doing, blah blah blah from another department.
JD/Elle: This is an solid improvement approved and certified by the city ADA compliance org. Most likely any requested additional work from some other dept. would be so minor and negligible.

Loren: suggests doing wiki work on the door as this is ongoing so ppl can be up to date and all that. Loren volunteered to edit!

(discussion item) 2: roof antenna[edit | edit source]

From/Raised by: Elan Seeking: decision/outcome/advice/[?] On topic: Would folks be supportive of a roof antenna setup on the condition we got approval from our landlord? South-east corner of the roof.

Anon: I think its a great idea. But if the landlord comes to me (I rent 276 capp from the same landlord), I'd say not on the southern 1/3rd of the building. Membrane roof- not meant to be walked on. I'm concerned, given how things work at NB, that people may damage the roof again walking on it as they've done in the past.

Not sure, but I think its for spacebridge, right? Yup. There are other antannae and items spacebridge may want up there. A responsible guild like spacebridge may be able to make it less scary by coming up with good roof access protocol?

Anon: I wouldn't really trust anyone at NB to maintain fragile things in a safe way. Some people are excellent, but NB things must be made antifragile, simply due to its nature. If you DID get approval from the landlord, i'm sure he'd want it done the right way, but speaking as a long time NB-er it is very hard for NB to make a promise like what the landlord may want WRT restricted access and regulation.

Financial report Still adding Venmo information for later. Total revenue is 4k and change. Venmo will likely add 500-1k, 5200 likely, cash is 2-300 to add. Expenses: 14,214. Rent is 10k and reimbursements and on going woodshop being the biggest negative. PO box was 490 of that.

(discussion item) 3: [topic][edit | edit source]

From/Raised by: Seeking: decision/outcome/advice/[?] On topic:

Do-ocratic Task Board[edit | edit source]

Participation also means doing stuff to contribute to the space. Propose new tasks or pick some tasks from Github, from what needs to be done around you, or whatever, and see if someone will sign up to work on that task. Anyone can sign up and it's a great way to show you are contributing!
