Short announcements and events[edit | edit source]
- 60-second description per item in bulletpoint.
- 8th of march. Memorial service for Heph Adams (original NB member) there will be a fireworks-based internment on the bay. Limited space on the boat, so we would like to do a pre-event here in the space.
- NERT training: early march series of training once weekly for 6 weeks. if anyone wants to join from Noisebridge, make space more prepared for emergency situations; https://sf-fire.org/nert
- Board elections soon. A month of advanced notice required, so we're planning for three weeks from now.
- Laser is still out of operation. Good news is it is starting to look like the filters are the issue, so that's an easy fix.
- Moving forward with replacing the front door with an ADA compatable door courtesy of the city grant program. We might be required to do an additional percentage of the grant worth of work ($3k, ~30% of ADA door grant amount additional) toward other ADA accessibility improvements.
- Copy-paste any pre-announcements for the upcoming meeting from Announcements.
- After announcements, copy them to the past Announcements list. Retire any from the Next Meeting list that aren't marked ONGOING.

Zoning & Permitting Standing Item[edit | edit source]
Status this week? Helpful broad asks to the community? NB city bureaucracy WG -- JD & Alice, among others.
Read aloud in meeting, or variant: "Noisebridge is under threat by San Francisco bureaucracy. The exact nature of that threat has not been fully determined, but discussions with the city are ongoing, and lobbying may become necessary. If anyone who is attending the meeting this week has a close connection to Jackie Fielder or other officials, please speak now so that we can connect you to the working group."
This week we're drafting a letter, reaching out to Jackie Fielder, District (9?) supervisor.
Under review with the planning department. Video conference with Cory who will make a determination about whether we are a community center or an industrial space.
We want to be considered an industrial space less impact on neighborhood foot traffic. classed other than that - possiblity later down the road we trigger impact fee for displacing an automotive shop with our facilities - we done a little blurb that Noiserbridge is a HUGE online community - capp street is warehouse where we keep tools - get on same page with this because the city "club house with tools" 30-34,000 in fines if we trigger that. Important we present 272 capp street: seperate from what noseirbidge is as an entity for the sake of that impact and that assesment. Reacing hout to jackie fielder: planning department comes in with the wrong decision than we may want to request a hearing and have our legal representation and supervisor we are courting we have been around for 60 years everyone could use toosl.... we need place where we could weld = because of fallout in previous location of a woodframe building. Art and industrial uses.
Alice: Every time we should call out to people in the meeting if you have a connecction with jackie fielder, we'd like to involve you in the process contact JD or Alice to get with the rest of the team.
Question added to mix: add on briefly should we talk more directly about hackerspaces we have wiki pages in coalition of hackerspace one entity - speaks both ways this being a broader movement and club house instance. Speak to uses of spaces in other areas - as inspirtation and prescedent? can't spell argghhh put in working group to continue the conversaitonn. loren halp!
noisebridge is one of the first two hackerspaces as well as ny resister crowd mitch and jake came back from the same in berlin. "we shoudl do this!" :D IF you want historical significant. Dunno if being the first hackerspace is that important in the movement.
zoning and permitting? Selling to city requires what the city would be interested in. We are the first hackerspace one of first two in the country, we are a major tourist destiination: international vistors see us. Supporting us would be a way of dollars spent in the mission.
Nick - Playing devil's advocate this might backfire on us. The city may say increase in foot traffic
Its also speaks to having a vast virtual online community verses a large physical space, the space is not even remotely close to the entire online meeting all at the same time plus there is a motor cycle repair shop passing through and connecting to the physical space: connected to a virtual community if told right.
Who are the players in this decision do they even know about us? From a political perspective; does lori know who we are?
Thats why we want a introductory meeting witht he supervisor so we could start up on the right foot, on the perfect world we would say you are aocmmunity center and in industrial space: these impacts hopefully do not apply if you read the impact ... which document was it?
Plannign cannot move forward until they could find a neat pigeonhole to put us in. Two options. Other than that it wouldn't make any difference to building building inspections or any department. If they come back and say we are a community center and we read the langauge of the law that says these impact feeds: we don't impact the impact feed, building inspection will still look at the planning the same way. Hopefully would get the supervisor in there: ...
Alice - JD is alluding to multiple steps to this process: there was a complaint issued. Number of complaints we are fighting???
