Discord question: roles in community -- 2024-04-07 Thu[edit source]

At more length:

  • we have community members who come and use the space, guests & regulars alike. Most people make excellent use of the space in this role, there is no need or mandate to do more. With more recognition comes more expectation from the space, i.e. from other committed participants)
  • we have philanthropists, who agree to take on some responsibility for maintaining the space. Often they can let themselves in during open hours
  • we have members, who, in addition to the space, agree to be responsible for the community, actively helping to resolve (or proactively smooth over) disputes, lead classes or contribute actively in an on-going way, and keep in communication with other members to know what’s up in the space, and help many people make excellent use of it
  • we have board members, members of the board of directors, who are, in the eyes of CA and US law, responsible for what happens in the space (within the bounds of reason). Noisebridge culture has long asked and expected board members to act in as minimal a way as possible – staying out of sight and out of mind – but keeping our “ducks in a row” with taxes, rental agreements, insurance, and legally appoint delegates to do this work, or ensure it gets done
