Excellence[edit | edit source]
Our One Rule is to Be Excellent to Each Other.
What does that mean? Please see our page on Excellence !
Heather: contributing positively to things
Braelynn: if i am going to do something i ask myself "is taht excellent" and if no, i think "yeah that's not excellent."
Angello: common sense. don't treat people badly. feeding onto the vibe of Noisebridge
Anti-Harassment Policy & Community Standards of Excellence[edit | edit source]

Brief Kudos[edit | edit source]
Jet: everyone helping with Opensauce
Heather: kudos to Johnny for helping repair some 3D printers
Braylen: Jet leading the meeting [esp when they didn't feel like it -nthmost]
Guilds & WGs[edit | edit source]
Heather: Sewing Guild meeting in 2 days (Kavya: "really? i didn't see anything in the discord about it"). Oh, then
Naomi: Music guild is deciding the music guild meeting date and time.
Jonathan: is there a 3d printing guild?
Jet: yes! there's a bunch of individuals in the 3d-printing channel
Nthmost: No! that's not a real guild. or at least that's not enough to call it one yet.
Heather: Yeah there's clearly a need for better organization
Jonathan: cool... let's get organized
New Members/Access Members[edit | edit source]
Michael: access member, I'd like to liquidate Noisebridge. Wait, no. i've loved NB from the beginning, always so stimulating [Michael's an OG who remembers the electron microscope]
Angelo: Core member (1st week applying) [Elan sponsporing] - why i want to become a member, i love NB, the culture, the community, being part of it and everything that it means to be a NBer. Core member b/c it's holds some significance, emotional weight. Access member is like dating, Core member is like getting married. I don't have a ring, but. yeah. :D
jd: [wants to see Angelo's face. JD turns the camera to him. "ok great"]
Spending Needs[edit | edit source]
- Blitz and Nthmost are going to spend the remaining $100 of budget for the pallet
- Kavya wanting bobbin covers, like $9
- LX: 43" repair TV in the coffee table $200, tent for events. Both things purchased [nthmost: please send this to Zulip and/or treasurer@noisebridge.net b/c Zacchae won't see messages on Discord.]
Jonathan: H2D printer: there's a bunch of carbon fiber buildup on the heads for one of the 3D printers. We could spent $52 for a high-flow nozzles. Need two so about $120-150 (wiggle room for tax + shipping). These broke from misuse. There are signs to prevent this but people are messing up anyway.
LX: $160 storage cart for laser cutter materials [where will it fit?]
Nthmost: i can suggest that once the Thermotron is gone it'll fit behind the killer queen cabinets.
Fundraising Update[edit | edit source]
Khalila wants to get some grants, see discussion below.
Consensus Items[edit | edit source]
Discussion Items[edit | edit source]
Kavya: embroidery software, which computer to install it on
Naomi: guild practices
Kavya: ppl not respecting things
Jonathan/Heather: let's get a 3D printer guild going
Taylor: Event in the works - cartography + mapping. July 23rd 6:20-8pm.
Khalila: how to secure a grant for nb, statement of needs, what does NB need?
- IKM updates
1: Mapping event proposal[edit | edit source]
| On topic | Mapping event proposal |
|---|---|
| From/Raised by | Taylor |
| Seeking | consensus and advice |
Taylor: 5mins of ppl demoing their mapping related projects, or things they were working on. low-pressure env to gather ppl who love maps together, socialize.
[Jet asks the questionnaire]
Taylor: 49 or fewer people. Downstairs hackitorium. Accessible for ppl to get in.
Jet: any special equipment?
Taylor: some kind of display equipment.
Jet: any fees? Mostly NB or non-NB people?
Taylor: no fees. Some combo, wouldn't be surprised if there were several NBer.
Alex: I used to work in self-driving cars and would likely want to come.
Jet: open a post on the event forum so we can continue talking about this. serving food, alcohol, music?
Taylor: light snacks and water. nowhere near any devices or anything.
Jet: oh yikes that's electronic music Thursday.
Taylor: ok we'll look at the calendar.
2: IKM updates[edit | edit source]
| On topic | IKM updates |
|---|---|
| From/Raised by | Heather |
| Seeking | awareness |
Heather: Drynn's making awesome progress. machine needs maintenance. most ppl still don't know how to use this yet.
Michael: any tech or knowledge this thing needs? open sauce networking event this weekend, this thing always impresses people.
Jet: Drynn's going to open sauce to demo his own knitting machine that he MADE.
Heather: Drynn's leaving at the end of this summer.
Nthmost: GREAT opportunity to talk about guild practices.
3: Embroidery software[edit | edit source]
| On topic | Embroidery software |
|---|---|
| From/Raised by | Kavya |
| Seeking | advice |
Kavya: curious how to get that going, would love to get trained on how to do embroidery here.
Heather: do you know if the software runs just on Windows or can it run on Linux?
Jet: this might be best done in the sewing guild meeting.