There are different departments in San Francisco Bueracracy that don't have any obligiation to agree with each other, new fight, political systems are important we hope to continue the build those relationships.
More than before it's about access: dictates coming down coming on high and no one knows how to implement so its a matter of getting the right attention to interruprted in our favor.
We have multiple layers of political support we could tap into: we could reach out to counsel member ; mayor office further up governers office mayors office is the highest level that will have an effect on this. Having anyone in the chain of political representation: Lower level regulatory level, someone who could get in contact with regulator to what is going on.
Scott Weiner? Positioned as "pro-doing stuff" Not letting beracracy get in the way.
Electrical: compliance electrical. lets hope those 30,000 dollars spent improving the space has that effect.
Excellence[edit | edit source]
Our One Rule is to Be Excellent to Each Other. (On first Tuesdays, seek a few definitions. Other Tuesday, give a 1-3 sentence summary.)
Excellence is a great word because it combines the BILL AND TED sense of being excellent to each other being a mcommunity b eing good to each other while at hte same time calls up being better than average being excellent is being extraordinary above the run of the mill. The word has this intersection of kindness of community with above and beyondness that Noisebridge typifies.
We really didn't want any rules. ONE WORD.
What does that mean? Please see our page on excellence https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Excellence!
Anti-Harassment Policy & Community Standards of Excellence[edit | edit source]
Noisebridge has an Anti-Harassment Policy https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Anti-Harassment_Policy Everyone is expected to follow the Anti-Harassment Policy, please familiarize yourself with it.) TWO MINUTES MAX More approachable & specific guidelines, https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Community_Standards https://safespace.noisebridge.net/ is one way to quickly raise issues which will be seen by people in Slack.
Brief Kudos[edit | edit source]
Recent examples of excellent behavior, say 3, unless the passion moves you. Kudos: to Sergio for cleaning up the woodshop: alive clean limbo space taken care of. Kudos: to Nick for teaching a great embroidary? embrioadry? help i need spell check class Sewing cleanup crew who magnanimously offered to come clean up again. We are doing another cleanup this May. We are going to do the wall facing the front of the building this time. It's going to be a LOT of stuff. Don't remember the name - they organized a group to meed at NB this weekend and now it's going to be a regular thing. It started off as just a group of people putting together a model, but now it expanded to include cosplay. And the reason we're having the lights class is because they asked.
Kudos to folks who are taking out the trash on mondays MANY PEOPLE HELPED WITH TRASH YESSSS!!!!! SERIO AND BRIAN!!!!
Kudos to Sergio for building a doggy ramp for Fred - Elan Errikk - arts computer section in front of building on 2nd floor sketch pad. Mohammad - inscape on it, put together embrodiery designs pls help with spell check one of you, sketch pad in sewing room. start drawing on the tablet here. visual art at noisebridge.
Guilds[edit | edit source]
- What are guilds - briefly describe (much like the previous section on "Excellence")
give yourself a role: channel bot give yourself a role and you will hear all the conversations in that guild. If you want them to be something more figure out how to make that happen.
New Members/Associate Members[edit | edit source]
What are they? Is anyone trying to become a Member or Associate Member? If not move on. No long discussions.
Applying for "M". Big M application.
- Ellen, big M membership. Sponsors are Elan and JD.
Loren - What difference will this make to you and to the space? Elle - make me feel part more the space, resent, time and space not part of it as much as i could be. Space: it would mean I would be more careful about contributing. Two: Believe that it iwll give me a stronger voice when we reach the point of voting and rules and new ideas for the space. Associate member for a year: vote on big "M" stuff.
Loren - Dynamic worried about:
This is = everyone in the meeting has a chance to voice and object to things and put better things into place. Worried that the label of the title...If you are willing to block something - willing to walk a way if the community goes to a different direction. Want you to feel included and empowered but it feels like being able to escalate factor.
Elle- Less about blocking things and more about feeling better and more connected in introducing things. fundraising and coming up with ideas and moving foward with that. Talk to folks about fundraising - it is a different experience to say "Hi I am a volunteer and a member". Even though is has no meaning to us beyond the big 'M" stuff beyond the associate member stuff - it does have an internal feeling for me. Change in power for me, change in form.
