Talk given at NB16, Noisebridge's 16th Anniversary, December 14, 2025. Subtitled: "An unronic anarchist manifesto for Noisebridge."

1. The Minimal James Joyce Move[edit | edit source]

In 1947, a group of literary nerds in New York made themselves official: The James Joyce Society.

They didn't own Joyce's books.
They didn't control who got to read them.

They had no institutional power, no accreditation authority, no exclusive access to anything.

They just pointed at each other and said:

"This person knows their shit about Joyce."

And the world believed them.

People put "President, James Joyce Society" on their resumes. It meant something. It still does.

Why?

Because they built a system where expertise could be recognized, transferred, and reproduced.

That's it, that's the whole magic trick.

And Noisebridge needs to learn it.

2. Noisebridge Failure Mode: Bus Number + Amnesia[edit | edit source]

User:Mcint has a saying: "If it didn't go on the wiki, it didn't happen."
LX has another: "What's your bus number?" — meaning, if you got hit by a bus tomorrow, would your work die with you?

At Noisebridge, the answer is usually yes.
Bus number: 1. Or 0.

We're really good at:

  • Doing incredible projects
  • Forgetting what happened three months ago
  • Burning people out
  • Losing institutional memory every time someone leaves

Someone saves the space from closure? Amazing. Do we document how they did it? No.
Someone builds the woodshop from scratch? Incredible. Do we create a path for others to learn what they learned? Not really.
Someone fixes the network? Thank god. Can anyone else fix it when they're gone? Probably not.

We have expertise.
We just refuse to make it reproducible.

3. Credit Is the Missing Infrastructure[edit | edit source]

Here's the pattern I see over and over:

Someone does something amazing. You thank them.
They say: "Oh, I'm just a guy who knows stuff."

It sounds humble.
It feels anarchist — no hierarchy, no ego, no authority.

But it's a trap.

Because "I'm just a guy" means:

  • Nobody else can reach parity with you
  • Nobody else gets credit for helping
  • When you leave, the knowledge dies
  • When you burn out, there's no replacement

"I'm just a guy" keeps expertise locked in one head instead of letting it reproduce.

And here's who that hurts most:

People come to Noisebridge because they can't afford credentials elsewhere.
They can't afford MIT.
They can't afford bootcamps.
They can't afford certification programs.

They come here. They do the work.
They learn welding. They master CNC. They become experts at 3D printing.

And it already works — people have built careers here. We know this.

But we're leaving so much on the table.

Because when we refuse to document who knows what — when we refuse to keep a ledger of achievement — we are gatekeeping by omission.

When someone puts in 200 hours mastering a skill and we don't write it down anywhere, we've erased their achievement.
When someone interviews for a job and can't point to anything concrete from Noisebridge, we've denied them the exact thing they came here to get.

"Guildmaster of the CNC Guild at Noisebridge" is real, transferable value — but only if we actually recognize it. Only if we actually write it down.

Now here's where people object:
"But that's hierarchy! That's not anarchist!"

Wrong.

Anarchism means without archons — without entrenched, permanent authorities.
Not without structure.
Not without roles.
Not without recognition.

Jo Freeman wrote "The Tyranny of Structurelessness," and people love to post it like a gotcha against anarchist organizing.

But Freeman wasn't arguing against anarchism.
She was arguing against spaces that claim to have no structure while actually running on invisible, unaccountable power networks.

The solution isn't less structure.
It's intentional, visible, accountable structure.

What credit actually does is simple. Credit answers three questions without a manager, a committee, or a gatekeeper:

  • Who can teach this?
  • Who can vouch for this?
  • Who is responsible for this continuing to exist?

That's not authority — that's coordination.

Credit is how we coordinate trust at scale without central authority.

Without credit, we still answer those questions — just informally and unfairly.
Through reputation. Through whispers. Through "ask around."

That's not anarchism.
That's an invisible hierarchy with no appeal process.

Credit makes those answers public, contestable, and transferable.

At Noisebridge, that means:

  • Recognizing expertise publicly
  • Creating paths for others to reach that expertise
  • Documenting knowledge before people leave
  • Making mastery reproducible

Creating more masters is anarchist infrastructure work.

Credit is not hierarchy.
Credit is infrastructure.

It's the scaffolding that lets the next person climb.
It's the map that shows newcomers where to start.

When we refuse to give credit, we're not being humble.
We're withholding real value from people who cannot afford to buy it elsewhere.

And that's not anarchist.
That's just wasteful.

4. Three Guilds as Proof-of-Concept[edit | edit source]

Let me show you what this looks like in practice — three examples, already on the wiki. Go read them; they're actually entertaining.

The Taxidermy Guild
Founded because someone donated a dead raccoon.
Weekly meetings on Wednesdays.
Clear advancement criteria.
Meeting notes going back to 2024.
A gallery of completed work with names attached.
Bus number: at least 4.

The Rubber Ducky Guild
For rubber ducks and those who aspire to duck-nature.
Weekly meetings on Sundays. Monthly Silent Sitting.
Focused on presence and meaning rather than tools — but the same bones: regular gathering, documentation, and paths for participation.

The Yak Shaving Guild
The cautionary tale.
A scoreboard of who got stuck deepest in prerequisite chains.
No meeting time. No teaching mechanism. No memory.

It's funny. It's relatable. And it's dead on arrival.

Because a scoreboard without a watering hole isn't a guild.
It's just a wiki page.

Here's what actually matters — not one rigid structure, but the same ingredients:

  • A regular meeting (the watering hole)
  • Notes that survive the meeting
  • Clear, appropriate paths for participation and advancement
  • Credit given publicly

Taxidermy expresses this one way.
Rubber Ducky expresses it another.
Yak Shaving doesn't express it at all.

And that's the difference between a living guild and a joke that can't teach anyone.

5. The Challenge[edit | edit source]

A guild succeeds when it creates more Masters.

Not when it runs smoothly.
Not when one hero holds everything together.

When other people reach parity — now and in time.

Here's my challenge to Noisebridge:

If your expertise cannot reproduce itself — even unintentionally — you're not building, you're hoarding.
If your guild cannot survive you, it is not a guild yet.
If knowledge doesn't transfer, it dies without dignity and takes both your future and Noisebridge's future with it.

The James Joyce Society figured this out in 1947.
The Taxidermy Guild figured it out because someone donated a dead raccoon.
The Rubber Ducky Guild figured it out in service to silent witness.

We can do the same.

Let's create more masters.
Let's make Noisebridge more effective and more anarchist.
Let's build guilds that last because they deliberately, intentionally, joyfully create more people who rock.