Heather: just wanna say, most computers here are running Linux, not windows.
4: Guild practices[edit | edit source]
| On topic | Guild practices |
|---|---|
| From/Raised by | Naomi (nthmost) |
| Seeking | discussion / awareness |
Naomi: We have ways guilds show up. we have ways to improve practices. when guilds are getting started, it's good to have monthly meeting at least to organize needs. maybe every other week. at beginning need to workshop the date with everyone as possible. if you've only talked with 1-2 people it wont be successful. Case in point: when Drynn leaves at summer, the IKM will probably go back to "it should be taken away from NB". Just one person making progress and knowing how to use a thing isn't enough to justify a large machine that takes up a lot of floor space. We need someone to step up and share the value that Drynn brings so theres enough people that know how to use the ikm. What ideas do you have.
LX: It should be videoed so more people can learn about it. when doing training, do video.
Kavia: previously, Loren was running it now Drynn. i don't know if theres a meeting time. if there is a meeting then we can do it.
Naomi: this is why regular meeting times are important.
Kavia: documentation is important. needs to outlive people.
Naomi: agreed.
Heather: for IMM it could be helpful to get sewing guild on board to share knowledge. I think I'm good at organizing and I am interested in helping.
Naomi: you could invite dryn to sewing guild meeting
Jonathon: whoever is the subject matter expert to explain with a stream of conciousness and let the expert talk. with that you can transcribe and figure out what training could be. some people know a lot and some can train a lot. video isn't the only option.
Naomi: all of these practices can also apply to the 3d printing guild.
Khalila: I could help. I'm a media producer.
5: Guild materials not being respected[edit | edit source]
| On topic | Guild materials not being respected |
|---|---|
| From/Raised by | Kavya |
| Seeking | awareness / advice |
Kavya: i went out to get food and i came back to find my plastic ruler was cut with a rotary cutter, so the edge is now messed up forever. WHY would you use a cutter on a plastic ruler?!
Naomi: This is what Noisebridge has always called "Entropy". what you describe is frustrating and impacts what people care about the most and it's hard to keep people accountable. Small things that are easy to mess up from people who don't come very often that just do things to the space. Like woodshop drills nad hammers or nails going missing. Noisebridge Entropy. You need to either go to enforcement or accept things get fucked up. We have an open door policy so if we wanted to be stricter, we'd have to trust people less. These are the tradeoffs. the middle is reimbursements, inconvinient.
Kavia: we had one clear ruler. I will get another and put my name on it. Makes sense. For sewing guild, for ruler not a big deal. but for the machines if someone breaks an important part. it can't be used. there's nothing we can really do about it.
Heather: with sewing specifically, the rotary cutter might be the issue? maybe in the sewing room maybe it'd make sense to lock tools that are easy to mess stuff up with?
Kayva: maybe if there was ONE machine under lock and key there's a guarantee at least one is missing?
Michael: It helps if people have ownership. It's a facility but we need ppl to feel responsible for it. In the military we'd just have a few planes that fly all the time, the mains crew was just doing their jobs. "no one washes a rented car." The maintenance crew then writes their names on that plane, "we took care of this plane." Sewing guild suggestion: give credit, show who's maintaining things, show off who's been trained to use the machines. maybe even on the wall.
LX: Maintenance logs. We need to make it more of a practice to post their progress, issues, etc. I got these little whiteboards, you can quickly write something for the machine you're on, the thing you just did, etc. Part of a package of things.
Naomi: I had a chat with Dryn and Erin about equipment logs. Their responces is they already post things on discord. This is already a practice. I have a backup process called Munin. We could use
Daniel: Is the door code for the sewing room being shared too Can we purchase a small cuby for storing personal items in luei Of lockers
Heather: i don't think that was the issue. locking cubbies, maybe?
Kavya: we had someone recently say she couldn't get into the sewing room, so maybe we're not sharing the code widely enough?
Naomi: i would caution ppl on divining patterns on one person's difficulty.
Jet: the sewing room is usually open all day and only closed at the very end of the day. maybe it's best if sewing ppl actually lock it when they are finished.
Kayva: maybe that would help? we could try that and see how it changes things.
6: Grant proposal materials[edit | edit source]
| On topic | Grant proposal materials |
|---|---|
| From/Raised by | Khalila |
| Seeking | discussion |
Khalila: guild is currently dormant, i don't wanna step on any toes, i just want to help see if we can get some funding. i think we can get it done easily. it'll take a few months. just wanted to get a sense of what we need done, equipment upgrades, what they'd like to see. Two types of grants: GOS means you can use it for anything -- what i'm thinking of doing -- and then project-specific (prolly not working on any of those).
LX: could we start a fundraising guild meeting for that?
[overall nods]
Jet: what should we be thinking about?
Khalila: i've been looking at arts and education grants.