JD - we read her application for three consequtive meeting after this last one is traditionally sometimes people are asked to leave the room: walk around the block. ask the tradition - eveyrone buys a round of sycamore. that last meeting grilling questions. Regular membership.
We've taken in the process that happens tonight.
Sending in form: sent it to Elan and JD. X on both of their signatures later. Send it to.
Daniel: Reporting in for the second week after applying for Big M membership! Sponsors: Mark, Loren
Financial Report (first Tuesday of month only)[edit | edit source]
Anarchist societies under a capitalist state need money to survive and thrive, yo.
- Monthly revenue, expenses. Big projects. Big fundraising events. Reserves in bank.
- Any other details by those participating in handling our financials
- The latest financial reports from the treasurer are available at https://noisebridge.net/wiki/Finances
alice: question about finances it sounds like our expenses are way higher than our incoming funds and i seem to recall this is normal cylical effect to fundraising.
Revenue negative since moving to the new space. Decreased membership during covid. Ultimately we haven't reached a place where we are substainable each month. 100,000 in cash in the bank, regaining access to our coinbase account, active management control it has been entrust with someone we can't move that money around 300,000 in savings i hate to imagine monthly shortfall 6,000 is more like where its been but more spending recently. venmo: some adustment there. some checks end of the year fundraising, less than 2,000 overall from fundraising. 6,000 a month in deficet. okay for 50 months.
Raise this because of history: of NB on the brink of financial ruin and going all out to raise funds at the last minute; healtheir process is to have a plan now. Not something you could revisit at a later date: I just want to raise it as possibility.
We are already in that process: fundraising: group: if you like more information. Fundraising group is working on that and would much appreciate more support in people coming to meeting and coming up with ideas. Email appeal: last month came out of the fundraising group. More classes, charging small amounts, embroidary class 12 people attend and donated $15.
There are a lot of small efforts that are smaller to see. Sewing class tend to charge a bit and sell out and 10 more more people attending the lights class is going to be 15 per person.
Alice: if we have a standing item for the city issue. We should have a standing item for fundraising to check in. If we are cash fund negative -
Spending Needs[edit | edit source]
Gotta spend money on XYZ (i.e. Gate, wiring etc.). WHO CAN SIGN THE CHECK OR LEND THE CREDIT CARD!?!?! It doesn't matter if we agree to do something and it can’t be paid for.
Fundraising Update[edit | edit source]
How's it all going response to end of year email. Information about how its going:
Report if you want more information: fundraising go on fundraising channel on discord to find meeting notes on last meeting: we have not gotten a meeting in feb just jan. Suggestions if you want to add, post on discord and come to next meeting. Auction: $2000 planning for that auction is what we will talk about at the next meeting. Spoke to an organization: that supports nonprofits in fundraising aims they do charge money but they assist in maintaining the email list: fundingraising campagins $3,000 and interested in giving a presentation to Noisebridge:
Name of organization: ???????? *will we ever find out?
Bonterra is the fundraising program and the potential times are: Monday from 10 am pst-2:45 pm pst Tuesday from 9 am-2:15 pm pst Wednesday from 9 am-2:45 pm pst
Serigo did fundraising with tools we need to imrpove here: trying to propose to this specific meeting for earnings plan income plan and talking to JD: Limits at Noisebridge how to make money focus meeting to develop income plan unexplained fundraiser. Subjective: guarentee. I dunno how to move forward but would like to try to improve that.
Subscription boxes: And give it to the people who is donating to people as extra. Very nice if discussing about program. Any tool that can be a strategy for Noisebridge.
Big C Consensus Items[edit | edit source]
Nobody likes 3 hour meetings, only explain if new people are present. https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Current_Consensus_Items
Consensus Items [edit | edit source]
Only for talking about Big C consensus items, small c consensus items should be discussed with people at the space at the time of the change/new item.
Discussion Items[edit | edit source]
Item 0: Direct-to-Garment (DTG) Printing Program at Noisebridge[edit | edit source]
From/Raised by: Nick [outrightmental] Last week:
- _______ mentioned that _______ equipment was moved, creating some vacant space, and this might be usable for a DTG printing area - Nick moved the Ricoh Ri 1000 into his (climate controlled) garage for now, where it is on in standby mode (9-12 watt draw, btw) keeping correct temperature with cleaning solution in its ink lines- so the time pressure is relieved. NB has a communit sewing fabrication 3D printing and lazer cutting, etc etc. If you put in garments and textile frabrication: run fabrics printer: technique is actually top shelf t shirt printing put in a back and shopping mall - thats the printer in good shape talk to rico and work something out if planned right send right to send a technition. Long term version of it of the space: has a big draw appeal, stay in use, relative to ink and maintience, bottom, too much of pain to make use, make sure we don't have it laying around. ken: do we know the volume this machine occupies in working order? Dimensions. Big consideration. The machine literally sits on a table 2 feet wide 4 feet long, physically displaces 3 feet wide in the middle, you oculd take a full t-shirt, bags shoes, mounts to a fixture and sent into the printing area. so it needs a heatpress. sprayer and electric sprayer. out in the yard. Want to measure the space: 3D printing wiki page. Lazer cutting stuff. Getting in there delay it and leave it around. Get in there and leave it around making sure it works, cleaning solution, correct maintainence, ink cartages, 6 ink cartiages get in the space and get to that schedule with RICO techniition: fun because it loses value :D :D :D Would you have space in that space the sewing machine used to be in front of the doorway in front of the 3D printer: 3D printer door close. Concerned that it's not just one unit, it is one unit with expensive ink. Fair amount of maintience, and care. heat that comes from machine, chemical sprayer for each tshirt, thats more than what we were talking about it in last meeting. We need to be careful how set it up. Group of folks, that organize sewing. Someone need to stuwart it. Art, a lot of own test. Not worth the effort. Key commmitment to whole community there. Maintiance, slower but doable. Fabrication community - start out cover whichever way - you can't just walk up and mess with. Make cover with. Box or vinyl situation. Warn if you use vinyl, sewing machine people kept putting stuff on top of it brightly covered top then people started to respect it the way they want it to. We do have a sewing cabinate. Not set up. Store whole unit in sewing cabinate it has a roll out table. maintinence: how many person hours we are talking about critical maintience. Kind of machine that suffers greatly from lack of maintience. if you dont use it certain amount then the ink makes it unusuable. Deadbaseline it has to stay on: measured it its 12- watts..
Baseline: maintence: it has to be use part of it being there keep track of itself working on a network: you could overdo it if you want to. Monthly: 1-2 hour thing and then weekly autocleaning routine: if someone just runs it its 15 minutes or something then printing itself is best could calculate 50 dollar ink. 200 tshirts if they are big tshirt prints few thousand. scales well. solution treat treatment: you get little jugs electric sprayhead: heat transfer heat press: safety expect: it won't light on fire if you walk away from it.
Garment here: design: Noisebridge stack of t shirts: or are you picturing someone coming in with a shirt and nb is only responsible for providing ink.
Nick- sits on a table 2' wide by 4' wide
- Drafted the wiki code to create a page https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/DTG_Printing for the purpose of coordinating this effort
Seeking:
- Approval of my request for a wiki account (user: outrightmental) so I can draft the new wiki page - Meeting with Elle (tomorrow) to look at the space and see if a DTG printing space is feasible - I'll be at Noisebridge tomorrow afternoon and early evening for Gamebridge
Next:
- I'll put together a proposal for the program, I'm thinking in the form of the new DTG_Printing wiki page, which I will write without linking from anywhere
Item 1: Finances, deficits, & fundraising[edit | edit source]
From/Raised by: Loren, Alice T, Ellen Seeking: shared sense of the challenges, potential reasonable goals On topic: Finances, deficits, & fundraising
Sergio: Fundraising important organize it: been trying to propose main program main earning program that different tools to make money. Specific meeting earnings. Talked with JD and Errik. Mark. In the last few months. Still here asking for lets make money as possible. We can't be negative month by month.
Julius: Talked to the person who signed the lease for the space, frustrating. Noisebridge Twitter. Folks willing to donate tin. Book hard to donate potiential donations on the balance sheet.
Elle: eveyrone should be able to comment edit. Fundraising has a gogle doc. If you have a propsal for how to ask people for money add in the google doc. Our next meeting for fundraising: february: put it on the discord. Great ideas. Passion. Frustrating having done this voluntarily for a year, often get people pull aside - they dont want talk to about it they just wnat to talk. being specific if you want to talk about a particular project or idea just put it in there. general idea plug in.