Naomi: It would be nice to have an elevator or stair lift. Would benefit us in this conversation to think big. All the things we've put off as they seemed too expensive to do -- that's what this is.
Khalila: yes exactly.
Lucifer: soundproofing the music room. flooring, need to rent sanders and polishers and materials. We're also adding shelving.
Naomi: moar electrical outlets! [Jet: YES]
LX: "make your own vending machine" -- every guild could dispense the materials they need to dispense. if we do that, stocking machines w/ stuff. goes back to the standing budget per guild thing.
Jet: Murals. we've hired muralists before and we have a lot of blank walls.
Heather: on electrical, maintenance + upgrades on existing circuits. more amperage.
Naomi: speaking on behalf of woodshop. cordless drills drivers, batteries and lockers for them.
Heather: there is ONE locker w/ some cordless stuff. dunno if they want more.
Khalila: they also have grants for ADA and safety and repairs. GSO would be great for murals. One more question, how do we feel even tho it's an anarchist space, how do we feel about corporate sponsors?
Naomi: conditional. bring it to the meeting table so everyone can weigh on, make sure it's ok.
Taylor: how has funding worked for this place?
Naomi: donations, sometimes ppl drop a few $1000, we once got a bitcoin and we sold off slices of it for years.
Michael: Ritual Roasters will donate coffee to us forever. it's old and not "ritual" branded but it's still coffee. They get to write it off as a loss.
Jonathan: i can get someone in to get an estimate of what it'd cost to get the ADA lift.
Sid: how do i do matching donations?
Nthmost: Benevity.
7: 3D printing guild inception[edit | edit source]
| On topic | 3D printing guild inception |
|---|---|
| From/Raised by | Heather |
| Seeking | awareness / consensus |
Heather: maintenance of the 3d printing room is pretty poor.
Sam: for the past month i've been going to help out, every single time, 1 to all of the printers have been down from the 1st of this month, we've pulled filiment out of the AMS, issues easy to resolve in a reasonable amt of time when you know what's just happened, but when it's just left behind by someone, you have to go through troubleshooting steps so you don't damage it. so if you don't know what likely happened you spend 30 mins troubleshooting what should be a 10-minute issue.
Jonathan: tbc, some could be improved w/ better guidelines in the hoops that ppl would follow. some requires sitting down and going through the diagnostics or getting trained. "i come and i print and i walk away." some is Entropy and we accept that. i'm assuming others are equally frustrated, saying if we don't have a guild.
Naomi: When I came back in December from hiatus. There was only one guy doing 3d printing, Daniel Web. I asked "are there Guilds" the responses were a bit strange-smelling. We had a lot of people expecting that ppl had to implement Guilds as a bureaucratic nightmare. So I did a presentation about the spirit of doing guilds. And I approached Daniel saying it can't just be you. He said, "I'm just a guy" and "I don't want to be the head of a guild". When only one person takes care of it and they leave then it goes into disarray when they leave -- this is an antipattern. So now with 3D printing, you're in the "good problem to have" which is you know exactly what the problems are and why you need to organize to fix them. and you have a lot of people who care, which means you have a lot of things ready to make a proper guild.
Jonathan: We could put a pincode on the door.
Michael: It's Doocracy
Heather & Lucifer: That door is locked a lot.
Heather: I'd be fine to organize but not run the guild.
Naomi: there is no real guild at the moment.
Sam: There is a culture with nice people bringing non standard filaments not taking care after. CF and rubber is hurting h2d and p1s.
Lucifer: This is kind of Chaos.
Heather: People use it as a print shop
Josh: Daniel has been taking care of it. Now he's stopped and people are upset that it's not being taking care of. He is busy being secretary and does what he wants. it's now your turn to be responsible, add a pin code.
Jonathon: Get a regular meeting, canvas a bin, express ideas, hope for consensus. Then start doing it.
- Heather, Sam, Lucifer: lets do it
Micheal: for sewing people , the orientation for the 3d printing si theres filament over here and heres the computer. Very easy but there's alot more to it and knowlage isn't being passed down.
Naomi: Residual effects from Daniel being "the guy". If someone needed help then they'd find Daniel and he'd help. This was a social system where no one learned anything. We can't just end up with that one person.
Jonathan: Teach good practices and hope people follow them
Naomi: You might need attendants and have a person they can talk to. "I need help" they learn in process. You might need someone around as a mentor / office hours.
Jonathan: That's a big ask to have someone just hanging around all the time.
Naomi: Well, without that theres a problem, people wandering using machines, not knowing about the guild, and not knowing what's going on.
LX: Yeah, Daniel would just appear. If we reinstituted the weekly 3d printing / fabricating meeting then 1 of those a month become the guild meeting.
Do-ocratic Task Board[edit | edit source]
Participation also means doing stuff to contribute to the space. Propose new tasks or pick some tasks from Github, from what needs to be done around you, or whatever, and see if someone will sign up to work on that task. Anyone can sign up and it's a great way to show you are contributing!