Mark: Do you have a date for the meeting?
Elle: Rather discuss on discord channel.
Mark: Poll, availability.
Julius: problem is it cannot realistically happen until the sound wall complete see how restructure at the space. controversial nominal amount of cost for lockers at the spaceL people get a locker, and then park their stuff, and walk away. And there is no real cost to it, people aren't very judicious with the space they use want to use structure: $1 or $5 a month. At least aware you have a locker with things in it. It's not free. Smaller and larger, is a good idea. Cubby sized, then you could have enough room for a project that could fit a shoebox something you could carry in your backpack and take it home and going larger and useful for people who want large projects in the space. Boat people! Object where this a home for it. Discussion that came from Zach: there is a makerspace: cabinate tree stuff; stold out all the storage space before they opened $100/month. If its $10-$20 for a large storage bin.
Sergio: Have paid $150 more for it.
Ken: Storage space. Most important point withdraw. If you want to keep the locker, $5 of your presence here for the locker.
Juluius: Usage of the space "do not hack" . If you want to use the space that way get a locker or put your name date all these things we expect of people no one feels comfortable taking stuff when there is no recourse or real place to put it in the space tragedy of the commons. Brought up once in a while it can't go forward until sound wall is done.
Ken: We could have a trial run. Locker. Locker check. Push forward this idea. Push come forward. Payment... i heard espresso.
Julius: ORGANIZE A DAY FOR LOCKER CHECK
elle; sewing will be getting locker soon right outside will not be charging movement to charge. sewing can be a part of that. Sewing locker will be specifically for sewing supplies. we don't ahve access to supplies. Other side of the block.
Storing int he space; Room. int function.. i am bored.
Use of the space, efficently, cubby, nominal ammount, empty cubby, name date, something. last social contract. Cubby.
Pls save me I hate note taking....
it will move around and diffuse in the space. Trial program: Locker getting things going bigger storage.
Consensus item; locker check $5 looooonnnger process of labeling.
LETS MAKE IT $10 FOR A LOCKER ;D
Sewing lockers will be excluded.
storage space: taken up by wood project from john.
organizting this rolling process mark on the markers, one row of lockers, claim it before "x" date. Decide reasonable timeframe and structured storage system part of that will be the cubby and the woodshop. Including this wall in this system now.
John is at Justin's. we don't wanna toss it. ;(
Let it out of here.
in coordinating with mediator. next week everyone feels like they have their time to figure shit out move stuff.
InSan Francisco for a storage unit 24 dollars for a square foot?? did I hear that correctly?
First step: give us your contact info >:(
Some way to reach. no contact info: its available to take. you should ahve your number do not hack sign. reitterate that. no one gets their feelings hurt. Discord. Elan whisperer: active month during the audit but it was 3-6 months. Drop slips in locker, in locker. He was suggesting for funraising meeting: conditonal beforehad. he has lots of contacts in existing spreadsheet. Election get things in order. Wanted to do a grant serach for this year. last year grant search we got 2 grants out of. $11,000. This year STPIR grant. Harder time access it for lots of reason. Good position for grant funding. If volunteer wants to help with grant searches that would be great. SPIR? Other sources. They wanted to have a PI (who's research initiative). Grant: Also has specific to business development space. Building on the fact that business ideas has come out of us.
it's in grant meeting. discord. Fund raising discussion items. Any specific suggestions for fundraising?
Loren: Encourage people to take this online. Style of discussing things, be a source of more pain than help. In my treatment for a year or half.
Julius: Mystery for larger proposal. More individually grant applications.
Ken: Conncentrate on getting it from community. 3D printers. Automated. Laser cutter. Scan a card and you got an hour. We could much better every month to avoid deficet. Lockers and T-Shirts.
daniel: expert knitting person and heard all the allegations in the space and was turned off by that.
San Francisco Knitters group. One group was told not to work with us because of negativity that happened with us. Things are improving Elle has reached out to the person who put that out to see if we could get those comments retracted

Do-ocratic Task Board[edit | edit source]
Participation also means doing stuff to contribute to the space. Propose new tasks or pick some tasks from Github, from what needs to be done around you, or whatever, and see if someone will sign up to work on that task. Anyone can sign up and it's a great way to show you are contributing!
